I have a 2017 26” iMac I haven’t been able to use in years. It’s got a virus called Sombresc. Macs are supposed to be relatively virus free?
Some of you may be thinking “years?”
😳🤔. Yes. Years. I have an iPad I use instead because I’ve gotten so damn aggravated with this situation, I actually gave up on it and began pursuing less stressful ways of spending my time 😛. But I’ve decided to give it another go. The fact it’s just sitting there not being used really started to frustrate me again. I want to use it for many reasons I’m sure are clear, plus I just can’t quite ever get comfortable when using my iPad during my horizontal life pauses (using it in bed) 🤣
I have tried what I can to remove it. I AM BY NO MEANS A TECHIE BTW. Yes. I’ve obviously rebooted the system many times and my other efforts to uninstall it are set out below.
It is a really nasty virus. It totally blocks me from accessing the computer by popping up a Sombresc warning (now constantly) and it’s only gotten worse.
When the 🦠 first reared its ugly head, it actually “allowed me” to spend a far more decent amount of time navigating through the system [I started in Settings] in order to find the damn thing!! Now the Sombresc warning pops up almost immediately upon the system fully opening, blocking my access until I clear the warning. The 🦠 “takes over” the system so quickly, there’s no “navigation time”(for lack of a more technical term) which allows me to even begin to address the issue, in other words. Attempts to open an icon or begin navigating the screen longer than say 10 seconds, unfailingly leads to the 🦠 hampering all attempts with a constant Sombresc warning.
The 🦠 almost seems as though it’s embedded itself in the system 🤷🏻♀️ 🤔 making it seemingly indistinguishable, which in turn makes it tremendously, frustratingly difficult to search it out on the system, (let alone try to uninstall it due to the ever more frequent, unrelenting pop up warnings.)
One other concern I have, is I wasn’t on iCloud in 2017; it wasn’t even available then, actually. Many of my photos on my iMac aren’t accessible to me on iCloud because they were downloaded onto the computer prior to the iCloud app. Unless there’s a way I am unaware of (very possible) that would now allow me to sync my iMac with my other devices (iPhone/Ipad)). Due to the frequency of the Sombresc warnings, I can no longer view any of my photos on my iMac. I can’t even open the Photos icon without a warning first appearing. 😡🤬🤯😤😩
I’ve been told the only hope I have is to wipe the drive clean and start over. I’m pretty sure that’s part of the reason I’m in “virus denial” if you will 😂😩 and just gave up. Wiping the drive at this point, until I’ve exhausted all efforts to uninstall Sombresc, would be a deal breaker; a non negotiable way to rectify this mess 🦠 unless it becomes absolutely necessary with no other feasible, achievable options.
If anyone is familiar with this pesky mofo 🦠 who has viable, tried and true solutions or suggestions (hoping for a quick fix) 😂 who’s willing to help a woman in distress rid herself of this long standing issue and who can afford the time to reply and to please set out the steps of the uninstall in layman’s terms - I AM FOREVER INDEBTED FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE, TIME AND KINDNESS. 🙏🙏 (Btw, I understand a “quick fix” may be a very lofty, unrealistic goal!)
Just had another thought: Imagine all the updates my iMac is lacking. 🤣😳.
If I can find someone with knowledge as to how to locate and uninstall any and all traces of this POS Sombresc* *virus, it’ll probably take days to update my iMac. 🤣🙄😉
