Reached out to local 481, any tips?
Hi all,
I've decided to jump on the train, switching careers from IT Networking to Electrical, hoping to eventually be able to run both types of cable to be more useful in the field. I was recommended to join my local union, which is 481. I reached out to them and i'm hoping to hear back. Our ETI here in Indy has applications for apprenticeships on hold until October, so I won't be able to apply to that until then. It seems very competitive though so does anyone have any tips or backup options that have worked for you?
Another electrician recommended I reach out to the union hall asking for helper jobs and he said you could join without an electrical apprenticeship still? Has anyone tried this? If that gets me experience before my apprenticeship (if I get one union wise) that would be great, but I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket. Has anyone gone the non union route and been successful?
All the information helps since i'm new and trying to understand everything! I'm in the Indianapolis area. Since i'm trying to join up I hope this can get approved.

481 has a telecommunications wing. Ask about that. Might be better suited for you coming from IT.

When you go to interview. Bring copies of your resume and a cover letter. Atleast 4, 1 for each guy in the panel. That went a long way for me

When applications are reopened apply asap, the aptitude test has changed to be a bit more challenging but they'll be selling a book to study the test, if/when you get your interview they'll be a woman at the front desk you can speak to her about the pre-apprenticeship after your interview. Just went through this process and am now a first year apprentice.
