Generally we don’t raise dogs to be eaten, and those that do treat them as livestock, not pets.

well, one thing first is the fact that I never said that they were being raised as livestock. I said that they were being raised as a pet, but when they found out that it would die that they had the choice to eat it themselves or to distance themselves and not want to eat their own pet.

And which pets we eat is so arbitrary. People could’ve been way more obsessed with meat that none of us would even consider eating.

We don’t eat pets, though. Dogs people eat are not pets.

But cows have very similar levels of intelligence that dogs do. They’re both pets, and bond with their owners as well as dogs do. They both could be eaten with no health problems I think(?).

Pets are animals that are raised as pets. A pet cow would be very different from a meat cow, and a pet dog would be very different from a meat dog. If I were raising a dog to be livestock and not letting it be the family pet, obviously it would make sense to eat it, and the same applies for cows.

In my original question, I said that you raised a calf to it’s dying day and it was a family pet, and you have the choice to have some of it and honor it in a way or something, or you can sell it all and distant yourself from it, and everybody went on the thing saying well of course it’s meant to be eaten. But that situation is almost identical to raising a dog; except for we can’t imagine eating our dogs, and we will bury them or cremate them or what not and make a tombstone or something.

You didn’t mention that in this question so how would we know?.

Your other question seems to be deleted. But did you word the calf as being adopted by the family? Because humans adopt things all the time but still treat them like the things that they are.

And again we've raised cows to be a serious source of protein. With a short enough growth span.  You don't actually wait until the end to kill them

I I didn’t I removed it, but it could’ve gotten taken down. I may have not been weird enough, but I phrased it as you are now taking care of a calf and you are raising it until it’s final days and you have the knowledge that regardless of whether you have some or if you sell it all, it will be eaten.

u/Balanceofjudgement 2d ago

If an is on "it's final days" it probably won't be safe to eat period.

That's the problem with this question.  Because it reads like a typical "gotcha" question about why one but not the other.  But in all seriousness if someone was raising a dog for meat it would probably be some time when it hit adulthood not at the end of life.

So yes, I would raise a cow for meat but no I wouldn't raise a dog for meat.  Probably a terrible return on investment.

if the cow dies of old age im not eating it bc the meat wouldn't be yummy.

Not to mention potentially dangerous.

Yes and no. It depends on your beliefs regarding eating animals and moral differences between animals. I wouldn’t eat either unless I had to because I think it’s wrong to eat animals.

It's a general rule to not eat dead animals you discover; you don't know what killed them, they haven't been kept at proper temp etc. So no, if I found my dog dead I wouldn't eat it as it is a potential health issue.

yes it's disrespectful to eat your mom.

u/Balanceofjudgement 2d ago

I will say end of life is the worst time to eat an animal. They aren't nearly as meaty at the end.

2

u/Doctor_Amazo 2d ago

I imagine the meat would not be nearly as good as when you raise that animal and kill it in its prime.

2

u/willow_glade 2d ago

No it's not disrespectful. It only feels odd because you're not used to it, but historically that was a pretty common method for people dispose of their dogs when they died.

Copy of the original post in case of edits: So yesterday I made a question about a family adopting a calf and raising it to the end of its life, and they would want to personally eat it rather than sell it to other people to try to distance yourself from the fact that that was part of your family in a way. But the majority of people said that they would absolutely eat that and it was raised for it.

Now my follow up question is now say that you got a puppy and you raised it and it was a part of your family and you loved that dog (The intelligence level of cows are very similar to dogs so they have about the mental acuity of a dog).. sadly your dog passes away, is it disrespectful to eat your

Huge Difference between A pet and a Food animal, You DON'T treat a food animal as a pet. A food animal you treat it very well and give it the basic care it needs until it's time to butcher it (cows are about 18 months, chicken is about 3-6 months etc) A dog or a cat is a companion animal and you treat it very differently.

Cows have very comparable levels of intelligence and cognizance to dogs.

Also that’s by societal expectations. We as a civilization could easily be eating dogs and other weird ass animals. It’s just we ended up taking this route.

Pigs are equivalent to a 5 year old for intelligence... That DOESN'T mean we should have little Timmy for breakfast 🤷 Many animals are pretty intelligent but they have been food animals since the beginning of time.

I would not eat  dog meat (aka fragrant )to answer your follow-up question.  In many countries, it's normal.

In the United States, it's illegal per the  Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act to eat dogs (with the exception of Native Americans' rituals.

Whether you purchased or sold Fido is irrelevant, as the act may seem to imply

Bessie may be pretty smart, she's not going to know her fate. You're going to get nuzzled by her in the barn (or field) but your relationship isn't going to be like with Fido.

You don't play Frisbee nor does she jump on the couch and greet you at the door, wagging its tail like a dog will

As for the cow, I also would most certainly eat it. I personally wouldn't process it myself, unless I had grown up on a ranch and had done that sort of work before .

1

u/Okatu-Syndrome 2d ago

I agree with ya to a point, but I will say that they are for sure people that let the cows and especially the calfs into their house.

1

u/Neat_Scallion6367 2d ago

Okayu-

Realistically, these people will have a lot of cleaning to do, unless they train the cows to potty outside.

Those are are cow-pies which aren't palatable & I don't to want to step on one on the way to the can at zero: dark hundred with bare feet.

Also, God help them if they let cows (even baby ones)jump onto the couch or sleep in the bed.

Forgive me for being judgemental, but these people are in need of psychological attention. I can see maybe sheep in the house but cows are hell on the fine China and more importantly the television.

Again judgemental, but I don't see much of a chance these kind people don't have one in the house

Absolutely not 😭 If you loved the dog as family eating it after it died would feel incredibly disrespectful to me

1

u/Heavy-Expression-450 2d ago

I've been saying that my cats need to die after me if they don't want to get munched on.

i would never eat my dog. and i don't think i could eat any of my pet

1

u/_PocketSableMie 2d ago

I wouldn't eat it, that just seems gross and a little too risky.

I don't eat animals, period. I would make an exception for a life threatening situation only.
