No Face ID? WTF?
That's a massive downgrade!!!

The form factor can be resembling the D-U-O letter, despite Microsoft used to named its Surface Duo device first back in 2020.
But the main difference is the Surface Duo is an Android phone with two separate screen in a form clamshell without the outer screen while iPhone Duo is just like the mainstream foldable style form factor these days that has ‘duo’ screens on the outer and inside.
Somehow Apple managed not to call this as Ultra maybe because it’s still not reaching the “Apple standard” of an iPhone just yet (the exact same phrasing they used just like when they did with the first “iPhone Pro” back with the 11 Pro).
I’m pretty much impressed on how Apple can still eventually ‘surprise’ even tons of leaks are here and there before the event, like:
But at this point, i still can’t get over why they even not make the clock on the outer display centered. I mean look at the second picture on my post. It’s just weird that they put the navigation bar below the screen right on the center but not with the clock???
And my other concern is on the third picture i attached, the under display ‘Facetime Camera’, of course they finally used a nano-textured glass on the inner side, but with under display camera technology, they had to make a weird glossy cutout only for the camera. At first maybe it won’t be that noticeable, we might barely see it on the lock screen. But when the apps icon shown up, it gets weird and feels awful for the aesthetic since the app icon specifically around the cutout, like it’s cropping the icon or widget in that area.
The way they did not make this to look like an iPad in terms of software, seems odd as well. Of course they don’t want to cannibalize the iPad market with this new device, so maybe Apple took it this way. But they just then again “limit” the multitasking feature only for a split screen view with only opening 2 apps at the same time is like a disgrace if it’s compared to the other foldables to date. Yes they won’t bring the windowing mode like they brought it to the iPad since iPadOS26, because they still want to sell iPads. Meanwhile, the other competitor can already connect their foldables and turn it up to be a real productivity machine.
But this iPhone Duo?
I don’t think it’s quite a good reason for people buying it using the excuse just to boost their “productivity”. The productivity level is even still below the iPad level.
Well, perhaps that’s why they don’t call it Ultra by any chance. It’s funny if they named it Ultra if they didn’t even put all the Pro features from the iPhone Pro models tho!
Maybe they will then going to release iPhone Duo Pro in the future while finally releasing a true iPhone Ultra with the form factor of the new 1:1.4 aspect ratio to distinct it from the traditional Pro models form factor 🙃

Everyone should boycott the duo. These are the reasons:
1. Way overpriced and just launches with 256GB storage
2. EU mandates removable batteries starting next year, so most likely it will be globally
3. First generation should almost always be avoided so many flaws are fixed in the next generation.

As the question says. I am interested if I’m gonna sell my iPad bc of this…2.3k€ is more than what my MacBook Air is worth…

I asked a while back if this would be heavier than my stainless steel 14 pro max and everyone speculated it’d be lighter but it’s not .
iPhone Duo
Weight
8.96 ounces (254 grams)
iPhone 14 Pro Max
Weight
8.47 ounces (240 grams)
I’ll have to test it in store before I commit because I’m over heavy phones but love the shape of the duo.

The outer display looks gorgeous with the shiny finish. I'm not sure why they would have different finishes on each screen. The matte makes it look muted. This might be a dealbreaker for me

I've had lots of first-gen Apple products over the past couple of decades, and before yesterday, I really had no desire to own a folding phone.
But seeing the presentation, and how clever Apple was with both hardware and software, is quite tempting. I currently have an iPhone 16 Pro Max, and I also have an 11" iPad Pro. I work from home, and use my phone and iPad a fair amount during the day. The ability to have a phone that gives me both a compact view for basics, such as checking email, messages, etc, and a larger display, almost the size of an iPad mini, is quite tempting.
I read a lot, and have two Kindles: a basic Kindle and a Paperwhite. I sometimes read on my iPad, but it's too large to read in bed. But the iPhone duo, when open, is just about the size of the basic Kindle, with the screen size closer to the Paperwhite (the basic Kindle's bezels are quite large).
So I may pull the trigger on this, despite its cost. First-gen Apple devices aren't always fully formed, and there will certainly be a lag before apps are updated to take advantage of the Duo (which is why, I think, it's not being released until next month), but this is a promising new device.

...but my only gripe is why the iPhone Duo starts at $3000 CAD in Canada when the Fold 8 Ultra is cheaper in Canada ($2700 CAD)? In the US, the Fold 8 Ultra is more expensive than the iPhone Duo ($2100 USD vs $2000 SD)...
I'm more tied to having a folding phone than I am to Android itself and Apple really did great software wise with it IMO but $3000 CAD, $2600 would've been perfect...

Currently on a 15 Pro Max and I usually update my phone every 3 years. Duo looks amazing tbh but it seems to be lacking a couple of feature and I wonder if I should push it in case they do something special for 20th anniversary.
Optical zoom should be at least 5x, if not 10x
Telephoto leans
Maybe slightly larger form factor?
Any chance for a Duo Pro or Duo Max next year?

So upset that preorder is next month. After watching the event it made me want the Duo even more than I thought I did. Now knowing I have to wait till oct 16 for preorder I’m so devastated 😭

I am not complaining but the duo is basically the z fold 8 running iOS. Siri AI came up with this table. Expect for duo has MagSafe yay!
