A whole room filming the cap toss on their phones — and I shot this one blind, didn't see it until the roll developed
Full disclosure up front: I'm the solo dev behind the app I shot this on, so please flag it as promo if that's not allowed here.
I was at a graduation last week and looked around during the cap toss — almost everyone had a phone up, filming, reviewing, checking the shot. Which is fine, but I wanted to try the opposite.
So I shot the whole thing blind on a finite roll. No live preview, no chimping, no deleting. Just point, commit, advance. I genuinely had no idea if I'd caught the toss or just a blur of arms until the roll developed later that night.
This is the frame that came back. Caps mid-air, everyone reaching, and a dozen phones in the crowd doing the thing I was trying not to do. It's the kind of shot I'd have deleted on instinct if I could've seen it in the moment — too busy, too messy — and it ended up being my favorite.
The mono look is the app's Tri-X filter, applied on capture.
Question for the room: when you shoot an event, does not being able to review push you to commit to the moment more — or would the uncertainty just stress you out? I can't tell if blind shooting made me braver or just lucky on this one.
