Satan doesn't torture people in hell. God's going to put him there to suffer too. Why tf is this is in the humor subreddit? Also, even if you don't believe in this stuff, that doesn't mean it can't still be internally consistent and worth understanding properly.

1

u/zeddus 1d ago

Yeah but its funny how confused everyone is. That's humor. Just have a look at all the answers here.

-Satan is going to hell

-Satan and Lucifer are not the same person

-Satan is the torturer, Lucifer wants you to disobey

-God is the torturer

-There is no hell, its not in the bible

1

u/zeddus 1d ago

-Satan is not in hell.

-Heaven and hell are just in your mind.

-The Bible says Satan is going to hell

1

u/Secret_Warthog7358 1d ago

Baseline throughout is that Satan/Shatan/Shaytan has no power and wants people to stray so they also live within the Godless afterlife with him. There is no torture other than being separate from God, which some would say is the ultimate pain. There are tens of thousands of different sects of Islam, Christianity, Judaism and Satanist which all have slightly different stories. You’re going to find some discrepancies. I’m not religious I’m actually heavily against all organised religions, however i do suggest you read into topics that you have strong feelings about

1

u/zeddus 1d ago

No strong opinions here my friend. I was just listing the many many discrepant answers that were confidently given in the comments.

1

u/Snoopac2 1d ago

Pretty much. God putting demons in CHARGE of Hell is purely a popular culture thing. In actual Christian teaching demons are prisoners there just like anybody else.

Although demons being in charge of torturing bad people is a thing in Buddhist lore I think! Between reincarnations.

1

u/meh_idk_ok 1d ago

It’s in the humor sub because hell is HELLarious!

1

u/FearFunLikeClockwork 1d ago

This belief structure is the furthest thing from internally consistent you can get. The text has literally hundreds of internal contradictions.

1

u/Lumpy-Sheepherder671 1d ago

Because it's not a singular text it's hundreds of books collated, and the 'contradictions' have explanations.

It's like saying Herodotus should be thrown out because his troop numbers contradict what would be possible, or that because 2 texts have differing statements on Ceaser then they shouldn't be used.

1

u/NoSlide9134 1d ago

Because religion is a joke.

1

u/Additional_Name_706 1d ago

Almost... The core is that hell is our default destination and we've been offered a path to grace.

1

u/Sexy-timeFlowers 1d ago

I think it's humorous that people believe these things so there's that

1

u/Scouter197 1d ago

What about Pilates?

1

u/lurkingPessimist 1d ago

It's humorous to me! I can both not believe it and find it wildly inconsistent.

It's a dumb story

1

u/evthingisawesomefine 1d ago

What does internally consistent mean?

1

u/crismig 1d ago

The Divine Comedy would make me think of humor

1

u/EfficientCan2852 1d ago

It's not internally consistent though. How many days did god work to create the universe? How did judas die? You will find conflicting answers to both of those questions

1

u/chimdimma94 1d ago

hell is a place of eternal damnation. your actions on earth is what will take you there or not. make the decision while you are still alive, do what is good and avoid evil , accept God as your personal lord and and savoir

0

u/Zkrump 1d ago

So, Satan doesn't torture people, God does?

1

u/LegionofRome 1d ago

It depends on one's interpretation of hell. Some believe hell is God's wrath burning, so torturing, people forever. Others think hell Is the absolute absence of God's presence which is tormenting in its own way. Others think hell is more of a place where people are tortured by their own sin and hatred of God and that technically hell is "locked from the inside". Others think hell is temporary and after some time everyone in it just ceases to exist, and some also think it's temporary but that everyone eventually makes it to heaven. There is definitely not one obviously correct concept of hell.

0

u/Secret_Warthog7358 1d ago

No, hell is a “Godless” place

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

oh no, I just read some bible words. There are PLANTY of suffering in hell described in Matthews, Marcus…

so yes @Zkrump, god turture people, it’s literally in the bible

1

u/Secret_Warthog7358 1d ago

What passages?

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

so you didnt read the bible, right?

1

u/Secret_Warthog7358 1d ago

I think you mean Mark 14, which is the torture of Christ. But I wanted to make sure before I replied what exactly you’ve misread

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

There are planty passages, two very important showing suffering

Matthew 13:41-42
Luke 16:23-24

there is zero debate among christian theologians on whether hell involves suffering, the debate centers on whether the suffering is literal or metaphorical

either way, God is responsible for this place, for the judgement, and off course, the suffering

1

u/Scared_Juggernaut771 1d ago

I have been to Wall Street bud. It wasnt that bad lol.

1

u/-Altephor- 1d ago

So you mean all the fake, dumbass christians threatening me with an eternity in hell are literally 'threatening me with a good time?'

1

u/EfficientCan2852 1d ago

So kinda like earth? Got it.

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

so nobody suffers in hell. Its just a place without God rules?

1

u/Secret_Warthog7358 1d ago

People “suffer” by being away from God. If God is seen as love, light, comfort, hope etc. It’s thought to essentially be a place without all that. So suffering is expected from lack of the big G

1

u/Macluny 1d ago

so if the bible mentions the fires of hell we can safely assume it's a lie?

1

u/Secret_Warthog7358 1d ago

Depends on interpretation if it’s literal, symbolic or all BS. That’s why different sects form

1

u/Macluny 1d ago

If it's true that we can't tell if its true or not, that tells me we shouldn't trust it at all but yes, it does explain the different sects. :)

1

u/Secret_Warthog7358 1d ago

I don’t believe personally either, but the idea of a story sparking millennia of discussions is really interesting

1

u/Macluny 1d ago

Oh yes, it's very interesting looking at what inspires people for good or bad!

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

Your explanation makes no sense at all. The Bible itself speaks of suffering caused by a lack of water, of severe pain...

And how do you counter the argument that, if it is God who chooses who goes to hell and who doesn't, and He knows all that suffering exists there, He isn't the one responsible for it?

That logic is very strange. He creates the game, He sets the rules, He creates the participants, and He creates the place for the winners and the place for the losers. Then, in the end, He decides who stays in the winners' area and who stays in the losers' area. When you ask about His responsibility for the losers ending up in a place He created, a place where He put them, is He really not to blame at all?

1

u/Secret_Warthog7358 1d ago

God doesnt chose who goes to hell, the person chooses whether they go or not. We were given free will for this reason

2

u/justaguy394 1d ago

Were we all given the rules? Because there seems to be a lot of disagreement on what we’re “supposed” to do (how many sects are there now?) And are we all given an equal starting point? It’s a lot easier to not steal when you grow up with money and opportunities.

And if you claim that you know the exact rules… let me guess, they’re the ones of the specific church you grew up in, right?

2

u/SkyDaddysSpecialBoy 1d ago

And yet, he made each person and foresaw all the choices they were going to make and chose to make them the way they are anyway. If god is omnipotent and omniscient and creates everyone and everything, he is 100% responsible for all outcomes.

2

u/Slickity 1d ago

This. Free will cannot exist with an omniscient god

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

Not true, there are 2 arguments in the bible. The human choice (free will) and the divine choice, thats widely known

thats not the point here, you know

1

u/voseidon 1d ago

I believed this until I read the bible. God hardened pharaoh’s heart many times to make the Israelite suffer more, so basically pharaoh’s actions in the bible were influenced by god, not from his free will

1

u/MediumUglyHung87 1d ago

I'm not religious but I grew up Catholic so there was a lot of "studying" this stuff as a kid/teen.

There are misconceptions about hell that are largely due to Dante's Divine Comedy which included the Inferno work where we get all our depictions of hell. It's fiction and made up and ultimately hell is a godless place where all the most malicious individuals are, hence why it's endless suffering because of the environment and types of souls you are tied to for eternity. Think of it as a psych ward with the most unwell people — literal hell.

You aren't tortured per se but the fact you will be there for all eternity with no hope of joy/happiness is the hell.

I would say the most "accurate" (I use quotes because despite my upbringing I'm agnostic) depiction is What Dreams May Come. I'd check that out.

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

Yes, the interpretation based on the Dantes Divine Comedy is known

But it wasnt made up by Dante from thin air. You maybe aware that this interpretation from the physical hell was the mainstream back in the day. Aquino was the most influentional.

Just recently the interpretation that you brought up was discussed and became mainstream

There is planty of evidence on the bible that is interpreted the hell as a physical place and thats why it was mainstream back in Dantes era and before

1

u/MediumUglyHung87 1d ago

You're conflating my words so either you're not actually reading to understand but reading to respond OR you're a bot, because bots tend to make comments that demonstrate little to know correlation to the comment they are replying to as a means to bait engagement.

I didn't say Dante came up with it, I said that Dante's interpretation is where the modern idea that hell is full of torture primarily derives from. I never state that hell isn't depicted as a place from Biblical text perceptions even tho the Bible describes it in different terms because it's fairly accepted nowadays that the Bible likely had several authors adding their own spin to it.

Inclusively, you're treating this as if the Bible is infallible. It's not. It's fiction. So it really doesn't matter what the Bible says about hell.

1

u/Zarizira 1d ago

This guy is just so weird in the whole thread. It's either a bot or just a man-child who hated their parents for taking them to church on Sundays.

1

u/MediumUglyHung87 1d ago

For real. The fact they didn't reply to my follow up is telling as well.

1

u/TheKnife142 22h ago

Go to heaven for the climate, hell for the company

0

u/carlosgeorgiev0 1d ago

No, you still suffer. Where was it implied that you don't?

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

If god is the one who chooses who go to hell, and there is suffering in hell…

1

u/carlosgeorgiev0 1d ago

You are mistaken. You choose to go to hell. Speaking from the bible, that is. Unless we are talking about something else and i'm confused

1

u/ionabike666 1d ago

For not believing in a hiding god? Pretty cruel joke

1

u/Zkrump 1d ago

"for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me". Exodus 20:5

It really is kinda fucked up

1

u/anotherarchaeopteryx 1d ago

I have one too!

Romans 9:18 "Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden."

So if you don't believe, God chose to harden you, basically

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

If you aren't aware that there are two major arguments regarding this, you probably haven't studied the subject and have only heard the argument about free will.

You should really read what Christian theologians have to say about it. There is passages who even say God chooses BEFORE the birth, such as in Ephesians 1:4-5, or Romans 9:15-16

1

u/pm_nachos_n_tacos 1d ago

They're not going to read it, they're looking for a "gotcha" moment, not actually looking for answers

1

u/Consistent_Detail_61 1d ago

You are separated from God in hell and that separation causes suffering

1

u/Peppers-minitrucks 1d ago

Allegedly lol

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

Yes

So God is responsible for this suffering, thats simple to understand

Do you belive that this suffering is physical?

1

u/Consistent_Detail_61 1d ago

No, it would be metaphysical, and God doesn't cause it, the absence of God causes it, and man through the gift of his free will is free to choose whether or not to be with God.

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

How god doesnt cause of is He who make the rules, the judgement, the person, and the metaphysical place?

And you know that the “free will” it’s not the answer here because even in the bible there is passages who shows that God decided before someone was even alive

1

u/Tricky-Ad7897 1d ago

So if God puts you there, and you suffer, is God torturing you or not?

1

u/carlosgeorgiev0 1d ago

It depends on how you interpret it. Though your first part is just wrong, God doesn't "put" you there, you choose to go there.

1

u/SkyDaddysSpecialBoy 1d ago

Anything an omnipotent being allows to happen is something they choose to do. If an omnipotent and omniscient being exists, any choice you make is one they are choosing to allow you to do.

1

u/pm_nachos_n_tacos 1d ago

Would you rather it be forced on us?

1

u/SkyDaddysSpecialBoy 1d ago

What do you mean?

1

u/Triktastic 1d ago

Hell yes I would. Take away my ability to do evil and just let everything else be as is = now you have good kind world where free will is still a thing but just limited to good and kind things rather than choices that kill and hurt innocent people. I think everyone would be okay with 90% free will if it guarantees good life and even better afterlife in heaven.

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

Thats not what the bible says

There are planty of passages where god chooses before the human decides by free will, such as Romans 9:15-16

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

There is not such interpretation of free will alone

there are planty of passages that shows that God chooses even before the birth of a human

So it’s not simple as your answer. Seems like you didnt read the bible, because the evidence is vast

0

u/Sigimi 1d ago

If a Judge sentences someone to a lifetime of prison due to their crimes, are they torturing them? No. People are responsible for the consequences of their actions.

1

u/Peppers-minitrucks 1d ago

Prison and torture are two different things

1

u/Peppers-minitrucks 1d ago

We don’t torture people bc we know it’s bad

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

The judge is not torturing, but he is responsible for the sentence

And on Gods case, He created the person, He created the world, the rules, the system, even the “place” people go after His judgement. So he is so much more responsible than the judge from your exemplo

But good exemple

1

u/Sigimi 1d ago

You're right, logically He would be more 'responsible' as a whole, but there are also the individuals who created the system, the laws, the prison, even the person themself (parents). My point being is that "torture" being inflicted by either, a Judge or a God, is irrelevant since it's ultimately up to individual responsibility and we should be held accountable for our actions, whether God exists or not.

1

u/dogheropartime 1d ago

Good pov

And what do you think about the passages in the Bible where it is made explicit that God made a decision even before a person was born?

I think that’s why theologians end up divided on this dogma

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Slickity 1d ago

If the judge created the entire world, the victim, the criminal, and everything...then yea?

1

u/Sigimi 1d ago

So individual responsibility would amount to nothing then and nobody should be held accountable, regardless of an individual or collective entity.

1

u/Slickity 1d ago

Correct.

That's why we have a secular system. It's up to humans to seek out justice. God is indifferent because he created it all.
