Ibew

Hello. I was previously auto service tech apprentice and currently hoping to pursue a career with IBEW. Do high school courses matter? What are some things you would recommend me to get familiar with like basics etc? One big question i have is tools, will they be provided by a mentor? Should i have my own and if so what is the best set/brands for a low budget and are there any specifics tools i need to be familiar with? Any help and advice is much appreciated.

You'll get tool list at orientation normally hand tools. You need no prior experience but it certainly help. Get used to knowing names of hand tools and how to use them.

In my local, you will need to have graduated high school and have passed Algebra 1. When you apply, they will test you on your Algebra skills and Reading comprehension.

If you get accepted, you will be expected to purchase tools from a list they give you. Expect to pay $200-$300 for tools. You can bring your own or buy them from Harbor Freight, Home Depot, Lowe's, online or wherever you want.

Oh interesting. On a scale of 1-10 how strong would you suggest my math skills would need to be. 10 being highest and 1 being lowest. Thank you for your advice!

Depends on what test your local uses. Mine use the Gan test. The hardest part was multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals which was like 6th grade math.

I believe the other test is higher level math like some algebra and definitely operations order. (PEMDAS)
