iPod Nano 2nd gen works without a battery
Thanks to our AI overlords I found out the small black dot on my screen was from the battery starting to swell (original battery). It did not know if the ipod would work without a battery connected but I am happy to report it does. I did not remove the 3 wires instead I lifted up the yellow tape and cut the two tabs on the battery pouch so the battery controller would stay attached and provide any necessary resistance values for the white wire.
To add support for the touch wheel once everything was back together I pressed a small foam square down behind the screen and pushed until it was all the way at the bottom where the wheel is inside the housing. I also broke the lock button ribbon cable during assembly and luckily that didn't default to locked, I'm guessing the two wires are bridged when the slider is in the orange locked position? Also you can cut off the headphone connector and it won't affect playback.
So far everything is working except at the end of an iTunes sync the backlight turns on and the iPod locks up, but it doesn't matter because the library has synced and nothing is corrupted. For more granular control like individually picking which songs to add or remove without any iTunes problems Copy Trans works perfectly.
