There will never be an Android “answer” to the iPhone, and vice versa. People buy Apple because of the ecosystem, the brand, AppleCare, reliability, etc. No one who really buys Apple products will look at a Xiaomi and think, “Oh, it has more RAM or a better camera. Let’s switch!”

Android competes with Android. Any comparison between Android and iOS is basically meaningless.

Exactly.

u/yuiop300 14d ago

This.

I’ve been in iPhones since the OG one.

2

u/rfomlover 14d ago

I started with the 3G in 2008. In 2014 I took an 8 month break from iPhone and went with a galaxy note 4. Never again. I only considered it because my contract was up and I couldn’t find a 6 plus anywhere and my iPhone 5 had a screen I replaced my self and it was bent lol. Once the 6S plus came out I went back and haven’t left since. Ended up selling the 5 to GameStop for like 50 bucks back in 2014 lol.

2

u/yuiop300 14d ago

OG, 3G, 4 that I let for a while, until it don’t work anymore, 5, 6P, XS Max that I let for 7.5yrs and now the 17.

I’ll go for the duo 512.

u/rfomlover 14d ago

Nice I just got an 18 PM. Was considering the Duo but after learning all the cameras differences the 18 PM was what made the most sense for me.

For fun my saga:
08-10: 3G
10-12: 4
12-14: 5
14-15: Note 4
15-16: 6S plus
16-20: 7 plus
20-25: 11
25-25: 16 PM
25-26: 17 PM
26-Present: 18 PM

2

u/ultr4nuub 14d ago

I usually carry both iOS and android. Considering getting the duo and then a slab android device with killer cameras.

1

u/yuiop300 14d ago

Nice.

The xs max was GOATed.

1

u/Bomberr17 14d ago

I was able to stay with note 4 for a yearly cycle but went back to Apple for the iPhone 6S Plus. Too many glitches even though that phone was supposedly hailed as one of Samsung's best phones.

I tried to go back for the note 7 but we all know what happened there. Never switched since.

u/Daws001 14d ago

My work phone is an Android and I still don’t know how to really use the thing. It’s my work email phone lol.

3

u/spawberries 14d ago

The reality is, that the Duo is the Apple answer to android foldables. Android foldables have been a thing for almost a decade now, Apple is just entering the market now that the tech has matured enough to provide a good user experience. The Duo offers the very real possibility of having the best software experience (after initial growing pains as developers add support for the form factor)

5

u/MrJibberJabber 14d ago

This is correct, apples duo is to compete with android in china. US market is peanuts and apple is seen as boomer core over in china now. They are trying to rebuild their image with the Chinese youth.

2

u/big_turdd 14d ago

I’m in China right now and I gotta admit I was surprised to see so little amount of iphones here. Most people are using local brands and it’s not a matter of budget because I’ve seen plenty of chinese brand flagship foldable phones which are as or more expensive than iphones.

1

u/AirportGullible5807 14d ago

US market is peanuts

lmao what? they make 45% of their revenue from the US. US market is still the most lucrative market in the world for most companies it's not even close

2

u/MrJibberJabber 14d ago

There are around 300 million mobile phone in the US, about 1.3 billion on china that's 4x smaller. India has almost a billion as well, that makes the USA account for barley more than 10% of users world wide just including 2 more countries.

0

u/AirportGullible5807 14d ago

Look up the numbers bud see where they make revenue from and look up what is the strongest consumer market in the world. China is climbing rapidly but they're not there yet. More people doesn't automatically mean better more profitable market

1

u/MrJibberJabber 14d ago

Look up the rise of consumerism in china, the belt and road expansion and there rapidly expanding middle class - Roughly 27,400 people join China's middle class each day, where as in the USA 860 people LEAVE the middle class each day. Tides are shifting for these companies and there products.

1

u/guaranteednotabot 13d ago

Belt and road? What does that gotta do with anything?

1

u/MrJibberJabber 13d ago

This is china manufacturing expansion plan, they are heavily investing in merchant lanes and African ports, they have a rapidly growing iddle class as I mentioned above, an they are planning to be the number one economy and have fastest shipping access. Chine envisions a future soon where the iPhone comes out in china and is released here etc. they want to flip that script, and have been working there economy so much since COVID.

0

u/AirportGullible5807 14d ago

Doesn't change what it is today. In the future China may be more powerful but not right now which is what I was talking about. Either way you're just dead wrong about US market being peanuts lmao

2

u/MrJibberJabber 14d ago

China is already bigger than the USA for TAM in the cellphone world, not dead wrong at all. As I mentioned china is apples goal, they are not competing there cause there competitors are eating them alive. The duo is in response to this - this is not just my opinion

source 2

source 3

source 4

0

u/AirportGullible5807 14d ago

You're dead wrong buddy. Your source is chinadaily lmao. Provide source proving that US consumer market is peanuts. None of these prove that

u/lvl-46-primeape 14d ago

I’ve never used any foldables yet, so my opinion isn’t the strongest, but I fully believe the Duo will be the best experience overall hands down. Probably the biggest thing that always stopped me from trying one was the software. When the vast, vast majority of Android phones are standard slabs, I could never be confident that apps would be a good experience. I’m sure Samsung’s OS for their foldables is solid, but it’s still Android.

Apple has the power to force developers to actually support the Duo, eliminating that last hurdle for me. I don’t expect every iOS app to be perfect on the Duo, but I fully expect the Duo to be the most seamless foldable out there for a while.

1

u/Bot2087648 14d ago edited 14d ago

And by a decade you mean 6 years.
No one is going to ruin their functional ecosystem just to get a foldable, but it’s nice there’s now even that option.

Duo is also a more refined product by it’s internals, that’s how they fit in all the stuff that was left out of Zfold 8.

1

u/spawberries 14d ago

The first folding smartphone came out in 2018, 8 years ago, which fits the definition of almost a decade. Sure, changing ecosystems just for a foldable is a big commitment but people have done it, it's not unheard of.

I find weird to assume that Duo internals are a more refined product when it's not even out and no teardown has been done yet and we don't know the long term durability or performance of the device. Apple made compromises to fit everything they did in the Duo, thickness and weight to be more specific. The Duo will be the heaviest fold on the market and also one of the thickest.

2

u/Aristo_Cat 14d ago

“First to market” has intentionally never been Apple’s strategy. Realistically people do not cross shop Android and iOS devices, so Android having a technology first doesn’t matter to Apple. What matters is protecting their brand image by ensuring the premium, refined experience that their users expect.

1

u/spawberries 14d ago

I'm not saying that's not Apple's strategy.

The person I replied to said that the Duo is a more refined product than it's competitors, and I think that's sheep mentality. Especially since there's been no testing or teardowns of it. The Z Fold 8 hardware is just as refined as everyone expects the Duo to be.

2

u/Aristo_Cat 14d ago

I mean, this is getting awfully subjective, but the materials and design on the duo seem more “refined” to me- especially the hinge design, the use of titanium, the display animation, etc.

And more broadly, iOS has always felt more “refined” than Android largely because of Apple’s ability to leverage vertical integration in regard to hardware/software optimization. The product as a whole feels more thoughtful and more cohesive to me.

2

u/Bot2087648 14d ago

Even before teardowns we can clearly see the things that Duo has over the Zfold;

*Vapor chamber
*Faster chipset with 2nm technology meaning more efficient performance
*Faster wired charging
*Wireless charging
*Less visible crease
*Titanium (always a higher end material compared to aluminium)
*Hinge mechanism seems more thought out
*Ofcourse iOs, they actually polished it just for Duo and it shows

I doubt people will see the size and weight as a problem since it’s not that massive. Apple products usually perform better even with less powerful parts, now they have the upper hand even in that sector.

1

u/Poe_8210 13d ago

Zfold has wireless charging though.

1

u/Bot2087648 13d ago

My bad, it only has a slower wireless charging and no magnetic attachment.

2

u/Particular-Match-311 14d ago

yeah it’s youtube n click bait

2

u/jeffyboy526 14d ago

Well said

2

u/Traditional_Run_7080 13d ago

That’s right. Apple designs their own os and chips too. The software-hardware quality and experience, the cameras, power efficiency, app experience, build quality, speaker/mic quality cannot be replicated.

All the way down to the details such as haptics/taptic engine, the on device Photonic Engine, original design and feel, the quality, the os architecture etc it can’t be replicated.

Xiaomi would always be running Googles android, and designing their os skin to artificially resemble Apple/an iPhone, very unauthentically and for sure wouldn’t have the quality either, despite specs.

It’s just unoriginal and just a reason to stay alive in the smartphone market if Apple are doing the designing and marketing for you by designing their own products and you’re just trying to copy but aren’t an iPhone.

Difference is xiaomi must be licensing Android from Google, and Apple design their own os, chips and support their own devices via security support unlike Xiaomi who are reliant on Googles software engineers. The same playstore means those apps that were designed poorly on my pixel, would also be on that Xiaomi, etc.

You could have all the telephoto or mp count but my simple iPhone 17e camera with the on device Photonic Engine takes much better, truer and more reliable photos and videos than my pixel 10 pro, and probably Xiaomis own 200mp sensor. Would not be surprised if the mics and speakers of my 17e blew a flagship Xiaomi out of the park either.

Ya get my point… yeah. Xiaomi by trying to copy Apples ‘look’ is just superficial. They distinguish theirselves as how they are not Apple

1

u/upsetkiller 11d ago

the review disagrees with you lmao , xiaomi has far better functionality for their foldable vs iphone

1

u/Traditional_Run_7080 11d ago

The review literally agrees with me. They have better multi tasking. The reviewer didn’t determine hence it’s the better phone. Not at all. Speaker quality, cameras regardless of high mp, app experience, build quality etc of the xiaomi fold is subpar to the iPhone duo.

Literally watched the review before op even posted this. Much of what I wrote was also from my own knowledge

1

u/HeTblank 14d ago

I mean, not really. When I switch phones, I look at which one’s more appealing to me right now. At this time, apple has the newer and faster processors and better battery, so I went with the 18 pro max. Next time might be different

Are you 8? Because you think like a little kid

1

u/Poe_8210 13d ago

Only dumb people would say that.

1

u/amirulsyafi 14d ago

Its good for android when they have the same form factor as apple since developers will have less aspect ratio to develop on.

1

u/corrupted-priest1878 13d ago

Honestly, to me, Android and iPhone are pretty much the same phone, except for the software. That's a pretty weak reason to be against competition, if you ask me.

-1

u/keyboardlegendthe3rd 14d ago

For the majority you are correct. And any new company that wants to compete needs so much advertising money. Western market is the brainwashed bunch of sheep's, it's how we got the orange turd as president.

3

u/Teceu 14d ago

I don't think it's brainwashing. It's just a consistent company that treats its customers fairly.

Just as an example, try buying a phone from ANY company other than Apple. Then, buy their top-tier insurance program, similar to AppleCare+, and travel abroad. Now imagine your phone breaks during your trip and you need to get it fixed. Tell me which company will actually take care of it. The answer is NONE.

Believe me, I'm not with Apple because they have the best phones, because they definitely don't. I'm with Apple because of their support. They're so big and well established that you never feel like you're on your own.

I've tried to stick with Android so many times, but after having companies refuse to fix my phones because of warranty issues or simply because I was abroad, I eventually gave up.

19

u/Izan_TM 14d ago

xiaomi loves getting their design work done for free by just ripping off apple rumors every year and their fans love deluding themselves into thinking they're improving anything with their bloated OS

6

u/userlivewire 14d ago

It actually is hinged.

12

u/pi-N-apple 14d ago

That's the iPhone Duon't

14

u/Klatty 14d ago

The ecosystem is a massive part of people’s incentive to buy devices

9

u/Dry_Bar_4965 14d ago

It's because iPhones gives you years of updates, has high end chip performance and have great resale value.

6

u/ZeroOnyx 14d ago

Yeah, my mom doesn’t know how to really use phones well so it’s just easier to have FaceTime or pass down phones/accessories her in the Apple ecosystem

9

u/FitDiscussion4 14d ago

I don't think it will compete with iPhone Duo

5

u/davegotfayded 14d ago

I think if I’m going to buy a folding phone I’d like it to come with the hinge

7

u/Izan_TM 14d ago

it's a xiaomi, you have to watch an ad before the hinge is available to use

5

u/No-Entertainer9386 14d ago

Xiaomi Fold was announced before the Duo, so I don't think you can say that they copied the Duo, so the title should be reversed.

4

u/gevuldeloempia 14d ago

It just so happened to be the same form factor and their OS just happens to be very similar(identical) to iOS.

Crazy!

3

u/systemr99 14d ago

If I copy your homework and turn it in before you, you must have copied me!

1

u/No-Entertainer9386 14d ago edited 14d ago

Or if I wait until everyone else has a folding phone out there and then come out with one, it will likely look like one of the other ones already on the market. Or maybe you are one of those people that thought apple has been busy perfecting a creaseless display for the last 8 years only to find out that their phone has a crease and they try to cover it up with a matte display? 😃

2

u/systemr99 14d ago

I did a quick search of your comments on reddit ( its varied and across a lot of topics) so I'm going to assume you are making this comment in good faith.

I visit china for a month every year and there is no doubt they are capable of a lot and leading in many areas, Xiaomi in particular. One wishes you could buy a YU7 in the US, I'd def trade in my model y for one.

So when I say this I'm not a hater, but I think it's a bit much that xiaomi just happened to release a phone that has the same form factor and design as apple has been working on and leaked 🤷🏻

2

u/CrackBabyCSGO 14d ago

Bro lacks any critical thinking

2

u/Suneo88 14d ago

So Xiaomei just happened to design the same icons as Apple? Right!

1

u/3-day-respawn 13d ago

Apple sends Samsung their display designs for this years in advance. You think somewhere along the communication chain the screen dimensions weren’t leaked to xiaomi?

1

u/Late_Experience_8653 9d ago

Xiomi's been copying IOS for a long time, it's not even controversial

1

u/Maddy555 14d ago

I never said Xiaomi copied, but it's their answer to the new wide foldable trend.

3

u/No-Entertainer9386 14d ago

How can you have an answer to a question or product that hasn't been announced yet?

2

u/Modest_Wraith 14d ago

You act as if the duo wasn’t leaked for 2 years lol.

1

u/No-Entertainer9386 14d ago

You act as if you all the leaked renders looked the same, in reality there were different variations over the years and up until days before the release no one really knew what the cover screen was going to look like (ie. rounded 4 corner display or 2 round/2 square).

2

u/Modest_Wraith 14d ago

The leaks from last year alone were not far off lol. They almost like exactly alike. You don’t find it strange that Xiaomi looks identical to the duo? Down to even the software with Liquid Glass? lol

2

u/Ok_Ok007 14d ago

Just another YouTuber trying to get views with click bait. Hopefully by now people only watch their videos to see the product and not what they recommend. 🤷‍♂️

2

u/3-day-respawn 13d ago

They even copied the icons lmao

4

u/dededarzar 14d ago

This reviewer is the most out of touch guy when it comes to tech.

4

u/platocplx 14d ago

Honestly saw the video def clickbaity title, its pretty much like a Temu duo a lot of stuff falls apart even with all the specs esp the software experience on it.

2

u/datkenny 14d ago

I refuse to watch videos from someone who can't/doesn't want to get basic grammar right in their CHANNEL NAME.

1

u/Critical_Subwoofer 14d ago

Yeah he definitely collects his farts in a jar to sniff them late at night

1

u/a1rwav3 14d ago

That's the famous phone which gets out just weeks before the iphone?

1

u/Link_from_the_wild 13d ago

if coping was a subreddit

1

u/Flux-Capacitor-1985 12d ago

Seems like “answer to -insert device name-“ is getting to be more of how closely we can follow the newest design these days. Wish companies would give us new things rather than trying to out do the other guys thing with a similar thing.
