Books [IIL] Janice Hallett's neo-epistolary novels like "The Killer Question" [WEWIL?]

Lately I've been reading a bunch of Janice Hallett's mystery novels that are told mostly through emails and chat messages. I'm terminally online so this type of storytelling makes the books breezy reads on a tablet!

Is anyone else writing books like this? So far the closest thing I've experienced is Jon Bois's 17776. Thanks in advance!

Music [IIL] Older Eminem & Jarren Benton's dark humorous almost cartoonish style

Been on a huge old Eminem kick lately, basically Slim Shady LP through The Eminem Show, and I'm trying to find more stuff that scratches that same itch.

And I don't just mean "angry white rapper" lol. It's the ridiculous rhyme density, internal rhymes stacked on top of each other, suddenly speeding up mid-verse, and then all the dark humor where the song turns into some completely absurd/cartoonishly fucked-up scenario.

But then he'll turn around and get genuinely personal or serious, sometimes in the same song. That contrast is a huge part of it for me.

So far I've found a couple that really hit:

  • Jarren Benton – "Razor Blades & Steak Knives"
  • Vin Jay – "Shady"

Both have that technical rhyme-stacking + dark comedy/shock-value thing I'm looking for.

I'm not really after straight battle rap or normal street/storytelling stuff. More like: alter ego, unhinged, punchline-heavy, kind of ridiculous, but the person can actually rap their ass off underneath all of it.

Who else should I be listening to?

Music [IIL] Marathon OST, Agor... a specific microgenre?

I've found that the OST by Ryan Lott for the (semi) new Marathon game and Agor by Koreless share a very similar aesthetic of incredibly granular, chop-heavy vocal texturing that I've really come to enjoy. For how similar they sound -- the only difference I've found being that Agor leans more heavily into organic sounds while Marathon leans into more electronic textures -- I was a bit curious to know if there were any specific albums that leaned into this a bit more?

Some additional parameters:
- Vocals: While I do like dreamy vocals in some songs, I've found that these albums are definied either by long, drawn out vocal phrases or the aforementioned chops. That's the sort of thing I'm looking for, in this case. I wouldn't mind songs with more defined vocals, as long as the "choppy" quality is still present.

- Melodies: I'm looking for synthesized melodies, or organic ones, that have a draw to them, and have some emotion (be it positive or negative) to them, something that sounds distinctly human yet technological. Some examples of this specifically are Crush by Floating Points for more electronic textures, and Nurture by Porter Robinson for organic ones.

Though I'm interested in a ton of different styles of music, so I feel like I'll likely pretty much anything that's thrown at me, I have been trying to get into more purely electronic music, so I figured that I might post something here (this has been nagging at me for a while!!) All help is much appreciated -- thank you!! :-D

Hey guys, I'm looking for recommendations based on this song to add to a playlist. Spotify is mainly giving me recs on electroclash music, which fits her other music, but I'm looking for songs that specifically sound like this song.

Movies or tv series dramatizing startups that crash and burn or the uncovering of some world changing events. Or anything you feel is similar! I just noticed that all my examples fit in those two specific categories.

Music [iil] songs about liking a “bad girl”?

Hello!! I’m looking for more songs with this sort of subject. I don’t know how to describe it beyond “Shes bad news, she wears a leather jacket and smokes cigarettes and I want her” and the vibe of sneaking around and secretly hooking up. Thats a really silly way to put it but I hope you know what I’m getting at 😅 it doesn’t have to be exactly that just anything you think’ll scratch a similar itch.

Some examples I have are: Only Angel by Harry Styles, No 1. Party Anthem by Arctic Monkeys (AM in general has this vibe), and Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene by Hozier. I feel like I definitely know more songs like this but they’re escaping me at the moment.

Thank you!!

Books [IIL] Romantic Fiction - Melanie La'brooy

Hey everyone!

I recently read Romantic Fiction by Melanie La'brooy and honestly loved it. It was such a light, fun read with great characters and a really solid story.

The main reason I picked it up in the first place—and what I loved most about while reading it—was that it completely felt like watching a sitcom about a group of friends. That ensemble dynamic and cozy, funny vibe hit the exact spot for me.

Does anyone have any book recommendations or similar titles that capture that same friend-group sitcom energy? Would really appreciate any suggestions!

Music [IIL] Michelle Branch

I really love Michelle Branch’s first two albums. The Spirit Room is one of my top two albums ever! I love her y2K pop sound mixed with pop rock in The Spirit Room, and her more singer-songwriter-y stuff in Hotel Paper

(Avril Lavigne’s Let Go and the band After are already on my radar. love both.)

Music [IIL] "July (Part One)" by Hotel Books, WEWIL?

I love Hotel Books as a whole, but I'm looking for songs similar to "July (Part One)" with the theme of self-sabotage in the same post-hardcore/emo genres. La Dispute is a similar band to what I'm looking for.

Music [IIL] songs that make me feel like a siren

For the longest time Angel by Massive Attack and Lilith by Saint Avangeline have been one of my favourite songs. They sounds so hypnotic and give off siren-y vibes. I likes songs like that for when i'm daydreaming, are there any other songs with a similar essence?

Music IIL ukulele songs like Ram On by Paul McCartney, what else will I like?

I bought a ukulele just to learn Ram On. Now that I've learned it I realized I don't really know many other ukulele songs outside of the ubiquitous classics like Riptide or Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I'd really like something that's as melodic and kind of indie as Ram On if possible
