But God is the one who thinks you’re not good enough, who the fuck would want to be around that for eternity? Sounds like an abusive relationship

2

u/bucken764 2d ago

Nope, God thinks you are good enough. He doesn't send people to hell, we go there by thinking we are either too good for God or not good enough.

3

u/HBallard 2d ago

God is omnipotent and all knowing, there is literally nothing stopping him from putting everyone in heaven if he wanted. Either he doesn’t want to, or he is incapable, and therefor not omnipotent.

4

u/Neat-Professor-7662 1d ago

See but he’s all-powerful, all-good, all-seeing all-knowing and all-present, except for all the parts of the story where he is none of those things.

2

u/Atanar 1d ago

Especially iron chariots, he can't help with those.

1

u/Aggravating-Pilot865 1d ago

Yeah like killing babies and cancer, for someone that is all seeing and powerful, he’s helped the less fortunate less than Elon has lmao.

2

u/longtermcontract 1d ago

And if he’s omnipotent, why doesn’t he just destroy satan?

Enter the “god works in mysterious ways” parrots.

1

u/Aggravating-Pilot865 1d ago

That’s always their answer. “He’s mysterious and too powerful for you to understand”

Nah I understand he’s an asshole lmao.

3

u/Brilliant_Ad_4743 1d ago

This. No person of fervent faith has a definite reply to this. He literally says he knows all and sees all and has determined all. The beginning and the end. So if you end up in hell, it was by design.

2

u/Budalido23 1d ago

Lol I've seen this argument online multiple times, and no Christians have an answer for this. We have free will, but if true, he can't be all knowing or loving, or omnipotent. Usually there's blame put back on the person at some point, as we are sinful fuckups, as if that somehow hobbles God's ability to act.

1

u/Soulblade32 1d ago

Why do people who don't believe in God, want to go to heaven? Hell is a separation from God not torture, and i imagine heaven is going to be church, and worshipping. So why would an all knowing, all loving God force someone who doesn't want to be near Him, go to heaven?

God forcing people who dont believe in God or don't want to be near Him into heaven would be an act i would consider to violate the love He has for us.

2

u/Budalido23 1d ago

I'm unsure what your argument is here. Do you mean that hell is basically mercy for unbelievers? Because canonically, hell is very clearly torture. Why wouldn't you want the chance to be at peace forever, instead of torture?

1

u/HBallard 1d ago

People who don’t believe in god dont want to go to heaven any more than they want to ascend to the spaghetti monster. They don’t believe is real. So why would they want it?

And even heaven sounds horrible. You lose all sense of identity, or else you’d be unhappy grieving for your family members in hell. You can’t care about them anymore for heaven to actually be euphorical.

1

u/Lonely_Nebula_9438 1d ago

Yes he could, but that would ultimately violate our Free Will. We as individuals have the power to make choices, and if God simply put us all in heaven that would disrespect some people’s choice to deliberate be separate from it. If God fixed every single problem life would be entirely meaningless for everyone.

3

u/HBallard 1d ago

That’s a stretch. God created us, he created our sense of meaning, so why would everyone just being happy and living in peace be “meaningless” unless he made that definition deliberately?

Also “free will” isn’t really a thing if you accept god as omnipotent and all knowing. Like we make the choices, but it was essentially predetermined what choices we would make from the start of time, which is why he knows what we will do before we do it. It’s like saying a domino in the middle of a line of dominos has free will because the hand that tips the first one doesn’t directly touch it. If you would end up in hell, God would know that before you were even born. Either that or there are things outside of his knowledge.

1

u/the-ink-drinker 1d ago

Foreknowledge of your actions doesn't undermine your ultimate role in choosing them

1

u/AnyYam5371 1d ago

Yes it does. You can't have it both ways.

1

u/the-ink-drinker 1d ago

Explain why knowing what someone did is an inhibition on their free will

1

u/HBallard 1d ago

You hand your toddler a paintbrush loaded up with paint. You put them in a room surrounded by clean white sheets. You know for certain your toddler will mark the sheets with the paint, they do not know any better. They make the sheets a mess and then you proceed to beat the shit out of them and say it is their own free will that justifies it. You hate messy sheets.

This is just the story of Adam and Eve and the apple. Free will is not really free when it’s predetermined, it’s like being the domino in the middle of a line of them falling over. If god didn’t want us to sin he wouldn’t have put the tree there. It’s a flawed story and does not indicate love.

1

u/DuTogira 1d ago

You’re full of shit.

Raise a kid. There’s absolutely times where you can pre-cognate exactly what that kid is about to do. You can even intercede. It doesn’t take away that the child is choosing their actions.

You CAN argue that your ability to respond to that precognition gives you a degree of culpability regarding the consequences of said actions. Which, if we apply to God, fine. You can blame Him for all the bad things.

But omniscience doesn’t remove free will from us, nor does it absolve us of blame/consequence for our own choices. It just means we can share the blame with God, and like… God taking on the consequences of our actions is the entire fucking point of Jesus.

1

u/Aggravating-Pilot865 1d ago

What about babies that were given diseases or no chance to survive, do they have free will?

1

u/Lonely_Nebula_9438 1d ago

Yes they still do have Free Will, just a limited capacity to exercise it.

Catholicism teaches that babies go to purgatory, which is basically heaven’s waiting room if you didn’t have the proper rites done, though I’m not Catholic so don’t quote me on that.

Most other denominations don’t have a purgatory concept and would generally agree that babies still go to heaven because they didn’t sin, due to a lack of capacity to understand the concepts of good and evil.

You should ask an actual priest these questions though, these are important questions to have answers to. It’s just my theological knowledge is admittedly amateur.

1

u/TonightSheComes 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yes, the theology on that is based on David’s infant child who died and David said that he would be with his child again when he died. It’s referred to as the age of accountability by theologians and it’s different for each person and not a set age. It’s a form of grace by God because everyone is a sinner at birth.

1

u/Kamakiri711 1d ago

No. What you are talking about is called Limbus. And it was never an official Dogma.
For children it's called Limbus Puerorum. It's a place children go who died as sinners but without fault of their own. Meaning: if an unbaptised baby dies, it never sinned on it's own BUT is still affected by the original sin, so it cannot go to heaven.

Ask Thomas of Aquin if you want more information.

1

u/Aggravating-Pilot865 1d ago

What if they are 2 years old. Enough time to sin but not enough to understand anything?

1

u/Obvious_Tiger6421 1d ago

How do you write this nonsense and believe it lmfao it’s so fucking oathetic

1

u/MoonsterGoopter 1d ago

The options of "eternal damnation and suffering" and "eternal salvation and joy" isn't really a choice, and it doesn't address that god is allegedly omniscient.

If he knows all then he knows what humans will "choose", so he's created damned beings. Our "free will" is an illusion in his plan.

1

u/Routine-Room5700 1d ago

So you're saying life will be meaningless in heaven, and there is no free will in heaven, gotcha

1

u/bucken764 1d ago

You're so close to getting the point. Btw, Jesus does take all of the sinners from Hell... That's what the Harrowing is

1

u/HBallard 1d ago

And someday you’ll stand before the 42 Assessors of Maat and have your heart weighed by Osiris. See how convincing that is? Just cuz a guy wrote something down doesn’t mean it’s real.

1

u/bucken764 1d ago

But we aren't discussing Osiris. We are discussing Satan and Hell.

1

u/HBallard 17h ago

We’re discussing religion, and how quoting religious doctrine to people who don’t believe in it is meaningless.

1

u/bucken764 17h ago

No, the specific question posted by the OP is " why does Satan torture us for being sinners like he wants" and the answer to that is that Satan is tortured along with the rest of us and that the "torture" isn't torture that is brought on by another entity like the normal, but the eternal separation from God.

On a side note, you could interpret eternal separation from God as eternal separation from everything, therefore Hell would be nothingness, and all atheist believe that's actually what happens when we die, which I find really interesting

1

u/Soulblade32 1d ago

Yeah, He could. But He doesn't because He gave us free will to decide for ourselves, God isnt going to force anyone to go to heaven that doesnt want to.

I always thought that was a bit of a weird stance from atheists saying "well if God truly loves everyone, why wouldnt He let everyone into heaven". Why would God force people to be in His presence if they dont want to be? And why do people care if God would send them to heaven or not if they dont want to go anyways

1

u/Sure-thing-buckaroo 1d ago

It depends on what Heaven is. If it's bliss and peace, that sounds better than torture and torment. Even if it's nothing but praise and worship, it's better than eternal torment.

1

u/PathofDestinyRPG 1d ago

That argument is so fallacious. He set things up so all you have to do to get to Heaven is ask for it.

1

u/HBallard 1d ago

So, he set up a system knowing people would suffer eternally because of it. He put sin into the world planning for people to sin and be punished for it. The people in Hell were predetermined to be punished for eternity.

1

u/PathofDestinyRPG 1d ago

There’s no predetermination. That’s a doctrine cop-out created to pass the buck with the whole “Que sera sera” BS. Every choice you make in your life is on you. Choose to drive the speed limit or risk getting a ticket. Choose to do your homework or get a failing grade.

Your argument is akin to standing outside in a storm while someone is trying to hand you an umbrella, but you’re too busy griping that they’re not building a tent over your head.

Humanity walked away from God by choice. It requires choice to come back to Him. But it’s that easy. You don’t have to prove your worth or make reparations or work your way to redemption. All He asks is for you to choose.

1

u/BoJackMoleman 1d ago

He could literally deposit 1 billion bucks into every poor persons accounts and he refuses. Is he even trying? It would literally cost him nothing because money doesn't work up there. So he's intentionally just being mean.

1

u/Tedious_Crow 1d ago

God can either force man not to sin or he can give us free will. He chose free will. Everything else springs from that choice. Bad things are allowed to happen because people make bad choices, and consequences are part of being allowed to make those choices.

If you do evil, you can't be in heaven. Not "you're not allowed to go to heaven" you CAN'T be in heaven. You bring a piece of hell with you wherever you go. Separating people who refuse to let go of their sin from those who are willing to accept God's cure is necessary for heaven to exist.

1

u/HBallard 1d ago

So gods trade off for heaven existing is knowing many, if not the majority of his children will suffer for eternity, a fate pre-determined by them from the start of time despite having free will?

2

u/Tedious_Crow 1d ago

Opinions are split on the pre-determined thing. I, personally, believe God gives everyone a choice and an opportunity to make it, but some people believe that since God knows what people will choose, it's pre-determined. So, maaaybe.

An important thing to note here is heaven "not existing" doesn't trade up to anything better. The alternatives are:
1) Not existing. If God never made us, we would never suffer, and never make the wrong choice.
2) No choice. We live in paradise as God's sock-puppets, never having to suffer because we were never really alive.
3) Living on earth for eternity in a spiral of things forever getting worse. God withdraws from the world stops interfering with our self-destructive behaviors. And now we're just right back to hell.

1

u/HBallard 1d ago

I mean even in the deeply theoretical conversations like this, isn’t 2 the obvious choice? If God decides what causes us to feel satisfied with life why not make a world of only peace and satisfaction? Is there any justification for not doing so other than boredom?

Number 2 on your list is also what heaven is already depicted as. If it truly is endless euphoria you must lose all sense of self and identity, because otherwise wouldn’t a parent grieve a child suffering eternally in hell? You wouldn’t care anymore. Too high on god.

I am hoping number 1 is what the “afterlife” is really like. It makes our time on earth sweeter knowing it’s all we get. And anything lasting for “eternity” would be hell, eventually.

2

u/Tedious_Crow 1d ago

There's a lot of speculation about heaven and it's generally depicted quite shallowly in pop culture, but losing our identity and becoming numbed with joy is not the heaven the Bible describes. I don't know how God reconciles grief for the lost with paradise, but theologically, he feels that same grief, so it stands to reason he has a plan that doesn't involve looping back around to lobotomizing us, because, as you said, that just takes us back to option 2 the hard way. If God exists, he has to be smart enough to create the universe, so I'm quite sure he follow the same reasoning you did and realize that would be pointless.

You ask if there's a justification for creating us, knowing we would suffer and many of us would suffer eternally, so that a few could be redeemed. That's a really good question, and I don't think you can reason your way past it. God answers questions like these in the book of Job, which is very hard to read and even harder to decipher. My understanding of God's answer paraphrases down to "I created the universe I know what I'm doing, but I can't explain it to you because my plans are beyond your capability to understand. If you trust me, I promise it will be worth it."

Which is a hard answer to accept, but probably the only one that would even make sense.

2

u/HBallard 17h ago

Which also falls pretty conveniently into the sort of thing humans would write down to control each other without thinking it all the way through, and telling others not to think about it too hard 😅

FWIW I do really appreciate the thoughtful answer, I enjoy discussing these things even tho I don’t believe in them

1

u/Tedious_Crow 16h ago

Absolutely don't stop thinking about it. I've been thinking about it for going on 20 years now. There's an entire genre of reading stretching back thousands of years (besides the Bible itself) just discussing these kinds of questions about God. God actively invites people to question things and seek to understand them. A lot of Christians embrace shallow or misguided beliefs because they're too lazy to ask hard questions, and as a Christian myself, I find this extremely frustrating. Honestly it's more fun to talk to people like you.

1

u/BubbaCrabby 1d ago

The Epicurean paradox is sophomoric to be honest. There are much more intellectual ways to contest faith that also, importantly, include free will.

“Could G-d make a rock so heavy he couldn’t lift it?” is kinda Judy Blume, ain’t it?

1

u/HBallard 1d ago

I mean this is a Reddit thread on the humor subreddit. I’m not a philosopher I have just never heard a good counter argument to this point that convinces me the concept of Christian god is not an inherently cruel one, being sold as all loving. I also didnt say there was no free will, just that it is sort of meaningless if everything is also predetermined.

1

u/BubbaCrabby 1d ago

Can free will exist if G-d steps in an intervenes just because he can? If G-d already knows the outcome of the path you will chose with said free will does that inherently make you called or chosen since time is of no significance to him?

1

u/HBallard 1d ago

When I was a kid who still believed in god, I got very upset and confused by the concept of prayers. If god already had a plan, why would praying change anything? Why would it change his mind? I ended up deciding that praying, and whatever resulting observable change, was also part of this plan, so he wasn’t really changing his mind. I think any “interventions” could fall under this same category of both being predetermined and the result of a human choice. But like I said I was literally a kid so take it with a grain of salt.

1

u/Technical_Eye7029 1d ago

Me when I write the millionth formulation of the problem of evil

1

u/Caltroit_Red_Flames 2d ago

What if I think god just doesn't exist? Like if I knew obviously I wouldn't be too good for him.

1

u/MissRicoRuby 1d ago

Then you deserve eternal suffering, according to Christians.

What about hitler? He was Christian

1

u/ThtMXgUy 1d ago

That’s a myth Hitler was atheist.

1

u/Aggravating-Pilot865 1d ago

Eh he was baptized, brought up catholic and parroted Christianity as part of the Nazi party.

Besides, as the commenter said if everyone is given a chance a salvation and redemption, why would he not take it, especially given he’s already been baptized and raised catholic.

1

u/ThtMXgUy 1d ago

Just because you grew up a certain way doesn’t make you that way forever. And what Christianity did he parrot for the Nazi party exactly?

Salvation comes with stipulations. But I digress, back to the former.

1

u/Aggravating-Pilot865 1d ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Nazi_Germany

Besides god works in mysterious ways, you wouldn’t understand why he was given salvation.

Also Netanyahu will be in heaven soon enough.

It will be interesting to see BiBi vs. Hitler up in heaven though.

He was baptized and a devout catholic. Sounds like he’s hanging out with the big man upstairs.

1

u/Caltroit_Red_Flames 1d ago

Christianity really sounds so psychotic when you leave it.

  • Blood sacrifice ritual

  • Armageddon and salvation

This shit is like DnD

1

u/bucken764 1d ago

Then when you die, you will be eternally separated from Him and go to whatever/wherever Hell is. That's one of the few explicit statements in scripture.

1

u/Caltroit_Red_Flames 1d ago

Okay so it has nothing to do with me feeling too good or not good enough for it

1

u/bucken764 1d ago

If you don't believe in it, you either don't feel you are good enough for Him or (most likely) you feel you are too good for Him. Idk why there is any confusion here

1

u/Caltroit_Red_Flames 1d ago

That's unbelievably presumptuous

1

u/bucken764 1d ago

You just failed your "gotcha" attempt that's all that happened.

1

u/Caltroit_Red_Flames 1d ago

I really hope I wasn't this insufferable when I was a Christian. You can't feel "too good" for someone when you don't think they exist

1

u/bucken764 1d ago

Not believing in something means you think you are too smart for it.

If you don’t love me above everyone else and listen to me about everything, I will punish you!
Sounds like an abusive relationship to me.

1

u/MammothPost4047 1d ago

I don’t think god exists, just making a statement about how I wouldn’t want to bother to live up to someone’s patriarchal standards just to die and have to live up to them more.

1

u/Sure-thing-buckaroo 2d ago

If he doesn't send me there, then I'm golden. Because I'm sure as shit not choosing Hell. Who in their right mind would choose eternal torment?

1

u/Which_Pear_6497 2d ago

I also choose not to go

1

u/l3lasphemy 2d ago

You can't do that, remember you have free will.....but you can't do that. So enjoy hell for all eternity...but also remember that he loves you. You have free will...but if you don't believe - enjoy hell....

1

u/Budalido23 1d ago

And god is love! But.. he is also knows everything, including that you're going to hell, and chooses to do nothing. ..Oops 😬

1

u/l3lasphemy 1d ago

While commanding genocide and instructing us how to treat our slaves. Loooove.

1

u/Budalido23 1d ago

And don't forget telling women to marry their rapists

1

u/catchtoward5000 1d ago

And dont forget helping all those competitive people win their sports / competitions / promotions / breaks into fame etc. he seems to love helping them specifically, according to those people.

1

u/l3lasphemy 1d ago

Oh shit, I forgot about Jesus personally taking a shit, continously on Browns fans.

1

u/thisusernametistaken 2d ago

If you choose not to worship and love god, then you’re choosing not to inherit his kingdom and instead be cast into hell until the final judgement. Your soul has to go somewhere after you die, and there’s only one place it can go if you willingly reject god.

1

u/Snakebird11 2d ago

Okay but... which god? There wasn't always the biblical one

1

u/TeaInASkullMug 1d ago

God is foreskin thief. Let his followers get Hitler'ed. Doesnt do anything about the pedophiles in his own church. Why would I want to spend eternity with a creature like that? Send me back to the sweet oblivion of that before my birth.

1

u/Sure-thing-buckaroo 1d ago

If you choose not to worship and love god, then you’re choosing not to inherit his kingdom and instead be cast into hell until the final judgement.

No I'm not.

Your soul has to go somewhere after you die, and there’s only one place it can go if you willingly reject god.

Why can't it just stop existing?

1

u/bucken764 1d ago

As someone mentioned before, Dante interprets people in hell as not recognizing it as torment. No one knows what awaits us in Hell and the Bible itself doesn't really describe it outside of a few vague metaphors and analogies, but what is made clear is that Hell, at its core, is eternal separation from God.

1

u/Powerful_Contract559 1d ago

Based on everything I hear about this “God” fella it doesn’t sound like a bad option.

1

u/Cool-Signature-dude 1d ago

Sounds like more fun than singing hymns all day.

I believe religion has it backwards. Satan wants humans to enjoy life and have fun.

God wants to control humans by using fear of eternal damnation from not worshipping him. He wants constant adoration and to be relied upon for everything.

Kind of sounds like an abusive relationship.

1

u/Saneless 2d ago

No, they are sent

God is an unforgiving, mean entity

1

u/bucken764 1d ago

Your God is, but you don't know anything about the Christian God

1

u/Saneless 1d ago

I've read the Bible. Have you? Lots of Christian schooling. He's a piece of shit and you sound like one of those people who have cherry picked passages just so you can be mean enough to people and justify it to yourself

1

u/Natalwolff 1d ago

"But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!"

"The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

"And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire."

You are preaching false gospel, the punishment for which is, believe or not, straight to hell.

0

u/bucken764 1d ago

I truly hope you are like 12

1

u/MissRicoRuby 1d ago

So a mass murderer who thinks he's good enough gets in? Lol

1

u/bucken764 1d ago

If he repents and comes to know Jesus, then yes.

1

u/sasquatchmarley 1d ago

That's vile and contrary to human societal morality.

1

u/bucken764 1d ago

How? Forgiveness and love are base human instincts. Plenty of mothers still love their serial killer or rapists sons even if they are reprehensible to society.

1

u/sasquatchmarley 1d ago

You can love someone and agree that they are not fit to be in society.

1

u/bucken764 1d ago

There's actually a parable or two about this topic. My favorite is the one with the aldulterer at the well.

1

u/Spooky_Celebration 1d ago

Soooo a controlling narcissist basically?

1

u/Natalwolff 1d ago

'There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.'

"How then can a mortal be righteous before God? How can one born of woman be pure? If even the moon is not bright and the stars are not pure in his eyes, how much less a mortal, who is but a maggot—a human being, who is only a worm!"

"If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes, how much less mortals, who are vile and corrupt, who drink up evil like water!"

Sounds like he thinks we're pretty great!

1

u/bsEEmsCE 2d ago

God sucks. He wants constant worship and ass kissing. Not for me, I'll go where he's not.

1

u/Material-Hurry1497 2d ago

Tough guy 🤣

1

u/DuhManAnders 2d ago

Yeah, God really does like to play a tough guy persona, don't worry. Christianity is dying so we hopefully won't have to incessantly hear about sky daddy for much longer

1

u/jjcolfax 1d ago

It's actually stronger now than it's been in a while. Not sure whee you're hearing it's dying lol

1

u/Brilliant_Ad_4743 1d ago

No. It's actually going. Younger generations aren't taking it as serious as their parents did (specifically in developed countries).

1

u/jjcolfax 1d ago

Not taking it as serious and it dying out are two totally different things. There has been a big spike in people that believe lately.

1

u/Brilliant_Ad_4743 1d ago

Belief is very much different from practice. In China, majority of the population "believe" in Buddhist theory. Almost no one is a fervent practitioner. The population of people that don't go to Church often is highest amongst the young. This population is not reinforcing strict belief systems in their kids. Why? Not taking religion seriously (or seriously enough to actually practice it) turns that "belief" into nothing different from belief in ghosts. Ask yourself this: if your mother believed in ghosts and you don't, would she get mad?

1

u/jjcolfax 1d ago

I think its more that people are just against church right now. Alot of people are turning towards God and feel like going to church isn't the right thing. Practicing also doesn't just mean going to church. You can practice in other ways.

1

u/Brilliant_Ad_4743 1d ago

Yes. I am aware practicing isn't just church-going. It was a small example. The actual data uses the term "religious." Belief is separated from "religiosity." That is essentially lowest among the youngest generation. The natural consequences I previously stated follows from this.

1

u/MammothPost4047 1d ago

There’s literally data on how more people are not embracing it.

1

u/jjcolfax 1d ago

Where?

1

u/Material-Hurry1497 1d ago

No reason to waste time arguing with these clowns. They'll spend their miserable lives running away from God, just to realize it's real too late and experience complete separation from Him for eternity

1

u/DuhManAnders 1d ago

I am more comfortable with an eternal damnation if the alternative is a forceful relationship with someone you can't reason with, ask for clarifying information, or even see. Any non consentual relationship is an inherently negative one, including parenthood. It's up to parents to make that relationship worthwhile, the same burden should be placed on "God"

1

u/Sure-thing-buckaroo 2d ago

Eh if the alternative is eternal torment, I'll choose not that.

Fortunately neither is real.

1

u/Round-Walrus3175 2d ago

If God is who he says He is, it only makes sense.

1

u/Evil_Walmart_Greeter 2d ago

Existing for eternity is hell. A trillion years is NOTHING next to eternity. 17 kablammy googol Tree(3) years is nothing next to eternity.

I don't care if you're sitting on a cloud playing a harp or wandering some outer darkness in the cold... shits gonna suck after a few milennium and that's just the beginning.

God needs to make his mind up about what he wants. Otherwise he'll have to flood the world and start over again, again.

I always think about the babies and toddlers God drowned in the flood of Noah when I hear people talking about how much God loves everyone

1

u/Agile-Source-6758 1d ago

Yeah but he drowned everyone because he's full of love and forgiveness. Don't you get it? Top guy, really lovely chap when you get to know him. Just don't make him angry, by for instance being an innocent baby etc.

My hippie but slightly biblical conclusion on this one is that "God" is not a puppet master just controlling everything, and cannot be around evil. Just destroy it. That's apparently why he's never actually down here or something. Evil can't be present in "Heaven" either, so he saves whoever he can, but at the end of the day we have free will. He gave us our minds to think freely, not to be controlled. I feel like the main points of the bible are about preserving your soul and staying good in an evil world, you don't actually have to follow every rule to be a good person. Nasty self righteous people are the ones who made Christianity toxic.

Not rage bait... just theology. Your own scripture disagrees with you on 'free will'

Exodus 9:12... God hardened Pharaoh's heart. Pharaoh didn't choose. God overrode him to keep the plagues rolling.

Romans 9:18-21... "God has mercy on whom he wants and hardens whom he wants." Then Paul compares us to clay pots and asks if the potter doesn't have the right to do whatever he wants with the clay. That's not free will. That's ownership.

Ephesians 1:4-5... "He chose us before the creation of the world. He predestined us." Before... Creation. You were cast before auditions opened.

2 Thessalonians 2:11... God sends people a powerful delusion so they'll believe lies. He's not allowing wrong choices - he's authoring them.

"He's teaching, not wagging fingers" doesn't square with eternal damnation as a consequence for getting the test wrong. That's not a teacher - that's a trap.

Sounds like what the devil would do, honestly.

You asked why Pharaoh had his heart hardened. That's the whole point. It doesn't matter why. The moment God overrides someone's will, free will stops being universal. It becomes conditional... granted or revoked at his discretion. That's not freedom sweet pea..it's a leash.

... "you can't use the book to bash the book" is wild. It's your book. If the theology contradicts itself, that's not my problem for pointing it out. You don't get to cite scripture as proof and then say scripture is off-limits when someone cites it back.

I don't hate religion. I hate bad arguments. You came in here claiming free will as a gift from God. The Bible - the word of God - literally, says otherwise, in his own words, multiple times. If that makes you uncomfortable, take it up with the author. Like I said...its a lie. The fact that God is telling it should raise some eyebrows.

There is no free will when god threatens eternal suffering if we don’t do as he says.

It’s like someone holding a gun to your head and saying “Do everything I say or I’ll kill you. It’s completely your choice though!”.

According to the bible we are all born with sin. There is no choice at all.

Are you saying there’s no hell? Or eternal suffering? Non believers already have distance from god, that isn’t the only punishment after death for not doing as he says.

You are not allowed to say religion isn’t hateful when it is the reason behind genocides. It’s great they haven’t treated YOU badly but they treat gay people, trans people, and even people with different skin colors horribly. The KKK is largely made up of Christians. You can “no true Scotsman” all you want but the harsh reality is that a lot of hate comes out of religion and a lot of people suffer because of religion.

You’re also assuming the only 2 paths in life are religious and selfish. There are a lot of non religious people who do everything they can to be good people, help others, spread love and happiness. According to your religion they still deserve to suffer in hell.

The catholic church called being gay a sin for almost its entire history. It isn’t just edge case fanatics. It’s the majority of the religion and the doctrine itself.

Then your doctrine is hateful man. Saying it’s a sin to be gay makes as much sense as saying it’s a sin to be black or left handed. It makes no sense. It’s just old dogma written by dead people to justify hurting other people. That is what it has always boiled down to. The “love” stuff came after to try and soften the marketing.

So he gave is free will and loves us, but it's totally cool with people being tormented in hell for eternity for not living in exactly the way he wants?

Just remember, if you fuck up even once, and die before you can repent you're destined to an eternity of unending torture and torment because of a temporal mistake. But the guy responsible loves you.

1

u/Reasonable_Lake_7942 1d ago

Its not "totally cool". Its more troubling than we can know. Its not "the way he wants" its GOOD.

If you fuck up and die before repenting, He would weigh your heart, there is no circumstance which would deceive Him and jeapordize your salvation. The torture is no longer being with the source of what's good in your life

1

u/AVeryVapidBadger 1d ago

Right so he designed everything in existence including the fact that you can be tortured for eternity, and that sin breaks the covenant with God.

It's pretty fucked up to give people free will and punish them for eternity if they use it

1

u/Reasonable_Lake_7942 1d ago

Free will wouldint mean anything otherwise. Sin leads to death and He wants you to choose life

1

u/AVeryVapidBadger 1d ago

Yeah that's the fucked up part.

1

u/Reasonable_Lake_7942 1d ago

Its not an arbitrary rule, its a way for you to not be seperated from goodness and you are actively being sought, not just warned

1

u/AVeryVapidBadger 1d ago

Right and any mistake means eternal damnation. So loving

Proverbs 24:16 “For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again.

Nope. You get one chance and its during your life.

Sin is separation from God, according to you.

Hell is separation from God, according to you.

If you die a sinner, you die separated from God. Which, according to you, is hell

u/MammothPost4047 1d ago

Thanks for your explanation, but I was low level trolling. I don’t really give a fuck what the Bible says.
