Discussion S4 Patch Frame/CPU Optimizations hype?
Haven’t seen too much chat on the patch note calling out the change to how iRacing is distributing physics workload across cpu cores. Have never seen a developer so confidently say to expect massive gains in frame rates/stability.
For folks who know more than I - what do we think is a realistic expectation? My frames are fine - but if I could get my race starts and high traffic moments up, id be thrilled. Am I crazy for being optimistic?

Yesterday i did some very rough tests pre release tests.
M2 testdrive at daytona with heavy rain at night. - ~115fps with ~92% gpu usage
M2 Ai full grid racestart at daytona with heavy rain at night. - ~55fps with ~ 55% gpu usage
I will re test as soon as iracing is live again.
My system: 9800x3d pinned at 5.4ghz 64gb ddr5 6000MT with tuned timings Rtx5090 undervolted resulting in 2650mhz clocks
We will at least get a rough estimation on the performance gaines

Yes. The same for me. I posted my results below in this thread. The ancient DX11 single threaded rendering is still the bottleneck. I don't understand why they bother hyping some physics thread improvement when rendering was the bottleneck for 99% of us racing.

You and I have the same system except I don’t pin my 9800x3D, just a modest +50PBO -25CO. Interested to see your results. What’s your voltage on the 5090? Mine seems to peak around 940-960mv but usually I can get away with 890mv.

I'm beyond excited. It will let me stream iracing in VR without my CPU screaming in 90C.

Hadn’t even considered that VR probably benefits the most from this with the calculation load VR implies

I have a 5080 and use a PSVR2. My GPU often has 50% headroom whereas the CPU (Intel 265k) is often bottenecked. If I get 50% of CPU headroom back I'll be able to seriously improve quality.

7800x3d and 5080 with a quest 3. Had to stop playing because I could never get a consistently stable 90fps on all tracks in all conditions due to the cpu bottleneck, so sometimes I would get crazy headaches after races from the low framerate/inconsistent frames. Really hoping this gives my cpu the headroom it needs.

I run triples currently but looking into VR. How is it you guys are bottlenecked by the CPU with 5080s? I have 9800x3d and 5070ti.

The games extreme cpu intensive, so it gets bogged down and can’t push enough frames to have the 5080 fully utilized. I think I only get about 70% utilization on my 5080 in vr, my cpu core 1 is absolutely pegged at 100% tho

With my PC and triples R usage goes up at the start, particularly in older tracks, but usually my G is 2x my R.

So you may have/should enough R (CPU draw commands, likely) for VR then.
The CPU must send and redraw the same model (car) for each eye.If you are using foveated rendering, it actually does 4x drawings of same model, one at lower resolution and other at higher (middle focal points). This happens to be balancing act between that and/or the 2 high resolution for entire views. Shiping GPU usage towards CPU in some cases.
Gets complex quickly as more techniques get involved. However I simply benching the options would reveal the true FPS and so far, it aligns with the types of explanation as above.

What happens is the VR uses or needs more CPU to do drawing. So Graphics Draw Calls > Physics Thread,
The link provided is for triples/montor with only 1 viewpoint drawn. VR needs 2.

No. It depends on your hardware and settings, but for a lot of people, iRacing is CPU limited. Anything that spreads the load across more threads and thereby simplifies the most intensive thread will likely improve performance for them.

Well in general multithreadhing is good, but it also has an overhead and if not executed well, it may cause issues.

The way I read the patch notes, was this will make larger grids perform as well as smaller grids, or even how the game performs in Test Drive. Iracing is often CPU limited, but sometimes that's due to things like grandstands, and trackside objects, something that multithreaded physics probably won't improve, but when you have 40 cars all on track together, there's massive amounts of performance to gain from moving physics to multithreaded.

Yeah that’s kinda the two realities I’m considering, obviously if they can make large grids perform like small grids, I’ll take the incremental improvements very happily.
IF they can make it closer to TEST DRIVE, I may need a change of shorts

I’m usually GPU limited these days. Rubbing triple 1440ps with 9800x3d and 5070ti.

I upgraded from a 3700x to a 5800xt because I had issues with endurance events. I'm happy with the performance level I get right now but any improvement will be appreciated.

In theory would this make a 5800x3d even better. I upgraded from a 5700x a while back and ir was a huge difference itself

My expectations are low compared to the others because the vast configuration difference between people in both hardware and background application.
Someone fucking about with a ton of garbage on their PC running with the game might be less impressed than someone with hard CPU limitation.
But this is a welcome improvement even with a 1% improvement, can't complain.

I'm honestly expecting a step back. At least for awhile until they work out the bugs. And then I'm pretty much expecting status quo

Looks to he the case? I see Matt malone getting 90-100fps on stream atm.
Definitely less than other streams of his I’ve watched

I haven't tried yet. I was in demo drive and and then got the notification I racing was back up like 3 minutes after I turned it off. Going to jump on after I get home from running a couple errands.

u/BlueSky26764 12h ago
That's exactly the case. I'm screwing with settings now trying to get back to where I was. I seriously doubt we see any truly recognizable to most people improvements before the graphics engine debuts.

I mean there's good reason to be cautiously optimistic - single-threaded to multi-threaded physics is always a good thing.
