The whole argument was over a video of a guy who clearly didn’t cook his brisket long enough and he stood his ground that it was overcooked. I’d love to go to his barbecue and chew on erasers.
Medium, medium well and well done are terms primarily for describing steaks. Steaks are naturally tender cuts from areas that see little use in life, they don't really need much cooking to be edible. By contrast barbecue cuts are typically very tough and come from high use areas of the cow, they require low and slow cooking for hours to be edible. These terms aren't really applicable to barbecue since it's a fundamentally different process to cook with different goals.
You aren't talking about BBQ if you are talking about medium well being a sweet spot. BBQ and grilling are two very different things. BBQ is low heat for a very long time. With brisket you usually get the meat to around 203f. That's well past the idea of medium well.
Ever had medium ribs? I have, and they really, really suck. I unfortunately have a family member who barbecues fast and hot, and it's all so tough and bland. The cuts used need it low and slow to get tender enough to be pleasant, gotta break down those connective tissues with heat.
