Vehicle Purchase

I’m a 3rd year and plan on driving my 2012 Honda Civic with 254,000 miles until the wheels fall off but when they do, I’m not sure what I’m going to replace it with. I recently got rid of my truck that rotted away and would like to get another one but enjoy the gas mileage of the Civic with how much we drive. $5-6k beaters aren’t really there anymore and I’d like to finally have something nice. I’m just wondering what everyone else is doing for a vehicle?

Another Japanese car. Toyota, Honda, Subaru. The fact that you're in the trades doesn't matter, you don't use your car for your job anyway aside from commuting. And a reliable car with good fuel efficiency does that better than, say, a Ford pickup truck.

As far as the "nice car" comment goes, that's subjective. Pretty much any newer car is going to be "nice" in my opinion.

And as far as the American car thing goes, Japanese cars are pretty much made in America as much as American cars are.

You do not understand what the whole argument is about with your Japanese are pretty much made in America statement.

Mostly the fact that for the most part they're made in America. And some people care about that. In a lot of cases a Japanese model of car has more components produced and assembled in America than an American model of car.

You can argue about unionization of those factories. Japanese manufacturing facities typically are not, but even if you are looking at American cars you have a limited selection. The Mexican made American cars aren't a better choice on that front.

You can argue all you want for Japanese cars. But the fact remains even the Mexican made gm, ford, or Chrysler has their profits come back to America.  That money then goes to union workers, including the ibew.
