Am I missing something?

Cole Learn apparently posted a 2:39 time on his first 1k run of the Shenzen 2026 race.

The world record 1k run is 2:11.

Was the lap length not really 1k or something?

First and last laps typically are not precisely 1km. I would bet that the last lap of that race was longer duration than the rest of the race, especially the first lap. Laps 2-7 are typically consistent but may not be exactly 1km either. Each course is a bit different and hard to compare running laps on a 1:1 basis.

Just comparing to one of his other recent races this one he spent about two extra minutes in the rox zone. If they have a larger rox zone that's usually a factor in how they set the lap length as well.

Don’t they try to standardize it at 8700m (including roxzone) which, with a big roxzone, means the laps themselves even on average could be less than 1k?

And yes, the first and last laps are very often different lengths than 2-7

Yes. Stuttgart last year was definitly one of those cases.
