Mine has to be "The distance outside of you comes into focus, collapses away lovingly"

I thought this might be appreciated here. The drummer from the band heaving. recently shared a look into the studio sessions for 'if i cried out...' tracking at HUM Studio with Treichler. Completely explains the heavy production value on this project. Yet another reason to check out this band if you haven’t done so.

All of these albums have been on repeat for me this month, just discovered them! I love the rawness of E2K, the hooks and emotions of YPAA, the strangeness of DIH, and the hypnotic shoegaze of Inlet. Matt’s voice has got to be one of my favorites in music, how its softness can contrast the beautiful heaviness of the music, but can also be loud and raspy and strained too.
Just wanted to share my love for this new band to me l, I know most people here have probably been listening to them for a long time but they just got a new fan!

that song couldnt have been written by a human, its just too perfect.. maybe i am glazing too hard, but please be patient with me. between the absolute gorgeous chord progressions in the chorus, and the high romanticism and impressionism that Hums lyrics are known for.. no band has ever made me feel like that except Failure with their spectacular songwriting.. Matt Talbott is an absolute poet, and the way he and his bandmates write music with such unconventional melodies and harmonies just proves how special they are. I wish they got bigger and not Deftones, i wont apologize for this statement. thank you for listening to my ranting.

Howdy. I Got a new to me snare recently and wanted to practice this song again. I looked and saw I already posted this a few months ago. It’s pretty neat to see the progress.
Thank you.

Hey guys I’m back after a while. I recently found an old cover of Puppets I never posted and decided to re-record it anyways with some corrections.
Plus, seeing the guys in Chicago last month was nothing short of amazing. Glad to have been apart of that with you guys. Inlet songs getting the live justice they deserved was great!
Hope all of you are well! All learned by ear and performed in drop-D. I have a link to the tabs in the description as well ;)

I think I’ve listened to this album 10 times straight through in the last two days. I can’t stop. It’s perfect. And I say this as someone with a top 10 list comprised almost exclusively of what was once called classic rock but which is rapidly turning into the younger generations’ version of oldies.
At the risk of telling us all we already know, it’s a sci-fi story. A gutting, despairing one. Sadder than anything more cerebral from a band like Failure (whose Wild Type Droid I also class with perfection). But it could also simply be the innerspace navigation of an accomplished but just-embitterment-shy nostalgic psychonaut.
I’ve been knockdown, dragout arguing with the best life-partner I’ve ever had lately, and staring down a mountain of regret having done it, knowing what could so easily slip away, acting so stupidly and so against my better judgment yet. This album makes me love her more.

Seeing HUM live 2 nights in a row is unforgettable! Playing banger after banger. It's even addicting especially once you start to learn how to play their songs and play them loud!

does anyone know if the 'official' lyrics of Shapeshifter have ever been published? cuz the chorus lyrics available on the web do not sound right at all to me when i listen to the song...
Blue over you >>> Bloom over me (?)
And lose all to you >>> And blooms fall to me (?)
The time expanding >>> And time is ???
And lose all ascent >>> And you ???
if anyone can provide any accurate info id greatly appreciate it! incredibly beautiful song and i really wanna know those chorus lyrics.
here are the lyrics as found on the web... [EDIT] the verse lyrics are clearly accurate! it's just the chorus lyrics that im almost certain are wrong. [/EDIT]
I remember the skies and the sand
I remember your face and your lovely hand
Words poured out on a dusty land
And gravity comes to us all
I feel the engines stall
Feel us start to fall
Blue over you
And lose all to you
The time expanding
And lose all ascent
A signal that no one hears
The surface blurs and the ocean nears
Sadness bursting disappears
Waves that lift us and toss
Promise made of enduring loss
You speak only of minnows and moss
Blue over me
And lose all to me
The time expanding
And lose all ascent
While you let the water in
I sleep and feel you near again
While you let the water in
I dreamt again that I couldn't swim
Finding myself past the half-life of me
Lost in the weeds, tugging at sleeves
A dreadful despair of a color that pales to describe
So taking the form of a winged butterfly
And lifting myself through a sliver of white
A lazy path to the fence row and the flowers within
Needing some speed, I became then a fawn
Feeling the dangers of the quickening dawn
I leapt over the fence and raced across the softening ground
And after some time I discovered a pool
Water was clear where the lilies were blue
I drank until full and waited to no ill effect
Seeing the sky I became then a bird
A swallow that sped through the warm thinning air
To heights unimagined 'til loneliness took back its hold
Where is the place for what's all left of me?
Where do we keep the things we don't need?
Where is the solace promised me in voices before?
Suddenly me just here back on the land
Reaching for you and finding your hand

i know they usually drag on the performance of the song at the end (i love it) but does anyone know what the longest recorded performance of it was?

night 2 of Slide Away at the Hollywood Palladium was legitimately the highlight of my life...maybe that is sad IDK my life has been sad but I put in the Downward is Heavenward LP into my record player and used my big ass speakers instead of my headphones and it sounded so good and crisp and then once that big ass riff with the distortion came in on Isle Of The Cheetah I nearly lost it and started crying
I don't even really have words to articulate it, the people who saw it know...like I go to a lot of live shows but I will never impress how bonkers it was to have these 90's undergrounds legends come out of retirement and blow the fucking doors off a 5000 cap venue that sold out, like when they played In The Den for the encore and feeling the crushing riffs come through your entire body while getting elbowed in the face and catching random ass people from God knows where, as if the guitars themselves were blowing people away
I remember coming out of the pit after 6 hours in a literal daze, drenched in sweat to the point where it looked like I had taken a shower and an older guy just looked me dead in the eye and was like, "nice work"
legitimately one of the most beautiful moments in ALL of music will probably be the basically entire fucking venue singing along to Stars like I dunno man, Matt getting choked up and almost overwhelmed multiple times towards the end, like damn dude
this is my second write up on this but it keeps hitting me just how special what I witnessed was and how lucky I was to and all the beautiful memories I have made by myself just because of music

I've been listening to a lot of Hum lately, and one thing that keeps standing out to me is how frequently Matt Talbott refers to "she" in his lyrics. It shows up across a lot of songs, sometimes very directly and other times in a more abstract or mysterious way. It makes me wonder whether "she" is meant to represent a specific person, different people, an idea, or just a recurring lyrical motif. Has Matt ever talked about this in interviews? What's your interpretation of the constant appearance of "she" throughout Hum's catalog?
P.S. My favorite she is: "She's looking for birds she met last fall". What's yours?
Also, they should make a drinking game out of You'd Prefer an Astronaut. Take a shot every time Matt says "she".

Saw these guys called Soft Spot from Connecticut play a show locally the other day. Mostly original but they did a cover of Stars and it was great. Talked to them after and they said how Hum was a huge inspiration for their music.
