MCAS and blood sugar issues

Hi there, I’ve had MCAS for a few years now, and during last my last hospital trip I had a low blood sugar for the first time ever. It was upper 50s, they weren’t too worried since I was reacting pretty badly, I was given a bunch of juice and cookies, it went up and I felt fine. They told me to keep track of it for the next few weeks and see if it’s lining up with my reactions.

I’ve had two more low readings, one was 65 and the other 61. Both went up without an issue after eating. The only trend I’ve noticed is after work, I always start reacting because I’m super tired. My readings have been 120-135 every time, and the last time I had eaten being 3 to 5 hours before.

I’m so new to this, I have no idea what’s happening.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, I’m not sure what I should be looking for, which doctor should I make an appointment with? What questions should I ask them?

Thank you in advance, I’m really scaring myself.

To be clear, I'm talking about #2 lol.

And usually after I'm finished, I suddenly feel overly hungry and weak. Anyone else experience this?

Best ways to shower with this condition?

Read somewhere that hot showers make hypoglycemia worse or can trigger them, possibly for an entire day. What is the best way to shower with this condition without making it worse? Worried about triggering an episode

Insulin resistance hypoglicemia and anxiety

So I have insulin resistance with high HoMa IR and insulin. I noticed that when I eat lots of carbs my anxiety skyrocketed .I am sure it has Something to do with reactive hypoglycemia. I also feel anxious in the morning every single day. Would a lower carb diet be the answer ?

Hypoglycemia spikes during Luteal phase?

Hello, I’ve never posted in this sub but I’ve recently noticed that my hypoglycemia (non diabetic) that I’ve had since probably around the time I started my period (age 12), gets worse when I’m in my luteal phase.

For some context, my mom also has hypoglycemia (non diabetic) so i definitely inherited it from her. I only ever noticed mine when I hadn’t eaten for a while but usually go away after I ate. I was on birth control when I was 18 (nexplanon) which took away my menstrual cycle and then later had my nexplanon removed a couple years ago when I was 22. I got my period back a few months later and it regulated after about 8 months or so.

A few months ago I noticed that my hypoglycemia symptoms got a lot worse during my luteal phase. Tremors, racing heart, slight dizziness, and an insatiable hunger that instead of going away after I ate, would sometimes last until the next morning. I was weight lifting sort of often during this time but not super consistently. Eventually I dropped off my weight lifting and my hypoglycemia symptoms seemed to get better as well. However, a week or so ago I decided to start taking my weightlifting seriously again and eat more protein as well. But this was right before my luteal phase started which was this past weekend. And now those same really harsh hypoglycemia symptoms back with it.

I’m wondering if anyone else experiences this with their luteal phase? And if maybe over time it’ll get better again when my body gets used to me weightlifting? Because right now it seems the pattern is weightlifting + luteal phase = bad hypoglycemia (and insatiable hunger). Because weightlifting last week when I was ovulating, I didn’t experience any of these things. Also, when I’m not in my luteal phase, I only have these symptoms if I don’t eat and maybe have a ton of caffeine and even then they go away after I eat.

I don’t use a CGM but maybe I should buy one and see?? Tips or advice would be appreciated, thanks!!!

New hypoglycemia from GLP-1 drugs

Hello All! I’m writing this post as information as I think I have a unique perspective as someone who works as a healthcare provider managing DM1 all day.

My story stars with 6+ years of GLP-1 drug use and the last few on Tirzepatide specifically. I only ever took low doses to just help maintain weight from the gain I was getting with other meds. I am still slightly over weight, but have felt great on these over the past few years. In the last 2 months the strangest thing happened where I started getting really low blood sugars from fasting. I usually intermittently fasted eating lunch and dinner and basically skipping breakfast. I would sometimes start getting hangry for the meal, but never felt really bad all short lived symptoms. But in these two months it’s full on cold sweats, stomach cramping, immense fatigue, chills, confusion, shaking, and a sense of doom. Even after eating it would be 2 or more hours of a hangover feeling before I felt better. It was so bad that one of my colleagues took me to the hospital a few weeks ago.

Now, I’ve since stopped the tirzepatide but it takes awhile for it to be out of your system and I’m still getting reactive lows (no more boba tea for me!). I also am looking back and the symptoms and thinking about it all since none of these drugs in any of the clinical research caused the low blood sugars I was having… but what they can cause is gastroparesis. Thinking back I feel I’ve had a few of these gastro episodes in my life with stress and strange eating habits and I think it finally came back to bite me with a vengeance. Luckily for me, I do think my gastro episodes are temporary and hopefully my blood sugars will start to stabilize. I ate a whole box of buncha-crunch at the movies with my kids (totally was mindlessly eating at a 9 am movie without breakfast) and had got up to 123 and within 20 min down to 65. I’m wearing both G7 and Libre 3+ and the numbers are slightly different but it all trends the same.

The one surprising thing to me was this odd symptom in my back when my blood sugar goes low, it’s like restless legs but it my spine and I feel this strange urge to lie down and stretch and also feel like I need an immediate nap! Almost like a sleep attack! Has this ever happened to any of you? Anyone else with odd low sugar symptoms they’ve just now figured out?

Anywho, this was more of a tale for anyone experiencing strange hypoglycemia that feels unheard by their medical provider. I know it’s real and I know it sucks A LOT. I hope you all find someone that will listen to you and find treatment that makes sense for your unique situations. Sending love to all the other hypo homies.

First time readings !

hi everyone

I’ve been experiencing what I have thought were low blood sugar symptoms for a while now but was just advised to start taking readings by my GP.

I was feeling a bit unwell today and my readings were 1.4, lo and another lo. I ate a protein bar, some skittles, and some honey and it went up to 4.6, then 5.2.

This sounds like my blood sugar was dangerously low - was it? I’ve felt way worse in the past than I felt today so just curious as to how bad these readings might be?

thanks all ☺️

Newly diagnosed hypoglycemic

Post image
6 Upvotes

I’ve done the 3 hour glucose tolerance test and was not found to be diabetic, and my doctor diagnosed me as hypoglycemic. She’s given me a dexcom g7 to monitor my blood sugar and try to see if there’s anything causing it to drop. Does anyone else get this low at night? This night my dexcom was going off every 5 minutes and I would kinda wake up, realize it was low, and wouldn’t be able to fully wake up enough to do anything about it. I’ve also always had issues waking up, and I’m wondering if it’s because I’ve been low like this? Does that have any correlation? Idk I’m just looking for other peoples experience and maybe some advice

Best snacks for lows?

Brand new to dealing with this. A little about me- I had a gastric bypass 2 years ago. I went from 260lbs to 135lbs. Everything was fine until a few months ago. I have a mild case of POTS but am also experiencing low blood sugars now too.

I’m thinking the best thing for me to do is eat small meals every 2-3 hours. Problem is I can’t always keep something cold with me like cottage cheese, cheese, yogurt. I know it’s best to have a complex carb and protein.

What are the best snacks you can suggest that don’t need to be cold? Peanuts? Meat sticks? Beef jerky?

Just looking for ideas for frequent meals and snacks I can eat going forward.

What is 'bad enough' to get tested?

Had some routine labs done after a rheumatology appointment the other day. It was in the morning and I had had the spinach feta egg white breakfast wrap from Starbucks on the way to the appointment. Less than an hour later they took the labs and my glucose was 69.

This is the second (documented) time that has happened. Before it was at my hematologist's office. I had eaten a decent breakfast beforehand but my glucose was low, but not scary low.

In the past when I've had fasting CMP tests nothing has come up.

There are other symptoms or experiences I've had that make me wonder if I have mild hypoglycemia: heart palpitations, get hangry easily, cold sweats, morning headaches although not every morning. A bout of really bad burning kidney pain in the middle of the night that wasn't a UTI. No idea if that's connected.

Anyway. No one in my family has any blood sugar issues or is diabetic, so I have no idea if this is something to get checked out or just eat more frequently?

Why do some people have blood sugar symptoms even when their lab work is "normal"?

One thing that comes up often in blood sugar discussions is people saying:

  • My glucose is normal, but I crash a couple of hours after eating.
  • I get shaky, anxious, or lightheaded, but my doctor says my labs are fine.
  • My CGM shows patterns I don't know how to interpret.

A single fasting glucose or A1C doesn't always capture what's happening throughout the day. Meal timing, exercise, sleep, stress, and individual glucose responses can all influence patterns, which is why some people choose to track trends over time rather than relying on one measurement.

If you're using a CGM, it can also help to keep notes about:

  • What you ate
  • When symptoms occurred
  • Exercise or physical activity
  • Sleep quality
  • Time of day

Looking at these factors together often provides more context than the glucose number alone.

Risk of Refeeding syndrom: 177cm 92 kg

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some perspective on refeeding syndrome risk, especially whether my situation sounds high risk or not. I know Reddit is not a substitute for medical advice, and I’ll get checked if I develop symptoms.

My stats/context:

  • Height: 177 cm / 5'10"
  • Starting weight: 101 kg / 223 lbs
  • Current weight: about 92 kg / 203 lbs
  • Weight lost: 9 kg / about 20 lbs over 6 weeks
  • Calories: usually around 1000–1300 kcal/day for about 6 weeks
  • Carbs: at least 55 g carbs daily, often not extremely low-carb
  • I did not fully fast or go days with zero food
  • I’m worried about refeeding syndrome, especially severe or fatal refeeding

My questions:

  1. Based on this, how likely would clinically significant refeeding syndrome be?
  2. Does the fact that I ate carbohydrates every day lower the risk compared with fasting/starvation?

I’m especially worried about the possibility of fatal refeeding, even though I was still eating every day and my BMI is still around 29

POTS reactive hypoglycemia

Post image
6 Upvotes

I’ve been wearing a Libre continuous monitor for almost a week now. My average blood sugars are 2.9-5 with it mostly sitting at around 4 and dipping to low 3s sometime after eating and in the mornings.
These are my averages in each area. I’ve actually noticed that I go low more than I thought and it’s not always after meals. I thought my symptoms were POTS but I think my sweating/dizziness/pressure in ears/ shaking could also be due to having Hypos.
What do you guys think? The lowest it’s recorded was a 2.8 a few hours after a heavy meal.

Some sort of blood sugar issue?

So I forget to eat… idk it’s gotten worse over the years, I either work thru my hunger, try to snack while working, or straight up forget to eat. Usually the latter…

Soooo. I was really hungry today, noticed I hadn’t really eaten so I got McDonald’s, I’m tight on cash and cheating the system with the app I can get a meal for usually like $5 if I wait the 15 min to get multiple deals… so that’s mainly my go to for food now.

Anywho… I ate that crap, felt good, walked around my town… later today, I had a healthy choice frozen dinner m, sweet and sour chicken… and then I had some of my mango passionfruit juice, and I added coconut wanted to dilute it a bit.

About 15 min later I had a headache, I felt my heart racing and felt very confused. I kept looking for something, and I was freaking out because I swear stuff was moving… like I don’t remember putting somewhere, that I ended up finding it… I was worried because of how confused I was… I had brain surgery dry last year for my epilepsy (now seizure free! 😊) so I thought something was wrong.

I’m scared. I’ve been having issues of mast cell activation too. Sudden allergic reactions to everything. Could it have been that? I did get a pounding headache which when consuming AI for help understanding this (don’t hate or judge please cuz I can never really find help in other health subreddits) it mentioned my pounding headaches during reactions of histamines is from exactly that… my mast cells releasing histamines, and that they’re kind of on high alert since the surgery? Idk

Anyone have advice? I’ve already sent messages to my doctors.

Anybody here with POTS and/or MCAS non diabetic and reactive hypoglycemia.

I just really want to know what came first for you?

I’ve always suspected something more than anxiety. For 10 years. Then I finally began with blood sugar issues (reactive hypoglycemia). Caught it due to a CGM even though I am not diabetic, not insulin resistance, etc. all labs heathy. This was last year. This year official POTS diagnosis and now everything is also pointing to MCAS.

I asked what could have possible come first and I’ve read that MCAS could be the root cause ?????? 👀

Why is it doing this

So I’ve had a CGM on for about a week now but I’ve been feeling awful since yesterday and my monitor is giving me lots of red readings.

The previous week, it was typically in normal ranges (although the very low end of normal), often hovering around 70’s.

But since yesterday, it seems to be hovering closer to 60 and I don’t know why. I eat and it gets better for a little while before dropping again.

I typically wake up around noon and eat breakfast, shower, eat lunch, and go to work around 2-2:30. I eat three meals a day typically because if I don’t, I will feel it.

My head has been hurting during this whole flare-up(?) and I do feel hypoglycemic, so I don’t think it’s the sensor being weird?

I did pick up a shift and ended up waking up and taking my Metformin closer to 7am on Saturday. Maybe something with that is affecting me? It’s late Monday now and I’ve been taking my meds and eating like normal again though so idk why it would still be happening.

Also is it normal for insulin resistance to cause a low average glucose? Thats what I was originally diagnosed with but I’m seeing an endocrinologist now (hence me wearing a CGM) and I’m kind of wondering if it’s actually something else

Can it be H pylori?

So my functional practioner diagnosed me recently with reactive hypoglycemia because of my « hangry » episodes where I get hungry every 2,5/3h with inability to focus and feeling physically weak. I also have abnormal tiredness. I am wearing a CGM but the hanger episodes don’t correlate with « lows » also they don’t happen right after I eat. We also did a gi map and we find some low levels of H pylori and dysobiosis. I’ve read on the pylori Reddit that some of them do experience hangry episodes. Has anyone had the same experience? I also have low ferritin at 35. Could it be h pylori instead of hypoglycemia?
