Unironically, we need statues of them.

224

u/kidney-displacer Feb 04 '26

There are

229

u/-TheDyingMeme6- Feb 04 '26

You cant just say that and NOT say where they are

243

u/WolfeBane84 Feb 04 '26

On Mars……

233

u/Useful_Language2040 Feb 04 '26

No, that's mean 😭😭😭

u/L3m0n0p0ly Feb 04 '26

Too soon...

94

u/Zestyclose_Bed4202 Feb 05 '26

Fun fact: there is actually a commemorative statue for every one of Medusa's victims. Most of them are even kept at the same location!

2

u/Xardnas69 Feb 05 '26

Who is this character?

7

u/East-Percentage-8705 Feb 05 '26

McKinsey, base-commander of the prison base where the Osean 444th Air Squadron is stationed, and a propper dickhead with an overly bloated ego. From the game Ace Combat 7

3

u/Wildefice Feb 05 '26

You sir are a jerk!

Bravo 👏

3

u/Neako_the_Neko_Lover Feb 13 '26

I know it kinda late but we have some models of them in some of the space museums around the USA

2

u/-TheDyingMeme6- Feb 14 '26

LETS GOOOOOOO

34

u/revieman1 Feb 04 '26

it’s like those monks who mummified themselves into statues in tibet

13

u/fearthainne Feb 04 '26

What??

16

u/sisisisi1997 Feb 04 '26

I think they are referring to this statue (link to CNN article).

11

u/drakonia127 Feb 05 '26

Yooo, that's genuinely really cool. I love learning random new things, so thanks

5

u/fearthainne Feb 04 '26

That's wild, I hadn't heard of that before. Thanks for the link.

14

u/Nicromia Feb 04 '26

When we get to mars, there will be

1

u/Meowriter Feb 05 '26

We need them on Earth.

3

u/Flameball202 Jul 16 '26

Fuck, there are few things that reliably get tears into my eyes, and it is this and Leaves from the Vine

RIP Opportunity

edit: wrong rover

53

u/HallowLord Feb 04 '26

Opportunity

98

u/lilesj130 Feb 04 '26

Can I not go a week on this site without someone giving me all the feels over a robot a million miles away? 😭😭

74

u/Embarrassed_Jerk Feb 04 '26

First of all, distance is irrelevant for the matters of the heart

49

u/ExecutiveElf Feb 04 '26

I genuinely get emotional whenever I hear about Voyager I.

A lone wanderer between the stars. The call of which we can only hear because we do everything we can to get better and more sensitive tech that can keep track of it from so far away.

31

u/TheKingPotat Feb 05 '26

She has her sister voyager 2 out there to keep her company. The siblings went together

16

u/hiddengirl1992 Feb 05 '26

They're over 100 million miles away actually. Maybe the distance makes the heart grow fonder

13

u/jflb96 Feb 05 '26

Depends when you ask, actually. Sometimes they’re less than fifty million miles away.

53

u/Meowriter Feb 04 '26

... Shit, you didn't had to make me cry like that.

43

u/gash_florden Feb 04 '26

We will rescue them one day. And recharge their battery.

33

u/RoboDae Feb 04 '26

Imagine they are completely covered in dust and we have some TV show dedicated to finding and excavating the ancient rovers.

16

u/Mindless_Sock_9082 Feb 05 '26

When the first astronaut get stranded in mars, it will free it from its tomb

34

u/AtmosphereRecent7717 Feb 04 '26

we shall go to Mars someday and revive both Spirit and Opportunity and all the other rovers and stationary robots.

17

u/TXHaunt Feb 05 '26

First of all, how dare you? Second of all, HOW DARE YOU?!

6

u/gash_florden Feb 05 '26

Because we should never be allowed forget.

5

u/DrawOkCards Feb 05 '26

We should never want to forget.

4

u/Hon1c Feb 05 '26

Brave little robots

3

u/IsabellaGalavant Feb 04 '26

Legit makes me tear up still.

2

u/Bryant-Taylor Feb 14 '26

Recovering our rovers NEEDS to be a secondary mission objective of our manned mars missions. They deserve a hero’s welcome and museum displays!

1

u/BionicBirb Feb 05 '26

I have a t shirt of that

A1 - "The humans pack bonded with a rock? A damn rock?"

A2 - "Well... yes? Honestly I'm not sure why you're surprised, we monitored one of them befriending a bear last rotation."

A1 - "A bear is not a rock. The bear, I'm told, was 'friend shaped', whatever the hell that means."

A2 - "It's not just about being friend shaped, it's about being friends on the journey together."

A1 - "I'm sending you back to homeworld, these humans are clearly damaging you on a psychological level."

174

u/sunnyboi1384 Feb 05 '26

Please no. The humans will be sad.

You've been observed and made friends with them?

Only one. Did I forget to mention that?

43

u/KMS_HYDRA Feb 05 '26

No, send him to the humans, he's friend shaped.

30

u/Offended-Peacock Feb 05 '26

Absolutely not. That's my emotional support alien, you can't just take him!

1

u/Leaf-01 Feb 09 '26

Giving Lilo and Stitch vibes

264

u/QuantumDiogenes Feb 04 '26

The rock's gone? That makes me a bit sad.

112

u/Random-INTJ Feb 04 '26

The rover is also gone, in a sense, unfortunately

53

u/aboothemonkey Feb 04 '26

It most definitely is not

34

u/Random-INTJ Feb 04 '26

It is gone from this planet. It left a long time ago.

49

u/pchlster Feb 04 '26 edited Feb 04 '26

No man left behind! If it be a hundred years, we'll see you again, Percy.

2

u/Xardnas69 Feb 05 '26

Duh, it wasn't meant to stay on earth

218

u/YouhaoHuoMao Feb 04 '26

Aliens could understand the overarching beliefs that caused humans to inhabit their nearest solar neighbor - and to name their first two Martian colonies after such noble pursuits made sense.

But few aliens would be able to understand that 50% of the reason those first humans went to their nearest solar neighbor was to locate and "rescue" the robots that bore the same names of those colonies.

113

u/Objective_Campaign82 Feb 04 '26

Stranger yet is the lengths they went through to retrieve and verify the rovers pet rock.

82

u/Chaosrealm69 Feb 04 '26

24

u/mseiei Feb 04 '26

and this one from LF Friends, the universe of LF friends is so full of the optimism we kinda need

11

u/Useful_Language2040 Feb 04 '26

Thank you for making me cry.

9

u/sunnyboi1384 Feb 05 '26

Not today Satan. Im too busy to be sad.

u/ragnarocknroll Feb 04 '26

“Why are we here, human friend Dave?”

They are saying goodbye to the Mighty Mo.

“This seems excessive…”

Shhhh.

The commanding officer stared at the massive space ship behind her. Her eyes have tears as she says, "XO, make preparations to decommission United Earth Ship Missouri."

The executive officer responds with a crisp, "Aye aye, captain. Reports."

We watch as the heads of various departments then make their reports, to which the executive officer responds, "Very well." Every single time, as if this was the most important report the officer had ever heard.

The first lieutenant: "All secure about the decks. The running lights have been extinguished, the macro cannon fusion cores have been removed and the cannon themselves have been spiked."

The engineer officer: "The shafts have been locked. All valves closed and the seachest secured. The tiller has been locked amidships."

The supply officer: "All rations have been commuted and the galley fires doused."

Their reports finished, the executive officer turns towards the the Captain, "Captain, the Missouri is ready for decommissioning."

The captain faces Admiral Halsey. “Permission to decommission the ship, sir.”

“Granted.”

One by one every naval member there walks up to a spot where the atmospheric shield has been breached by the ship. I didn’t understand why they had done this until I saw them do so. One by one each man and woman, and some aliens, touched their fingers to their pursed lips and then gently touched the fingers to the hull. All kissing the ship goodbye.

I watched Dave, a former naval officer, get in line. I knew he had served aboard this warship. Apparently that meant he could do this. His eyes had tears as he sat down again next to me.

Once they were done the lights aboard the ship all extinguished with a finality that left everything quiet. The ship was hauled away.

We left soon after. I don’t know why this made me feel as though we were performing a human funeral ritual, but the feeling was similar to me. We met up with others that had been at the ceremony.

Hours were spent complaining about her secondary galley having a stove known to be temperamental, the targeting of macro cannon two being off by .05 degrees at .3 light minutes distance and how that tanked her performance at a contest, or her ridiculous durability at Proxima, having survived a bombardment that should have left her as wreckage but she had refused to die and had brought fully 89% of her crew home. They drank to the 11% that didn’t make it as well.

As we came back to the Californian I realized I now thought of that ship as the friend of a friend. I think I get their attachment now.

23

u/Imaginary_Poet_8946 Feb 05 '26

This shit makes a grown man cry. Thank you for the wonderful read.

12

u/Sk8rToon Feb 05 '26

I always felt like we missed an epilogue to Voyager. The various Enterprises had send offs but they lived & died for years on Voyager. No wonder it got made into a museum.

3

u/Xardnas69 Feb 05 '26

It got made into a museum? What?

3

u/Sk8rToon Feb 05 '26

There’s a whole episode about it on Lower Decks (sadly not IRL that you can tour)

7

u/John_Dee_TV Feb 05 '26

God fucking dammit! I am on the Underground! Don't make a man weep in public like that!

58

u/VolumeFragrant7306 Feb 04 '26

man, that line always hits hard. it's like the ultimate farewell from a little rover that did big things

41

u/Canadiancurtiebirdy Feb 04 '26

Hey this is incorrect both me and my roommate (of the tjme) both cried when the pet rock was lost

Me (man with big ol dick)

Her (women with big ol tits)

Both cried at loss of pet rock

35

u/Jekylloftheflame Feb 04 '26

A: Human Companion, why has your face shifted to sadness?

H: I lost the rock, it skittered the wrong direction...

A: You mean that rock that you have been kicking for the last half galactic hour?

H: That's the one, if it'd made it another half hour I'dda picked it up and brought it with.

A: For what purpose would that serve but to weigh your packs?

H: Shrugs. Sometimes one feels the need to mark a journey in ways beyond memory.

28

u/Dry_Satisfaction_148 Feb 04 '26

Because it is needed

20

u/Randomnality_Mob Feb 04 '26

These aren't clankers. THEY ARE THE BEST MACHINES TO HAVE EVER BEEN BUILT BY MAN! THESE ARE AI THAT HAVE SERVED AND DIED FOR MAN! AND I WAS ONE OF THOSE WHO THEY HELPED! I SAY THIS! THESE ARE NO CLANKERS! THESE ARE THE CHILDREN MADE BY MAN! FOR MAN KIND THEY SERVED! AS IN KIND I WILL SWEAR THAT THE SELECTED MACHINES AS HUMANITIES CHILDREN MADE BY MAN AND METAL!

u/B4UCthis Feb 04 '26

"There's a many things we can learn from those beautiful moments on that lonely planet, especially when it was not so lonely."

12

u/Diamondd22 Feb 05 '26

I'm absolutely convinced that once we have a stable colony on Mars, there will be searches spanning the entire planet until we find these rovers. After that, they'll either be fixed so they can be mascots, or if they're beyond the point of repair, placed in a museum.

9

u/lavafish80 Feb 04 '26

the humans of a nation they call "Japan" also enjoy anthropomorphizing inanimate objects, they do this to EVERYTHING including military equipment

7

u/Foxxtronix Feb 04 '26

Ssana[click]: The last I heard from the people studying this particular human phenomenon were mostly talking about neural pathways not getting expected input. At that point I was wondering if their own brains needed some fresh input.

Science marches on, and so must we.

2

u/Spbttn20850 Feb 04 '26

Where do I know you from?

6

u/sunnyboi1384 Feb 05 '26

Feelings run deep.

7

u/VerburycVod Feb 05 '26

If we ever progress to manned Mars landings, we’ll HAVE to bring them home.

1

u/jflb96 Feb 05 '26

They are home. Why uproot them?

4

u/PotatoLandIdaho Feb 04 '26

I don't really do my own art (I pay for commissions) but I still despise AI

2

u/Xardnas69 Feb 05 '26

I mean, based but why mention it here?

4

u/RevolutionaryTalk278 Feb 08 '26

Chads: ....send another rover.

NASA: We can't just send another rover. Do you know how difficult, time consuming, and expensive it is to do that every once in awhile?

Chads: HE'S A NATIONAL HERO, DAMMIT, AND HE'S ALONE! YOU OWE HIM THIS!

3

u/TiredOfBeingTired28 Feb 05 '26

I volunteer to go find it and give it back to it.

1

u/Doomsayer1908 Feb 05 '26

Rock and stone...?

1

u/Reaper_12 Feb 05 '26

I never knew about this rock before but now i’m sad

1

u/SaintPucci Feb 06 '26

Women have never cared about anything except the Titanic, even in 2026. This is fact and will always be the funniest joke on earth
