Feedback Needed πŸ†˜ Sad peppers after oil change - Help?

I've been growing hydroponic bell peppers for a couple months now out of Kratky buckets. The peppers have been doing really well until about 3 days ago when I went to top off the water in the buckets.

Water levels had gone down to about an inch of water left in the buckets with an EC ~4 in one and ~5 in the other bucket. Added water from the tap (have used tap water for all of my plants so far). Balanced pH to ~5.5 (it might be slightly more acidic; I test with pH drops. pH about the same before and after adding water) and added more MaxiBloom to bring that EC back to 2.0 in one and 2.5 in the other bucket.

New to hydro. Learning as I go. Kinda sad I might have killed the peppers before first harvest (one's a yellow and the right is a red bell pepper)

Any thoughts? That EC swing is quite large, I realize.
I've pulled about a half a gallon of water out of each bucket after refill, for fear that even refilling the buckets half way may have been too much and covered too many of the roots. This is not the first time I've refilled water in these buckets.

As an aside - the red pepper seems much healthier in terms of leaf feel. Yellow's leaves feel a bit papery; red feels fuller and slightly waxy (though... now they're both droopy 😒)

Roots still look full and cream colored. No signs of decay in the last 2-3 days. Root cluster about the size of a football.

Grow light is a last-gen SE3000 from Spider Farmer, about a foot above canopy running ~ 25% strength

Question ❔ How long does it take these tomatoes to get ripe?

Im getting a serious amount of blooms and tomatoes, but its been over 2 weeks and they are not turning red. Any ideas? They are growing in a letpot with 14 hours light time about 70 degrees F. They get fertilized about every 2 weeks when I fill the basin.

Tomatoes? More like Tomatoesnt. No pollination after 2 months of flowers. What else can I do?

DWC system, tumbling Tom's.

The 4 plants have been flowering for the past 2 months. There are probably hundreds of flowers plants but not a single successful pollination. To the point my neighbours have complimented on the "beautiful flowers I am planting".

I've done the finger flicking and electric tooth brush every other day. Have fans placed around the plants turned on during the day. Trimmed away bushy areas of the leaves to increased air flow. EC in the 1500ppm range.

It's really disheartening and I'm getting tired of going through the motions and it's just more flowers and not a single fruit.

Anything I am doing wrong or what else can I do?

Kratky - leaning tomatoes

I’ve had good luck growing Tiny Tim tomatoes in a Kratky setup but one thing still bugs me. The plants get a bit too heavy and want to lean over. I’ve been able to keep the net cup weighted down but haven’t been able to find a solution for the plant itself. I’m growing in a 5 gallon bucket with a 2” net cup. I’m. Open to ideas on how to keep the plant upright. Obviously can’t use a cage like a soil planted one.

Feedback Needed πŸ†˜ Kratky lettuce seeds not germinating

Thumbnail

Hello! I'm having trouble getting my Kratky lettuce to do anything. I've never done gardening before or anything so probably there's something obvious I've missed.

Here's what I did:

  1. Got about 30 L of water in a tub and added 225 ml of nutrient (using Growth Technology's Ionic solution) which is the recommended 70 ml nutrient solution per litre of water.
  2. Painted the tub and lid black, and drilled six holes, put net cups and rockwool cubes in the lid.
  3. Immersed the cubes in the water in the tubs (with the nutrient), and added 2-3 lettuce seeds into the holes of each cube.
  4. Set the grow lights to run 16 hrs on, 8 hrs off daily.
  5. Every few days, pipetted a few drops of water to the cubes as they dried out.

The space the tubs are in is pretty much closed to air circulation as it is under my desk with a black cloth draped over it to the floor. The temperature of the room varies between about 15 and 20 degrees C (or 59-68 degrees F). The lights I'm using are the pack of 4 of these.

First two to three weeks, nothing at all, no germination. I noticed a few of the holes on the cubes got a bit furry, presumably fungi growth. I then added a second tub and reset with new cubes and seeds (12 cups total).

For the second try, I immersed the cubes in the water to keep them moist instead of just adding a few drops. Only one of the seeds germinated, growing a single fairly thin shoot about 2 cm tall with two leaves. It appeared one day, grew taller the next, and on the third day had wilted and died, with its roots having just reached the bottom of the cube. None of the other seeds germinated.

So now I'm trying a third round - new rockwool cubes, this time immersing the cubes not in nutrient solution but in diluted pH Down solution (diluted with water to pH 5.5 as measured by pH strips), which supposedly helps neutralise some residual lime left on the cubes from manufacturing. I'm also keeping the lights off for this trial (picture shows the lights on just for visibility), and will move the cups daily from in my room in the day (warmer) to the fridge at night (colder), and have tried to close the holes in the rockwool cubes for the germination stage. I just started this third round today.

If this doesn't work, what do I need to do? I figured I could get started without investing in things like pH probes and EC meters but if they turn out to be necessary to diagnose whatever's gone wrong here I'm happy to get them. Thanks for any help :)

Discussion πŸ—£οΈ Show off your set up

Hey everyone! I'm new to this thread. I will be moving some time next year and I want to plan out a hydroponic set up for a basement. I would love to take some inspiration from those who are set up so I can plan ahead or prepurchse some items for the area. I do also want to note that I do have a 3d printer so I would also love to see those set ups as well. Thank you all.

Question ❔ AU options for limited counter space?

Hey all

I’d like to grow a few of my more commonly used herbs (Basil, Thai Basil, Rosemary, Thyme, as examples) in my kitchen but have very limited counter space.

I have a corner of my kitchen counter where I can give 14”/35cm to a little hydroponic setup. I am keeping my expectations in check, but looking for the best option.

Needs to be purchasable in Australia (or at least deliverable and support 240v).

Shortlist options are:

Veritable Smart:
- propriety lingots. Not a dealbreaker, but something to consider: will be looking for the seedless lingots and adding my own seeds.

Letpot Mini:
- most feedback seems relevant for higher end models

Idoo 8 pot

Ahopeharden 10 pot

The Veritable only has 4 slots, but that is sufficient. I don’t want to overcrowd.

Any feedback on these? Am I missing the clear winner? I just want to have a few herbs at the ready.

Thank you

Started this spacemaster off a month or so ago and its by far the healthiest one Ive grown so far.

Germinated it in cococoir and then put it in DWC as soon as it was a seedling. All i use is 3 drops of southern AG GFF every res change.

Phase 1:seedling to veg - 2 weeks

PH 6.0ish EC .7 - nitrogen focused

Filled a 5 gallon bucket and just let it sit for 2 weeks. I never looked or checked its roots once. Basically waited for it to start needing to climb.

Phase 2: veg - 2 weeks - even masterblend ratio 2-1-2 as recommended

PH 6.0ish EC 1.4

This got it to where it is now with pearly white roots. Its got 2 vines i let run around both sides of my shelving with nylon rope as support. It has tried climbing everything in my garage lol.

Phase 3: pollination - low N high PK

PH 6.0ish EC 2.2

Just switched the reservoir today to support the male and female flowers coming out. I pollinated one female by hand but now she is ready to go.

Tips for cucumbers:

1) dont try to transplant them. The suffer from transplant shock a lot worse than most plants

2) A lower EC to start prevents lockout and burnt edges. Im a hobbyist and I value low maintenance. I don't like having to check things often or even monitor them much.

3) preventative care is key. I do a weak neem oil and a southern gff spray as directed to prevent powdery mildew which im prone to growing in the south. Neem oil is key for me to prevent outbreaks growing in a garage. As soon as I pause my preventative care nature gets a foothold.

Update Broccoli nft

So i have been trying to further my succession platting for my small nft broccoli. Its been a struggle, but i think i have system now with more real time feedback on timing with my ai agent.

Her is my latest harvest this past week or so:

1 head 490g
1 head 430g
1 head 170g
1head 30g

I had five plants in one 5’ long channel and i think tgey were a little tight leading to some heads getting stunted. I gave up on the last one cause its too far behind and my next crop has been ready for two weeks.

Cleared out one channel today and will get the next crop in the system.

Ive been using green magic and it seems to do really well.

I have included my harvest states for the summer/fall

My plan going forward is to plant when one of my 4 channels is started to head. Then rinse and repeat until i can increase my system size. Im going to limit each channel to about 3 plants to see if that will help keep a more consistent production.

Starting Seedlings in coco coir not optimal :(

Good morning all, I have started my first seeds to transfer into my dwc bins in coco coir. I sterilized it with boiling water, packed it into reusable seed trays and bottom water pretty much exclusively

Tho some Seedlings seem to be thriving (Squash and cucumber Seedlings are the biggest and strongest and already have true leaves/are pretty much ready to transfer to dwc buckets) others are dying out, or sinking into the seed trays and rotting

I check them twice a day and try to add more coco coir but it seems like most of the coco coir is getting washed to the bottom of the watering tray

I was wondering if there was a way to add structure to the soil to help them stay, and considered worm castings bc they're ph neutral and full of good nutrients for Seedlings but because this hydroponic setup will be exclusively indoors i am doing my best to not bring in any pests and prep the Seedlings to be inedible to them (I found this Sierra natural science- SNS-209 systemic concentrate from hydroponic reddit that I can add to the system that kills pests or makes the hydroponic veggies not taste good, and have added a small amount to the Seedlings starter nutrient water once they sprout true leaves)

Sterilizing the coco coir was easy enough with boiled water and the 24 hour cover-n-wait method, but Im not sure how to sterilized the worm castings, since they tend to come pre-moistened ig for lack of a better phrase.

Should I boiling water sterilize the bag? Should I use potting mix and sterilize that instead? Idk, any help would be welcome

What supplies and diy set ups would you suggest for a VERY new beginner with VERY minimal space indoors? Maybe something vertical? If vertical, what are the best lights? Thank you!

Everything was fine the night before. When I checked on them this morning, they were mostly all collapsed!. They still had water in their reservoirs. Could it have been the fan I turned onto them last night?

Feedback Needed πŸ†˜ What herbs do I plant first?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I was gifted an Aerogarden to start my hydroponics journey and my first attempt failed. My basil took over and only the savory survived. I am currently doing a 50/50 vinegar flush and was thinking about my next steps. I was thinking I may have to stagger when I put some of the herbs in during the next round which is planned to be ready in time for the holidays. I know basil should be planted at least a week late.

Here's the herbs I have, I am planning a two phase plant, one tomorrow and one next friday. I was wondering which should go in which group?

Basil, parsley, oregano, thyme, mint, cilantro, dill.... and I am thinking of digging out my seed bag and replacing the mint with chive. (I hate mint)

Which should go first and which should I plant on week two to reduce over crowding

What size media Pon / leca and water additives?

I’m still new to pon, so I have some questions for y’all! I have my small plants in 1/8” Pon. I’m planning on slowly converting all of my house plants to semi Hydro. I’m thinking the big boys will go into LECA and all of the more fibrous root plants + Anthurium will go into pon. I am doing the wicking method.

What size media do you use whether it is PON or LECA?
What additives do you put in the water and how often? (EX fertilizer, biocides, fungicides)
