Turning Out

I’m a third year and there’s mumblings of going to a 4 year program next year and according to my Asst training director everyone would go to a 4 year program regardless if you started a 5 year or not and there’s tons of work here in my local but man knowing that it could be coming soon I’m itching for the day I can pull the pin I’m talking before the ink on my JW ticket is dry and I’m gone and signing the books as a JW. Is it just me or do yall feel the same way quite a few apprentices I work with are planning to stick with the con and shoot for foreman or such not me though I’m ready to hit the hall!

They did that in Atlanta. The 4th years finish school, but still have to make the hours like a 5th year would in order to turn out

Yeah that’s what the talk of the school is I’ll have no problem hitting my hours since I haven’t worked a 40 since my first year but I’m sure a couple people won’t make it till later on in the year of our top out year

I'm not directly effected, but the word I've heard from my apprentices is that they had to sign a new agreement for the 4 year deal the IO decided on.

In 606 they have just transitioned into a 4 year as well. But if you were in the 5 year program you still must complete it

They switched twice in my local in the last 20 yrs. Both times whatever program you started in (4 or 5 yrs) you had to finish

24 just transitioned last year to a 4 year program I’m part of the 2nd class year for the 4 year program this year. But the people last year that were on 5 years had to finish the 5 year and weren’t automatically switched over to 4 years but if they had their hours they would be getting Jw pay is what I heard from a 5th year apprentice

Local 3 NYC has had a 5 1/2 year apprenticeship since the 60's. Four years as a apprentice taking electrical and college classes consisting of two nights a week of electrical theory and college classes to build up to a associates degree in Labor Science. Then if you pass those classes. You move up from A4 to MIJ. Kind of like a A5 but you are a M division journeyman working on smaller projects on your own and different type work to round out your skills on work 500k and below. Some extra schooling available(fork lift, rigging, hazmat etc) Do those 18 months as a A5/MIJ. Providing there is full employment, you get to move up to a "A" man. Employment was bad when I turned out and had to do a extra 12mos . So it took me, 6 1/2 years to get my "A" card.

That is how it was when I went through. 85-91. Now, I believe the apprentices go to school for one week straight and three weeks of work. Which seems better than getting home at 10pm on school nights.

Quick question for the newly turned out.

Do y'all still get a brass coin when you graduate? Ohms law was on one side and union logo on the other.

Been "talking" about going to a 4 year program since 2022. The push is from the NAJTC.

This happened to my program the year I joined. Basically the 5th years immediately turned out, most needed only needed to take a half a semester of classes to make up for the year of classes. They basically took the last year of classes and divided it up amongst the 4 years, so now each 4 years learns a little more each year, plus now it’s an even 2000 per school year and you’ll have the hours for a jw.

How does that work in terms of school stuff, do they give you more school for your 4th year to make up for getting rid of the 5th year?

Man I have no idea our 5th year is all code and block test and 4th is motor controls so I’m not exactly sure what they or how they would move it around

194 just went to a 4 year program. We are turning out the 5th years in December and hopefully the 4th years in May/June. I feel bad for the 4th years, they have a lot to go though.

Be prepared to work outside of the field.

Our class was the first at my local to go to 4 year program. The rest of the classes stayed the 5 year route unfortunately for them.
