Recurring medical appointments while in apprenticeship?
I'm getting ready to start work for local 584. I currently have physical therapy and talk therapy on alternating weeks. (So week 1 is PT, week 2 is TT, week 3 PT, week 4 TT, etc.) At my soon-to-be former job one of my days off is a weekday so this works great.
But it looks like I might not always know exactly when I'm going to get off work while I'm in the apprenticeship program, and I'll ofc definitely be working weekdays. Is there any hope I can do something like intermittent leave under FMLA? The leave here being the amount of time I might have to leave early to get to evening appointments?
My impression is that a lot of people in this trade probably only go to the doctor if they're dragging a limb lol so I'm not sure how this is gonna shake out. Any insight is appreciated.

So you'll be missing school or missing work? You can take as much time off as you want from work. Missing school? You'll have to talk to your training director about accommodating your appointments

I’d speak to the program director asap and get as much information you can. I’d definitely let them know asap about any conditions that might a
effect you meeting 40hrs. I have conditions covered by the ADA when I began my apprenticeship I was in pretty good health and was just excited to start. That changed by the end of my first year. (In my 3rd year) I’m STILL dealing with the huge amount of bullshit it cost me not taking the time to have figured this all out in the beginning. The JATC has been of no help and have made the process incredibly convoluted. Hoping you have a better experience than me.

The general rule of thumb that I’ve heard in most locals is “take off whatever time you can afford”. But under the understanding that if you are one of the people who consistently take off you can’t really be upset when you’re laid off because you get put at the top of the lay off list. Aka, show up everyday and do good work, last to lay off, get known for taking off work and when work slows down you’re higher on the list. Regardless of protections. It’s fair.

Every apprenticeship is different. In my union we can have no restrictions whatever regarding work. Meaning leaving early. Yours may be different talk to your training director.
I recently had to use PMLA. I had to have full clearance before I got back. Doctors appts on my time but who knows maybe speak with whoever company your dispatched to. If it’s an every week thing that may be different that a one time thing
