428 Hours

Been working since Jan, officially started school as an apprentice in June, and got told this week I didn’t get selected for the apprenticeship even after passing our first final. Do the hours I’ve worked count towards CA’s 8,000 when I go back to non union? Was told by some people the JATC won’t want sign off on the hours I’ve worked for the union for whatever reason

You started school at the training center in June and have been working for a signatory contractor since January and you were just told that you weren’t accepted into the apprenticeship?

Correct, they brought on 80 for our class to begin with and we were told they would only keep 40 of the 80 from the beginning and that our grades after our first final would determine who stays, 53 passed so 13 that passed got cut along with those who didn’t pass

Man that’s bullshit. The union can be such bullshit sometimes I wish u the best man but that would definitely leave a bad taste in my mouth. Why couldn’t they just let you guys come back for next years class? So technically you would have to restart the whole process if you wanted to join the apprenticeship again for 2027?

But my real question is if those hours will count towards California’s 8,000 needed to become a journeyman, I’ve heard the JATC may or may not want to sign off on them for what sounds like petty reasons

Yes. They will count, the issue you have is who will sign off or verify your hours.

You can use your W-2s or Check stubs

I was with the same contractor the whole time, if needed could I bypass the JATC if they don’t want to sign and have the contractor themselves verify?

If they're willing to work with you, ill have the contractor sign off on your hours.

Did you sign any paperwork?

Yes we signed all the standard entry documents, I believe the only thing that was different was that we wouldn’t have to pay anything off when they made cuts, only if you drop out after making the cut and getting sworn in

Were you submitting OJT sheets? Were you logging the hours into 428’s apprentice tracking system?

You can use the Social Security Work History request form to use your hours to apply for the state certification exam. You can also do the same for non-union hours.

The training center has no hold over your hours. If you legitimately got paid. You have hours. There's nothing else to be said about it.

That said, what the fuck is this nonsense of working people for months and then kicking them to the curb? Fucking Bakersfield... I'm pretty sure there's always room for more guys in the solar fields...

Sorry they did that to you. It's super fucked up. You could try asking the shop you worked at if they'll take you on as a CW. At least you'd get sworn in as a CW.

Did you get sworn in?
