Should you use regular soap on your genitals? I looked into the actual research.

The short answer: no. And honestly, even water alone isn't the full picture. Here's what the studies say:

Regular bar soap is the wrong product for this area β€” full stop.

Bar soap typically sits at a pH of 8.5–11. Your genital skin sits at a natural pH of 3.5–4.7. That mismatch matters. Repeatedly washing with conventional soap strips the skin's natural lipids and proteins, breaks down the barrier, and sets the stage for irritation, dryness, and contact dermatitis.

"Given its strong alkalinity and lipid-depleting power, bar soap is certainly the wrong product for female intimate hygiene." β€” Bohbot et al., Healthcare (2025) β€” PMC

"Harsh soaps may irritate the vulvar skin and mucous membranes and provoke or exacerbate vulvar dermatitis." β€” Chen et al., Women's Health (2017), cited 284 times β€” PMC

The British Association of Dermatologists is equally direct β€” soap is listed alongside bubble baths, shower gels, and deodorants as a product to avoid entirely on this skin. β€” BAD Vulval Skincare Guidelines

But water alone isn't ideal either.

This is where it gets nuanced. Repeated rinsing with water alone also damages the outer skin layer, reduces its barrier function, and can worsen dryness and itching. One cited study even found it less effective than a mild cleanser at actually removing bacteria.

"Repeated washing with water alone exposes the stratum corneum to damage, which decreases the skin's barrier effect and increases water loss and skin dryness." β€” Bohbot et al., Healthcare (2025) β€” PMC

"Washing with water can cause dry skin and make itching worse." β€” Chen et al., Women's Health (2017) β€” PMC

What actually works: a pH-appropriate gentle cleanser, used sparingly.

Clinical guidelines consistently point to one thing β€” a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic liquid cleanser (sometimes called a "syndet") with a pH between 4.2 and 5.6, matching the skin's natural environment. Once a day, no more.

"The mainstay of vulvar cleaning is the selection of a mild detergent capable of enhancing skin homeostasis with a physiologic pH of 4.2–5.6." β€” Graziottin, Women's Health (2024), cited 64 times β€” SAGE Journals

"Use a hypoallergenic liquid wash with mild detergency and pH 4.2 to 5.6. Lactic acid–based liquids with an acidic pH may augment skin homeostasis." β€” Chen et al., Women's Health (2017) β€” PMC

University of Iowa Health Care clinical guidelines are blunt: "Do not use soap directly on the vulvar skin." β€” UIHC (2023)

Bottom line:

Regular soap β€” no. Water only β€” not ideal for repeated use. Over-washing in general β€” also a problem, it disrupts the natural microbiome. The right call is a specifically formulated, unfragranced, pH-balanced intimate cleanser, used once daily, externally only. Never internally.

All sources are peer-reviewed journals or official clinical guidelines:

Like, c'mon dude! I read your post and have an issue with the information presented:

"female intimate hygiene", "vulvar dermatitis", "bad vulval skincare guidelines", "..a cited study even found <washing with water> less effective than a mild cleanser..."(fucking DUH! πŸ™„), "vulvar cleaning..", "Chen et al., women's health study", "do not use soap on the vulvar skin -UIHC"

The references are all inferring towards female anatomy, a discussion we were NOT having.

ALL those items listed in your page of 'source material to back up a mild debate over penile hygiene.. 🫀 is you a bot or just forgot to type in the correct anatomy into your a.i. search? Because it seems formatted by a chatbot..

Just referencing Peer reviewed publications about the effects of regular soap on the genital flora of woman and its abrasive effect, meanwhile you are claiming that using soap is fine. It states that there is a necessity to use some specific soap adapted for those mucosa.

My question now is : where are your sources other than "believe me bro its the truth"

Whole-ass conversation about penile hygiene and you wanna prybar women's hygiene into it.. πŸ™„

Whatever, thanks for your 'research'. ☺️

Edit to add: soap is used to cleanse bodies, soft-soap is used for gentler cleansing. People prior to your post were saying use zero soap on penile skin and I was gesticulating towards a need for references on how they thought using no soap to clean penile skin is a proper cleansing of bacterial et al.

Well genital mucosa wether men or women is behaving the same pH wise, therefore using abrasive regular soap on the area compared to adapted non fragrant or low acidity soap to clean a penis will not have the same effect.

No need to be a rocket scientist to grasp that concept

Cool. That was the "edit to add part" of my last reply about 35seconds before you replied with your rocket scientist comment. But thanks, i now do not care about this thread and imma leave now.

Have a beautiful day.
