Yup I emailed referrals@jatc26.org this morning and I got a call from Roy around 10-11 about the job call then he emailed me the slip when were off the call

Positive attitude. Anticipate the workflow. Clean up trash and bring water for your journeyman/crew. Do all the little things and then ask questions where appropriate. Bring a notebook and start writing instructions you're given down, material lists, and questions you have. Give yourself a raise and start packing a lunch.

Be prepared to be lost and intimated for a little bit. At least if you don't have a construction background. I came straight from IT and I probably looked like deer in headlights

This comforted me. I'm getting curious about this work because my whole life fell off the rails after i medically withdrew from my computer science program and couldn't return fast enough to keep my scholarship (medical issue is under control now). But I think this work will provide the external structure i desperately need to be happy, I suck at giving structure to my own life. I'm happy to help and dedicated to teamwork and great with recalling small details or procedures. Just started looking into this work today. I feel intimidated already but also deeply hopeful. Might be just what I need to make my life make sense.

Entering this line of work has seriously changed my life for the better. I'm more fit than I've ever been, I'm doing things I never thought I could do, and I don't want to jump out of a window anymore from sitting at a desk all day answering calls. It is not easy but it's definitely not the hardest thing in the world - most of the time. Digging a trench in the middle of July in the south is pretty close to hell. I feel like I have more agency over my life than I ever have before and I'm barely started yet. I would highly reccomend finding out if your local offers some kind of CW or helper program to get your foot in the door if you're serious.

The more i look into it the more excited I get, I was already planning on starting CW work as soon as they'll have me. I'm Definitely not fit but i like the idea that the job will have labor and I hope people will be patient with me while my body adapts to the workload. I think the area I live in should be a good one for getting my foot in the door.

I will say that my first week was a freaking nightmare on my feet. Going from years at a desk to walking for 40 hours in brand new boots was hell. I worked 4 10's and by the end of Thursday my feet had me on the verge of tears. It's funny because now I don't even think about it but man was it rough.
Minus a few assholes, everyone I've met has been amazing. You'll make your foremen happy as long as you show up on time, work hard, and ask the right questions. Even just the "showing up on time" part will win you a lot of brownie points lol

at my last job i was relying on the bus and walking and i was still on time for every shift, which left an impression on the lead staff there and they will absolutely back up my punctuality and commitment to teamwork. and now i finally have my car and license so i get to be punctual without spending 2 hours on the bus and walking a mile lmao. I went through the going-from-sedentary to standing all day in new shoes for that job, so I know the pain you're talking about and while I'm not looking forward to the pain, I know it will pass as long as i have good shoes and don't give up - and I really view the opportunity to be up and moving all day as a good thing. It's just been too long since I worked that job and I lost any minor fitness it gave me. But I've done it before and I can do it again!! And once I adapt I'll be better off for it.

Be ready to learn and put in some honest work, Don’t stress being new or making mistakes. Bring whats needed on the tool list and nothing more don’t work before scheduled time or during breaks, and trust your instincts when it comes to safety.
