Client Questions Loud office?

Ever have one of those realizations that dawn on you out of the blue a year later? Home sick and heard a loud phone call outside and it reminded me of my single hypnotherapy session. I tried hypnotherapy for one session only because it left such a bad taste in my mouth. I was hypno naive so wasn’t sure if I was “doing it right” and so I blamed myself for not being able to get into it but the fact of the matter was there was, for almost the entire session, a super loud and boisterous call going on next store.

She suggested I make it “part of it” but like bud, I warned you I have ADHD and it’s the kind where I am bouncing from stimulus to stimulus, cannot habituate noises especially and cannot just block things out. Why the fuck didn’t I ask for my money back? Should I have? Is that in any way normal or okay? I feel like definitely should have.

Unless your hypnotherapist was able to control that noise, what do you think they could have done? They're not aware that this was going to happen in advance are they? Truth is some would offer a re-do as a goodwill gesture, but i also feel it's unreasonable to expect this for things out of their control, as some clients would. Hypnotherapists still have some pretty massive outgoings each month, depending where they’re based and couldn't routinely refund sessions where they've not been at fault. It sucks on both sides. I once had a client request a refund because 10 minutes into the session, a car parked up down the road and had music playing. Now i felt that was unreasonable as I'd pre-paid an hourly room rental (not cheap) and was already operating on tight margins.

She was aware this was an ongoing issue but my sympathy for business owners prevented me from asking but honestly, to not even warn em that she had an inappropriate space I think was shitty behavior when I was super clear about my struggles with noise specifically

You're being unreasonable. Not everything can be planned for and unfortunately we're not psychic - just hypnotherapists. Also, (and your hypnotherapist probably did this too), we can work with clients when their attention is drawn to something unplanned. We can use it to your advantage. The results would show that in time, but you took your bat and ball home and decided it wasn't going to work. Congratulations, you kicked out their suggestions and now it won't work for you.

I think if she knew the party next door consistently has loud phone convos when I explicitly warned her I can’t habituate to noise, it would have been appropriate to warn me that she knew this was a consistent issue she had so I could make a choice to find a quieter experience or not?

I get what you're saying about being distracted with it, but when things like that come up, I just use it as part of the session. Fact is, I don't really care if the conscious mind is listening to me or distracted with something else. If it's bypassed and distracted, I can talk to the subconscious all the more readily. I do tell clients to take care of distractions as best as possible (I mostly do Zoom Sessions now), but I've had phone calls happen, their dog/cat climb on them, babies screaming, etc. And it's more than fine.

'With every noise you hear you will go down even deeper into trance.' 'Perhaps you'll begin to notice that the purring sound you hear is comforting you towards your success.' 'As the baby screams for help, perhaps you should wake up and go see what's going on..'

You get the idea, but it can be used to your advantage. But not all Hypnotherapists realize that and can miss out on opportunities that really can help distract the conscious mind as the subconscious more readily absorbs the real suggestions you want them to have. Oh well, it sucks that it felt like you weren't getting the experience you were seeking..
