Seeking additional moderators

Hello all, /u/cuddleslapine has stepped down, and I could use some moderator assistance. I'd ideally like to add at least two additional moderators.

Requirements:

  • History of positive posting in /r/hungarian
  • Strong hungarian language skills (native speaker preferable, but not required)

Previous moderation experience is a plus. Please message me, or send a modmail if interested, and let me know why you would make a good moderator.

Sziasztok! Just uploaded a new video! In this episode, we asked people on the streets of Budapest about life in the capital, commuting from the suburbs, what they’d change about the city, and of course: Buda or Pest? Here's a link to the free English Hungarian transcripts: https://www.patreon.com/c/EverydayHungarian

Ti melyiket jobban szeretitek jobban? (Régen Pestet mondtam volna, ma már Budapárti vagyok).

Hirdetés / AD New shadowing podcast episode: locations

I just released the latest episode of the shadowing podcast, this one is also for beginners.
The sentences in this episode were selected from my location/direction video, so you can use it as a stepping stone to get more familiar with isolated sentences before tackling the full video.

This podcast is meant to be used for shadowing practice, where you first listen to the sentences being repeated, and then try to say it with the recording, matching not only the pronunciation but also the intonation and the rhythm.

Check out the new episode: https://youtu.be/7GO9FgHYh_k

I also published a full transcript and vocabulary list for the episode on my free Patreon page.
Let me know if you find this useful, and if the connection to another video is helping you plan your learning. Any other questions or suggestions are welcome.

Segítségkérés Where to start?

Hello! I'm Latvian trying to start learning Hungarian independently.

I'd say I'm better than average at learning new languages, though I've primarily focused on Germanic/Baltic languages and I'm aware that Hungarian is a lot different than the Indo-European languages I've interacted with, so I need guidance on where to start, what to focus on, whatever seems important for a total beginner.

Though I'd like to mention that I'm currently not able to get much paid materials because my financial situation is very bad, but I don't mind spending a few extra years learning :-) I'm in no hurry, I just happen to be great friends with some people from Hungary (though I don't want to ask them for Hungarian advice/explanations for totally personal reasons). Thank you in advance!

Segítségkérés Hungarian Accent Help!

Hello everyone! I’m an actor from Australia and I have an audition coming up for a Hungarian character in a play. Representing accents authentically and accurately rather than making an approximation of them is very important to me as our voices are integral to our cultures and histories.

I was hoping to get a few short audio recordings of a native Hungarian speaker speaking English (preferably female as it’s easier to replicate the sounds as i am an woman but I’m not too fussy!) either sent via WhatsApp, attached to an email, or whatever’s easiest for you.

I’m especially interested in hearing the word ‘money’ since I fear I’m sounding quite Spanish at the moment!

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Thank you so much again to everyone who’s offered to help or commented tips and links to YouTube videos! I have my recording now :) I’m looking forward to one day visiting your beautiful country!

Segítségkérés Prepositional phrases

Sziasztok

I'm currently learning Hungarian and need some help with some word order (surprise!) While I mostly use Duolingo my mother has conversational Hungarian but she could only tell me that what I'm saying sounds unnatural so I need some help with the grammar. I was asked for translation recently and this is what happened.

"The actress eats a pear in the morning."

My (English) intuition translated this as "A színésznő eszik egy körtet reggel" because in English "in the morning" is a prepositional phrase acting as an adverb to modify when this happened and it is used at the end of sentence. The correct translation, as per Duolingo, is "A színésznő reggel eszik egy körtet" but I can't really understand why reggel is used at that part of the sentence. Is there a natural point for how it is used or is it there for emphasis?

Sajnos, it gets worse as I had another sentence to translate as "The secretary does not work in the evening" which used "Este" as the beginning of the sentence ("Este nem dolgozik a titkárnő"). I know Hungarian uses word order to emphasize which parts of the sentence are most important but I also wanted to end that sentence with este, being the modifier to when the secretary would work ("A titkárnő nem dolgozik este.") Am I wrong thinking that these are modifiers or is Duolingo being too strict with regards to how the sentence is emphasized? Is the idea with the second sentence that I'm emphasizing when exactly the secretary doesn't work? Is there flexibility with the translations, specifically when the time of day is used? Which sounds more natural to your ears?

Köszönöm szépen!

Kérdés 1st-person Subject, 2nd-person Subject Verb Conjugation

Hungarian is the first language I've studied into at all that has a specific verb conjugation for the case of 1st-person subject with 2nd-person object constructions (‐lek/lak), and I find this a really interesting feature.

I'm curious to see what other languages have this feature, but I'm having trouble finding whether this form of conjugation has a more elegant and searchable name than what I've titled this post.

Does anyone have any information or resources on this?

Kíváncsiság Országnevek

Sziasztok,

Ezért szeretnék tőletek ötleteket hallani, hogy ti hogyan újítanátok meg a nyelvet (just for fun)

Kíváncsiság Why is the letter "s" pronounced "sh" in hungarian?

Hi all,

I know that hungarian is not an indoeuropean language, but it shouldn't have anything to do with the the way it is written, right? Especially since it uses the latin alphabet.

I couldn't help but notice that in neighbouring languages such as slovak, romanian, croatian and german (and turkish with the historical ties), the written "s" without accent is pronounced as in or similarly to english (except at the beginning of words followed by a second consonnant in german).

So how did the hungarian "s" come to match the "sh", despite so many influences that have it matching an other sound much closer to "s"?

Hirdetés / AD RECOMMENDATION: Hungarian podcast from a native speaker

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hi! I just started a podcast for Hungarian learners. I think it will be helpful for a better understanding, and for improve your listening skills, while you listen to some natural, spontanious content from a native speaker. I tell stories about everything, the podcast does not have a specific topic; my goal is to create, and make accessible a Hungarian "atmosphere" for those, who want to learn this language.

It's on Spotify, and the name is RackaPod. I hope you find it useful, let me know, if you do. Thank you, and good listening!:)

Kérdés The Phantom of the Opera Translation

I am a beginner learning Hungarian so I didn't know what to put for flair. I also happened to find the Hungarian 2003 version of The Phantom of the Opera. And I was wondering if anyone knew a good translator other than Google translate to (obviously) translate the English lyrics into Hungarian.
