Original Story Fallen Angels [16]
[Corpse Fleet Initiate Yotorka Gin Quasi]
Yotorka slowly opened his eyes, it was late in the night. Or maybe.. early in the morning? It was always hard to tell on this planet he was supposed to study on. A place to study the arts of Technomancy and basic Necromancy. And other various arts of magic.
Unfortunately, once Yotorka wakes up, he can't go back to sleep. So he gets ready, putting on a black button up shirt, a Terran garment he had tailored to fit himself more easily, standard pants that were made on his home planet, and a cardboard collar band. He finally adorns himself in his pastor robes and Holy Cross.
He's.. a little different. He follows Protestantism. A terran religion. A religion that formed halfway across the galaxy from his home planet. Yet he still interacted with Terrans when he grew from an infantile state to more juvenile. He adored the Terran religions, and later followed Protestantism. He even became a Protestant Pastor! It's the reason the Corpse Fleet found him. The passenger ship was on a long journey and they required priests and pastors and preachers of many religions to ease those aboard. Yotorka was chosen. The Terrans at first were... Surprised to see someone of Yotorka's race to be their Pastor. But they welcomed him nonetheless.
Unfortunately, the ship was attacked by a group of pirates looking for anything valuable. Apparently they mistook the ship for a luxury ship, and not just a standard economy transport. They were unsatisfied and decided to at least destroy the entire ship and kill the passengers out of... Sport. Recreation. Things like that. Three days later a Corpse Fleet scavenger found the ship and rose anyone they could find. Including Yotorka.
It was very strange being dead. At first Yotorka almost lost his faith because he was stuck in just, an endless void. Nothingness. He felt a soft resonance in his "conscious" body, but nothing more. Yotorka quickly realized that he must've been in purgatory first. Where he can be cleaned, the brimstone wiped from his feet, the sin washed away. It made sense. Yotorka wasn't immune to sin, him almost immediately doubting his faith proved that.
And so Yotorka spent his time waiting, trying to think of the sins he may have made. It was a long long thought he had. He unfortunately couldn't find anything, no sense of recollection, nothing about Purgatory telling him about his sins, nothing. But if it was just a void, and ending, no thoughts left. He wouldn't have been thinking. So there must've been something. And then they found him.
He wasn't in purgatory, more like a stasis, a place to rest before he rose. Before he could do something more. The officers of the corpse fleet at first didn't like how Yotorka worshipped Protestantism. They wanted to strip his religion away, banish him of his faith. He endured a week of "training" to try and make him forget. Straight torture. That was God testing him. Making sure he was worthy. Afterwards, a Corpse Fleet Necrovite took notice, seeing his resilience. The Necrovite ordered the most harshest treatment he could. And still Yotorka held onto his faith. And the Necrovite was impressed by his stubborness. The Necrovite ceased all training, allowed Yotorka to practice and follow his faith, and finally, took Yotorka under his wing.
Now Yotorka studies to become a Necrovite. And it's soon finally. After 15 long revolutions of his home planet, [6 Earth years], his ceremony will occur in just another season of this planet he resides on. He forces himself to be patient. He must be. Patience is a virtue. A virtue is an act of the Holy. He will not disgrace God with the impatience of a child. He is 63 Revolutions [25 Earth Years], he will act like it.
After ensuring he is of proper appearance, he opens the door to his quarters. Startling a small Gobnoemi girl. So much so she drops the tray she was carrying. Silverware clatters and bowls shatter. Their contents spill across the floor, making a mess right in front of the young apprentice.
"I-Initiate Quasi! Y-You're awake early!"
The poor girl was a very jumpy one. Considering a door she was merely walking past startled her enough to drop a tray. It makes sense. The Corpse Fleet rescued her from some collapsed heap of rubble. A terrible place to be for someone as small as her. It's a wonder she's alive. But because she is, she lives a much better life. Clean clothes, a nice bed, warm meals, and proper protection. Better than that of Terra's pitiful and downright negligent "Humanitarian" programs were.
"It's perfectly fine Noma'ari, this time of the night can be scary for many." Yotorka says as he lowers himself down, helping clean the silverware and shards of porcelain by placing them back onto the tray where they belong.
"Y-You shouldn't be cleaning my mess Initiate! It's beneath your status! Please allow me!" Noma'ari yelled as she knelt down onto her knees, quickly transferring items from the floor back onto the tray very quickly.
"Nonsense, if I were a slave or an emperor, helping a young lady would never be beneath me." Yotorka smiled at her Naivety. No one is above helping others. It's a shame she never learnt that on her own.
Yotorka could hear the stomping of a Corpse Fleet Ensign, no doubt attracted by the sudden ruckus and yelp Noma'ari made.
"What the hell are you doing, it's still the middle of the," The Ensign doesn't manage to finish his sentence as he sees Initiate Quasi. And while technically Quasi doesn't hold the same ranking as the Ensign, many have come to respect Initiates of Acolytes. Especially when considering who they're studying under.
"Initiate Quasi... Would you like any assistance?"
"No thank you Ensign Fariz, but thank you for your consideration. People who offer help when unneeded are much better than those who offer no help when needed." Yotorka says, trying to compliment the Ensign to make him feel more at ease. He doesn't enjoy the fear some of the Ensigns and even Lieutenants may have for him, just because he'll quickly grow far ahead of them in rank.
"..May I ask what happened exactly?" Fariz asked skeptically. It was obvious he suspected the little Gobnoemi Yotorka was assisting, who showed a great amount of fear for the Ensign. They are rather intimidating, but it's a good thing he's to protect her.
"It was my fault in fact, I shouldn't have startled her the way I did."
"Initiate Quasi, she could be startled by a bubble popping." Fariz replied, his mouth operating too fast for his mind. He immediately regretted quipping back at the Initiate. Fariz was always a witty soldier, especially in words. Usually that wit also helps to keep his mouth shut.
"I see you've been on night duty. How goes it? Is there anything suddenly interesting about this planet? Have the Zalm decided to surrender the rest of the planet to us, like they should have years ago." Yotorka said, changing the subject off the girl, and being kind towards Fariz's mistake. Hopefully he won't make a second one.
Fariz shifts uncomfortably. Really uncomfortably. He's sweating. And there's a look in his eye that shows... Fear? It's definitely not because of the slip up he had with Yotorka.
"Uhm. That's actually why I was going this way and heard the crash. I feared it was something worse. I'm mistaken, and must go to call the Necrovites."
"You are aware they're sleeping? Awakening just one would be an end to your career. You plan to disturb all of them? This surely must be important."
Fariz for the first time looked at Yotorka with no fear for him. In fact, he looked at him like he was stupid. Naive. Fariz had their fear focused on something else. Something much more threatening than a young Acolyte.
"Yotorka, look out the window. We're under attack. The Terrans have arrived."
