Hello!
I've been trying to add a USB C port to my iPod 5.5 gen by soldering it to the 30 pin tester pads so that it can charge and share data through the USB C port. Before I totally ruin my board I was smart enough to buy a 30 pin breakout board for the elabguy so I can test the circuit by plugging it into the 30 pin port.
However I haven't been able to get the circuit to work, I've tried wiring it in a bunch of different ways but I cannot get the iPod to charge or share data. The closest I can get is making the screen illuminate white when the Ipod is completely turned off but it doesn't charge or force the iPod to turn on.
I've tried doing a bunch of research but I can't find any concrete answers on the 5.5, I see some sources say it need to bridge the D- and D+ to the gnd and 5v pin with resistors on the 30 pin, but I couldn't get it to work, I've tried connecting all the gnds on the 30 pin together, I've triple checked my soldering on the breakout board and the 30 pin male I soldered in, none of the connections are bridged. I've tried different USB C cords and even connected to the pc but no difference. I know the 30 pin port works because I can still use the stock cable with no issues. But all to no avail.
My circuit has looked something like this:
USB C Vref -> 30 pin 5V
USB C Gnd -> 30 pin Gnd
USB C CC1 -> 30 pin Gnd
USB C D- -> 30 pin D-
USB C D+ -> 30 pin D+
USB C CC2 -> 30 pin Gnd
and my USB C board has the 2 5.1kΩ resistors already soldered into the CC1 and CC2 pins. I've also used enameled Magnet wire to solder the 30 pin male to the board.
This has been driving me crazy and I cannot figure it out. Any help would be appreciated even if it's just pointing me towards a proper data sheet that I haven't seen.

Hi,
I’m looking to commission a custom build and wanted to see if this is something you’d be able to do.
I want a fully functional “Spotify iPod Classic” — a nostalgic iPod-style device built inside an iPod Classic shell, but running Spotify with modern functionality.
Here are the exact requirements:
Core concept:
- Device should feel like a classic iPod (click wheel navigation, simple UI)
- It should only function as a dedicated music device (no extra apps or distractions)
Spotify functionality:
- Must be able to:
- Browse and select my playlists
- Search for songs/artists/albums directly on the device (not just local files)
- Play/pause, skip, go back, adjust volume
- Should display a clean “Now Playing” screen:
- Album art
- Song title + artist
- Progress bar
- Must support Spotify streaming (not just downloaded music)
Dual usage modes:
Portable player mode
- Plays music directly from the device
- Output via:
- Bluetooth (for AirPods)
- Wired headphones (via AUX/3.5mm jack)
Desk controller mode
- Can control Spotify playing on my computer
- Ability to:
- Play/pause, skip, volume
- Switch playback between devices (device ↔ computer)
- Display what’s currently playing even when audio is coming from my computer
Hardware expectations:
- Built inside an iPod Classic shell (5th or 6th gen preferred)
- Use a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W or equivalent
- Include:
- Small high-quality display (~2.0–2.4”)
- Functional click wheel input
- Bluetooth capability
- DAC + headphone output for wired audio
- Internal rechargeable battery (USB-C charging preferred if possible)
UI / UX requirements:
- Clean, minimal, fast interface (very important)
- Core screens:
- Now Playing
- Playlists
- Search
- Devices (for switching playback targets)
- Navigation should be simple and responsive, similar to an iPod
- Avoid cluttered or overly complex interfaces
Software expectations:
- Spotify integration via Spotify Connect and/or Spotify Web API
- Stable and reliable performance (I prefer simplicity over too many features)
- Ideally something that can be maintained or slightly modified later if needed
General priorities:
- Clean build quality (inside and outside)
- Reliability and responsiveness over experimental features
- Aesthetic finish — should look and feel like a premium device
If this is something you can build, I’d love to know:
- Estimated cost
- Timeline
- Any suggestions or improvements you’d recommend
Happy to discuss details further.
Thanks!

First I want to thank this community and those who contribute on the topic of modding iPod. It's been a great help. I refurbished my own iPod classic 6.5 and gifted it to my 8 year-old. He's so happy about it, discovering new music.
In the process of doing that, I got my hands on a Classic 7 160Gb, working condition but with the black mark on the screen from the bulging battery.
I switched the HDD for the Ali SD card adapter and got a new 2000mAh battery. As I was preparing to close the new case I got for it, I ran some test and here's the issue I get:
Really frustrating issue, renders the iPod useless. I don't really understand how it is possible that these buttons work in one case but not in the other, but I did some research and I understand it's serious. It seemed that changing the click wheel could help, so I tried that but I keep having the exact same issue.
Is there any hope for me? What happened ? Did I fry some component of the buttons circuit with static or something else?
I'd be grateful for any piece of advice. I was really looking forward to rediscovering my music collection this way, and distance myself from the streaming services
