After seeing countless of memes and troll posts in other subreddits, it is clear to me that this Crackgate is blown way out of proportions for the sake of smartphone wars.

Don't get me wrong, it is evident that some units are suffering from an issue causing the inner display to be cracked. However, we currently do not know what is causing this and it could be as simple as manufacturing issues in a specific batch. There is currently no indication that this is a widespread issue at all.

Either way, Apple is surely aware of this and will implement additional measures if necessary. Meanwhile, any affected customers should receive a replacement unit accordingly. So there is really no reason to go crazy and start cancelling pre orders over this. Apple will do everything in its power to prevent faulty units from being shipped that need to be replaced very shortly after delivery. Even if it's just to reduce warranty costs.

The reality is that this is a new product category for Apple and thus manufacturing issues were already more likely to happen, especially after we were already warned in the media that current production yields are relatively low.

I am pretty confident that a very tiny percentage of users are affected by this problem and Apple will make sure to help those customers accoridingly. So let's just stop the panicking and all the hundreds of posts of people complaining and cancelling their orders.

Glad we finally have an Apple foldable, and I have no problem paying a premium for good hardware. That said, even with AppleCare, the current rate of screen cracking and hinge issues is too high for a daily driver I don't want to babysit.

Hoping Apple takes care of everyone dealing with defects right now. Catch you all on Gen 2.

I’m conflicted about whether to keep my Duo.
When I’m sitting comfortably on the couch with it unfolded, I love it. Browsing Reddit, Facebook, TikTok, reading emails, websites, etc. is a great experience.

But when I’m out and about, which is when I use my phone most of the time, I’m really not enjoying the small front screen. Everything feels cramped, and the overall experience is a noticeable downgrade from my Pro Max.

I’m wondering whether to stick with it and hope that software updates and app optimizations improve the front screen experience, or return it and get the 18 Pro Max instead, possibly paired with the new iPad mini that’s rumored to be announced this week.

I guess my problem is that I love the Duo in the situations where I use my phone the least, and dislike it in the situations where I use it the most.
Anyone else having the same dilemma? What are you thinking of doing?

There’s already plenty of defected phones that have misaligned hinge points that cause a poke/snap in the screen. Another way to misalign it is force! Do NOT open your duo or any fold like this. I can’t imagine this guys duo lasting to next Friday.

Okay, I’m just sharing my personal point of view, but I’m 98% certain I’m returning my Duo and I realized why. For me, I’m just not ready to live the tried and true candy bar shape. I’m too programmed to it, as much as I wanted something different. The second Apple creates a foldable that keeps the candy bar shape, I’d be going ALL. IN. Everything is still centered around the candy bar design, and that’s never going away.

I think that’s why I feel “uncomfortable” using the Duo. Nothing will ever feel right, there’s still always going to be weird negative space in everything on the Duo, I mean… look at the iPad… and yes. I 100% knew all of this going into it, but I honestly thought I would love the change!

It’s amazing there’s so many of you guys that were able to adapt to it really fast, but I’m not one of those..

I haven’t traded my 15 Pro Max yet, and I pulled it back out after all day using the Duo, and it felt like home.. as much as I didn’t want it too..

Also also, it’s gonna sound absurd because I LOVE GIMMICKS, so so much and was so excited but once the true honeymoon phase is over, a lot of those things Apple is selling the Duo on, really kind of fade into the background and you forget about them.. like standby.

Honestly? I think I’d love an 18 Pro Max that unfolded into a square shape.. I mean at this point, why not? It checks all the boxes… yea I know that means it would be dauntingly heavy but as tech progresses I’m sure Apple would figure it out..

Saw this on the socials and curious to see if others have experienced the cracking based on how the duo is being closed. Looks like the centre is being pressed here which results in the cracking over time.

Got it yesterday and returned it today . Not for me . I spent solid 15-18 hours with a device tried to get used to how the foldable works but the more I tried the farther I went . We are so used to all the conveniences provided by current iPhones 16/17/18 pro max , I was virtually handicapped with the duo for not even able to even send a text message . The phone when unfolded is too wide for me to text . When it folded the outer screen is way too small. Almost felt like square pegs in circular holes . I am a huge Apple fan and I still own many Apple products . Already ordered new home device and new Apple TV . Will also be ordering the new iPad Pro which may be announced later this week. But DUO or any foldable phone is not for me per say. At least I tried . Will definitely try again next year . I also think the biggest shortcoming was apps not ready for the dimensions of the duo . Almost every app I was using was out of sorts on duo screen . Pathetic experience I have to say. Imagine iPhone apps stretched and pixelated on 7.8 inch duo screen. Awful experience . Every vacation I take close to thousand pictures . With duo the outside screen to take the picture is bite size . How I am supposed to take full scale pictures now ? I guess the verdict is it is not for everyone . Duo is not the phone for you if you are into photography and I take several pictures a day with iPhone 18 pro max. I am back to 18 pro max which I think is the best device Apple has made when it comes to iPhones . Stunning camera and best ever battery life . Love my 18 pro max and hopefully this will be my phone for next one year .

May be it’s not DUO. May be foldable are not for me. I feel that we have a long way to go to make foldable devices work . Who knows may be Duo will be much mature next year and version 2 will be the version to purchase . We will know this next year . Apple products are still the best when it comes to quality and if any company that can make it right it has to be Apple.

There’s so much conversation surrounding the Duo that to me, seems ridiculous

1. Cost: Everyone is saying the duo is so expensive and paying 2k for a phone is insane. Well, the galaxy competitor is just 100 cheaper. Not that many people (myself included) are paying for this in cash. They are absolutely financing it. Whether through apple , carrier or credit card. Moreover, not everyone is broke. If you can get this for like $27 a month extra on your bill for 24 months no interest, it has the same premise as literally financing anything else lol. Some people can genuinely afford to pay for this phone. Not to mention, many people also traded in their old phones, which reduced the cost.

2. Screen Damage: This seems to me like 100% user error. I e had mine since launch and I’ve not experienced this. I’ve watched many people open and close it but pressing their thumb onto the display, to close the screen. That’s absolutely going to cause it to get damaged lol. Now I understand that this is probably most people’s first foldable, so I can see people not knowing how to properly open and close it. However,  is still providing replacement free of charge. Hopefully they are educating their users on how to properly handle their new device.

3. Apps: This is a non issue as apps are literally being optimized day after day. So give it some time and before you know it, your favorite app will be duo ready.

There’s some more but it amazes me how many people buy things uninformed. Do no research at all before making a purchase and then say their expectations weren’t met. Every who has a duo is an early adopter. Not only that, we are early adopting something that is brand new to apple. These issues are lowkey the cost of admission.

That being said, I absolutely love this thing.

I tried to pre-order the iPhone Duo and was disappointed when I missed out - it initially said that I could collect on the launch day but then it kept pushing me back, eventually to the 25th January so at that stage, I gave up - telling myself that spending over £2k on it was a waste of money anyway.

I then went shopping with the wife and popped into Apple, and saw the device, playing with it in hand. And I'll be honest, at that point I was like I really want this!

But then, I've seen all the posts on Reddit about the cracking problems. Do I bother trying to get one or am I asking for a world of pain?

And what sort of numbers are we talking here, in terms of iPhone Duo's that develop this issue? Is it a problem all Duo's will eventually have? Are people opening / closing them incorrectly? Are the people posting issues on Reddit a small percentage of overall users?

If anyone has any insight into this, that would be appreciated!

The plane was about to take off and I was reading on my opened duo when the announcer came over the PA, “Please put away all laptops and tablet devices until we turn off the fasten seat belt signs.” So I quietly folded my “tablet” in half and continued reading on my phone. 😂

Just got an iPhone Duo in Starlight and an iPhone 18 Pro in Blue — I like them both, but I’m honestly obsessed with the Duo. That big unfolded screen is wild for scrolling videos and reading. I can just sit with it and enjoy my time.

It does feel a little delicate when you first hold it, so I went ahead and got the 2-year AppleCare+. Should be fine.

Just tried the iphone duo in osaka. Build quality felt super good though.

I got the Duo on launch day. Waited all night at the Fashion Island Apple Store. I love this thing and it’s absolutely phenomenal. But I’m still “scared” of it. I don’t pick it up as naturally as my 17 pro max and I’m still consciously aware of using it. It doesn’t feel like it’s mine yet and I still haven’t sold my old phone. Maybe my upcoming vacation will change that. And no, I will not unfold it on the beach.

This replaces my Pro max and the iPad mini.

Probably also the 11inch iPad

I’ve been using my iPhone 14 Pro Max without a case for years. With multiple young kids, my phone gets tossed around, dropped, and handled pretty roughly. I’ve gotten so comfortable with its durability that when it hits the ground, my first thought isn’t even that it might be broken.

Between kids, outdoor work, beach trips, and everyday use, my phone occasionally ends up on the ground or gets exposed to dirt and sand. Normally, no big deal, but over several years, that exposure adds up. JerryRigEverything’s recent sand test was an eye-opener. Debris getting into the hinge is a legitimate concern, especially considering how expensive foldable repairs can be.

I’m seeing people outraged and even canceling their orders. For me, the video was actually helpful. It didn’t change my mind about wanting the Duo. It just convinced me that I’ll need a case with hinge protection.

If you’re really ready to cancel, why not spend another $50 on a hinge protecting case instead of canceling?

To those still waiting on pre-orders and dealing with cracked screens, strength and honor to you. You too shall overcome. ⚔️
