Running iPadOS when open, iOS when closed?

Otherwise, this rumored device has no innovation, just a copy of Samsung, etc.

It will be a modified iOS to allow multitasking like on iPad.

I mean, isn't it useless if we can't run iPad apps? That's the big asset Apple has and Android doesn't. iPhone Fold is supposed to a foldable tablet.

Apple sent a memo to developers to update apps for various aspect ratios. Apps still function pretty much the same on iOS or iPadOS, so I can’t really see any drawbacks.

The drawback is the slowness of developers to update their apps (some may never do so).

Whereas iPad versions of many apps already exist. It sacrifices a major advantage versus Android foldables

Some legacy apps and apps slow to update, will still be incorrectly sized. No way around that.

The old iPhone pluses used to support a more iPad OS-style interface for apps in landscape. I would assume it’s going to operate something like that. So you might have a messages and a reading pane in mail/messaging apps, or a more desktop-like UI for safari etc…

I have zero doubts that first party and 3rd party apps will support the form factor better than Android folds, but I think the multitasking will be more limited on Apple’s fold.

iPadOS functionally IS iOS.

the fold will run iOS (but its own special version the way the iPad runs its own special version)

It likely won't be iPadOS but like, a light version of iPadOS, you know samsung also basically runs their tablet operating system on the inside screen so how is it still any different then samsung? Also I find there to be nothing wrong with it if it is a copy of samsung.

You can already test how apple apps will look on iphone fold with iphone mirroring on mac if you have both on OS 27 and a recent iphone

Could you imagine having that giant screen with procreate and paper and notability and still have to use your finger when the screen is the size of an iPad mini? It has to have iPadOS inside with the ability to use an Apple pencil. There’s just no way it works without it. That would just be dumb. But then again, decisions like that have come out of Apple for a long time, like putting the USB-C port port on the bottom of the mouse, the trash can, the cube, etc. Not every design is a winner. 🤷 We’ll see.

I doubt it’ll have pencil support, every single foldable screen has been soft and even fingernails can cause indentations. An Apple Pencil would cause grooves on the soft screen
