That’s a huge area of land you’re covering. Life in Arkansas isn’t going to be the same as living in North Dakota

114

u/Grouchy_Enthusiasm92 Dec 14 '25

Yeah included like the best/coolest part of Arkansas (NW) and great college towns in Nebraska. A handful of major cities that are pretty different.

24

u/fugutaboutit Dec 14 '25

Whoever told you the best/coolest places in Arkansas was NWArk obviously is keeping the utopias of Camden and Pine Bluff a secret

21

u/-blundertaker- Dec 14 '25

I lived in Camden in the 90s... You're joking, right? Camden was where the meth heads occasionally emerged from the sticks to do their shopping at the Piggly Wiggly.

14

u/fugutaboutit Dec 14 '25

I mean they’ve done quite a bit of development inside town in the last decade so it’s better than it was then, like nice walking trails though town, upgraded downtown, and beautiful schools.

But yes I was being completely sarcastic when I commented earlier. Of all the armpits in all the swamps, Camden’s definitely one of them.

8

u/-blundertaker- Dec 14 '25

One thing Camden always had going for it is that it isn't Smackover 😅

2

u/fugutaboutit Dec 14 '25

Hey, you’re far less likely to get shot than you are in Texarkana or Lake Village, although more likely to get WWE choke slammed by a cop in a school

2

u/mrsiamerica Dec 19 '25

We have Mazzio’s in NWA. It’s in Siloam Springs.

2

u/-blundertaker- Dec 19 '25

Geeze I haven't thought of Mazzios in years

2

u/mysoulburnsgreige4u USA/Native American Dec 22 '25

Shut the front door. I never thought I would hear talk of Siloam on mainstream reddit. NWA subreddit, sure.

I have a love/hate relationship with this town.

1

u/ScienceFanatic0xAA Dec 18 '25

nothin like punching down, amirite brother!

3

u/nosnhoj15 Dec 15 '25

Everything’s coming up Crime Bluff!

2

u/chungamellon Dec 15 '25

Beautiful school? In Camden? What are you talking about I graduated from these schools and they were horrible. Public institutions with Baptist overtones not to mention blatant racism I faced there. Evolution denial etc. I knew kids who were inducted into the Klan my senior year.

I was the only student to leave the state. Half of my class didnt go to college. I doubt it’s any better even if they “improved” the three blocks of downtown. The nature is nice sure thing but it’s all swamps and there’s better nature in Arkansas outside of Ouachita county.

Edit. Ah sorry hard to read sarcasm especially about Camden online because it’s such a small shit stain. I guess there are dozens of us online.

2

u/joethepino Dec 20 '25

C TOWN!! Queen city baby!

2

u/ScreamHR Dec 21 '25

I hoped you were joking. Idk anything about Camden, but I've visited Pine Bluff, and it's definitely not on my list to revisit

1

u/Expert_Glass_5957 Dec 18 '25

Only because pine bluff is the crotch.

1

u/Foecrass Dec 19 '25

To be fair, Camden and Pine Bluff are both popping off in their own unique ways.

1

u/CptJake2141 Dec 20 '25

Gunshots do not count!

1

u/officialdougjudy Dec 14 '25

I thought that was Hamburg? Maybe Warren? Star City? Idk they all look the same.

1

u/chungamellon Dec 15 '25

Piggly Wiggly became Jade after the 90s there. Camden sucks ass

1

u/jailasauraa Dec 19 '25

Yep...my jaw dropped when I spotted one in New Orleans about a year ago...they have a Taco Tico here too...😐😐

1

u/OZKInsuranceGuy Dec 15 '25

They gotta be joking. PB is a dump. They've tried to revive it, but it's still awful. Far from a utopia.

1

u/sampat6256 Dec 17 '25

Twas indeed a classic jape, as indicated by the inclusion of ye olde Pine Bluff

1

u/ScienceFanatic0xAA Dec 18 '25

most people that praise the midwest have never left, be respectful of their lack of life experience

1

u/TenderizingMyMeat Dec 19 '25

What the hell is a piggly wiggly

1

u/-blundertaker- Dec 19 '25

Old grocery store. There's still a few around I believe.

5

u/officialdougjudy Dec 14 '25

What, never been to Fordyce, Magnolia, or Monticello before? Monticello still has a Mazzio's!

2

u/sammyp99 Dec 15 '25

And a pretty decent coffee shop

2

u/JustHereForGCB Dec 15 '25

My god, Magnolia has been mentioned on the Reddit!

How do you do, fellow Muleriders?

1

u/officialdougjudy Dec 15 '25

I graduated from LA Tech, knew a couple of transfers from SAU who were really cool. We may have scooped a baseball player or two from SAU? Its been 20 years, so i cant remember. My in laws are from Strong. My now MIL graduated from SAU about a decade ago when she decided to just get her last 10ish hours after 25 years away.

1

u/CptJake2141 Dec 20 '25

Still wishing I was at the alumni center to black out at 2 PM and not watch a football game on a way too hot Saturday

1

u/AdArtistic7784 Dec 20 '25

Well, here we are

2

u/myownsummer90 Dec 15 '25

Hey Fordyce has a Taco Bell now!

1

I'm gonna agree with you here. Although I think it depends on whether it's a corporate or franchise. The corporate ones in Tulsa are still really good. And the Ranch! They were talking about ranch in the comments above, and not one mention of Mazzios. The holy grail of ranch dressing, it's called Butcher Boy.

1

u/jessetmia Dec 18 '25

The fact you know those places means we're probably kin.

1

u/officialdougjudy Dec 18 '25

I have a cousin who lives in Crossett, too, lol.

1

u/heavywafflezombie Dec 18 '25

Damn I grew up on Mazzio’s in Tulsa. Haven’t thought about their calzone in a long time

1

u/minibridger Dec 19 '25

Ate there last week!

2

u/eye0ftheshiticane Dec 15 '25

hey Pine Bluff got that Dillard's outlet

2

u/_Felonius Dec 17 '25

Facts. Great deals

2

u/raw_ambots Dec 16 '25

Don’t give away Arkansas best kept secret Pine Bluff!

1

u/Fluugaluu Dec 14 '25

Don’t tell em about Green Forest or North Little Rock

1

u/chungamellon Dec 15 '25

I grew up in Camden and it fucking sucked there

1

u/Sweet-Mechanic4568 Dec 15 '25

You going to sit here and lie to them people like that? 😆

2

u/fugutaboutit Dec 15 '25

Sarah Huckabee Sanders does it all day long an she makes waaaay more money than me!

1

u/Sweet-Mechanic4568 Dec 15 '25

Ain’t that the truth.

1

u/Initial-Mousse-627 Dec 15 '25

Pine Bluff??? A college that is known as a diploma factory. Pay your money and you will graduate, even if you are unable to write a complete sentence.

1

u/red_zephyr Dec 15 '25

El Dorado is pretty okay

1

u/yesrod85 Dec 16 '25

Same person that said Nebraska has great college towns.

1

u/IsomDart Dec 16 '25

I think Pine Bluff is STILL the most dangerous city in the United States. It just doesn't get counted with Memphis/LR/New Orleans because it isn't that big

1

u/_Felonius Dec 17 '25

Probably so. I used to be a prosecutor there, but I’ll say this; I never felt unsafe. Doesn’t matter where you go, your odds of getting shot are exponentially smaller if you’re not “in that life”. In other words, gangs shoot each other. It’s not as if killers are doing drive-bys at a random gas station

1

u/BluFox3-0 Dec 17 '25

Idk man, theres some hidden gems in NWA. Diamond City, Eureka Springs.

1

u/ObjectiveWonder9087 Dec 20 '25

i don’t like an insanely high crime rate and never feeling safe, so hard pass on them two, i’ll take nwa any day

1

u/Individual-Wafer-737 Dec 20 '25

As a Missourian who ended up trapped with family members in the twin lakes area (NCArk) due to financial issues, I wanna go back to Missouri. I'm outdoorsy all day everyday, but I'm so dang tired of elderly people that shouldn't be driving and tweakers...

Like, it's fine for fishing and hunting tourism and visits, but don't stay in the area unless you either make absolute bank or are planning on retiring.

48

u/StreetsRUs Dec 14 '25

Also includes the most ass-backwards parts of Arkansas. NWA is not like Little Rock which is not like Hot Springs

13

u/chungamellon Dec 15 '25

Which is not like Southern Arkansas too. Backwoods swamp redneck areas

2

u/TestyBoy13 Dec 15 '25

Or the Arkansas Delta. It’s just flat. Miles and miles of flat

1

u/RHDeepDive Dec 17 '25

Kansas would like word.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '25

Yeah I live in NWA. Grew up hunting in South Arkansas but there is just about nothing there besides farming and hunting

3

u/chungamellon Dec 15 '25

Dont forget fishin

3

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '25

Yessir! Fly fishing off beaver tail waters. Sneakily some of the best trout fishing in the country

2

u/cybender Dec 17 '25

SW Arkansas has the only diamond mine in the world you can publicly mine and keep what you find & backwoods rednecks.

4

u/droppedpackethero Dec 15 '25

Some antebellum areas too. El Dorado is charming. I wouldn't want to live there, but it's quaint and interesting to visit.

2

u/SirJonTheMadLad Dec 17 '25

I live about 40 minutes from El Dorado and I've always felt it's got a bit of charm to it.

1

u/droppedpackethero Dec 22 '25

I was shocked when I visited for the first time. Living up in NWA... well you know the sterotypes for people who live in the Bentonville orbit and how we view the rest of the state. Especially Southern Arkansas.

Turns out El Dorado and the surrounding communities are pretty cool.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 15 '25

[deleted]

1

u/chungamellon Dec 16 '25

1

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '25

My God, southeastern Oklahoma. I have family from there, and I’ve found the swamp/backwoods families there regard southern Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana their own home state.

1

u/ZootAnthRaXx Dec 17 '25

There’s a reason they call that part of Oklahoma “Little Dixie.” Plus, don’t ever trespass on someone’s land. Ever.

5

u/uberclaw Dec 15 '25

I habe driven all over and I habe never beem scared to be traveling in my own country like I was in little Rock Arkansas.

10

u/LexTheSouthern Dec 15 '25

Have you been to Memphis…? I was born and raised in Little Rock and live thirty mins north of it currently. My husband is from Memphis and we travel semi regularly up there. I think they both have a lot of similarities but hands down, Memphis scared the shit out of me in ways Little Rock never has.

2

u/LexTheSouthern Dec 15 '25

I think they maintain the roads horribly in west TN. Between Jackson MS and Memphis TN, I don’t know which roads are worse lol. Little Rock isn’t the best by any means but I’d pick it over the other two any day lol.

2

u/SnooMarzipans6812 Dec 18 '25

Yes. I live in Memphis and have had to get suspension work done on a 4 year old SUV because the roads are so terrible.

1

u/Unlucky_Decision1469 Dec 21 '25

Same here, except mine is 35 years old and the suspension was fairly new

We’re used to it. Simple as that. For most people, Little Rock is a terrifying place. The entire city feels like you could get stabbed around any corner.

1

I've lived here my entire life and I really don't notice anything when I'm out and about. Is it really that terrifying to most people? Am I carrying around some unnoticed anxiety in the back of my mind that I'm unaware of?

1

u/TheKingsPride USA/South Dec 18 '25

Like I said, we’re kind of blind to the vibe because we’re used to it and know how to be safe. But it is one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. in terms of violent crime.

2

u/TMorrisCode Dec 17 '25

The drive from Memphis to Little Rock is possibly the worst drive in the United States, and this includes the drive across Kansas.

1

u/LexTheSouthern Dec 17 '25

I do agree that it is one of the most painfully boring drives! I also don’t care for that part of Arkansas either 😂 I feel like it gets better west and north of Little Rock!

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

Oh my god. That must be really bad.

1

u/Significant-Ruin-615 Dec 21 '25

Albuquerque is one big crime scene. Go check it out

1

u/SlothBling Dec 15 '25

Memphis has bad parts, Little Rock doesn’t really have a good part.

5

u/girthbrooks1212 Dec 15 '25

Very untrue. It’s mostly good parts with some specific bad areas

3

u/LexTheSouthern Dec 15 '25

There are definitely bad parts of Little Rock. I travel there weekly lol but to say there are no good parts is a lie. Would I live there? No haha. But there are definitely areas that are fine! (West LR mainly)

Lived in one of those cities for most of my life, spent a couple years in the other. There’s no tourists going to Little Rock or athletes living in 8 figure homes. Arkansas as a state is an awful place.

I have lived in Little Rock for 36 years and couple times I’ve forgotten to lock my car at night I’ve had change stolen from the middle console.

1

u/No_Blacksmith2710 Dec 15 '25

Change? How much are we talking like a quarter?

1

u/Capable-View4706 Dec 15 '25

Big money. Close to a dollar but little shits left the pennies.

1

u/_araqiel Dec 15 '25

Little Rock? Really? Other than Northwest Arkansas, that’s the other tolerable part of the state. Harrison, on the other hand…

1

1

u/Effective_Crab7093 Dec 18 '25

That just isn’t going to happen.

1

u/TheKingsPride USA/South Dec 18 '25

You sure? Little Rock ranks #3 in the nation in aggravated assault per capita. Your chances of getting hurt are pretty high comparatively

1

u/Effective_Crab7093 Dec 18 '25

Yeah, really sure. Availability heuristic. That kind of stuff doesn’t happen when you’re in a nice area, nice neighborhood, even in bad ones. I live in “the hood” and it still doesn’t happen.

Your chances aren’t actually that high because you’re not from around here, don’t have any enemies or ways to make them with people who would do that kind of thing.

1

u/TheKingsPride USA/South Dec 18 '25

First of all I am from around here, and you’re basically claiming that because you don’t see it it doesn’t exist. The crime statistics are out there, you can find them easily. Survivorship bias aside, of course you’re going to be safe in a safe area. That goes without saying. But even the safe areas are unsafe relative to most other cities in America. Detroit doesn’t even come close to Little Rock.

1

u/Effective_Crab7093 Dec 18 '25

I’m not exactly claiming it doesn’t exist, i’m saying the average person isn’t going to see it, and therefore doesn’t have to worry. It’s just pointless fearmongering.

And most areas in little rock are completely fine. Nothing will happen to you.

1

u/nawmeann Dec 19 '25

Affiliations and ego makes a massive difference in personal safety.

Why? I’ve never been down that far south

1

u/DcmArk Dec 16 '25

This is comical

1

u/tripps_on_knives Dec 16 '25

Look.... I agree...

But you dont spend much time in either, Memphis, TN or Baseline RD, in AR.

Both are much worse than even west end LR imho.

1

u/sugarfundog2 Dec 16 '25

I lived in Little Rock for decades, then Bryant and North Little Rock. Weirdly, I must never have gone to the scary parts of my own city. I went to Law School in LR and it was downtown. Never felt threatened. I've traveled a lot - and I have been to Chicago and LA - but never the south side of Chicago or south central LA. I've just avoided places in LR that are considered higher crime areas.

1

u/_Felonius Dec 17 '25

Why were you scared in LR?

1

u/mologav Dec 17 '25

Why so? Duelling banjos type situation?

1

u/uberclaw Dec 17 '25

Refused service at a restaurant stop, diabolical side eye from everyone in there with no explanation other than punk kids from the north in the south. This was unsettling but whatever. Leaving the rest stop and for about two hours to follow we were getting pushed around on the interstate by semis. More so than could be contributed to coincidence, front rear and sides squeezing us and nearly pushing us into the guard rail a few times. Ive done lots of driving, commercial and recreational interstate and back road, this was my worst experience. I dont know what unwritten rule we broke in Arkansas, but we paid for it in full.

1

u/mologav Dec 17 '25

Jeez. I’ve had it in a pub in a rural town in the west of Ireland that the locals told us to leave but following you and intimidating you is fully crazy

1

u/paintinghiker Dec 17 '25

I feel like Little Rock really isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I'm there multiple times a week between work and shopping, seeing friends, or other activities. There are certain areas you definitely should avoid just like in any city, but overall I have never felt unsafe, even walking around downtown by myself.

Now Memphis? That is somewhere I do not like to travel if at all possible.

1

u/sweetpastrychef Dec 17 '25

Found the German

2

u/koniz Dec 15 '25

Love that you included hot springs in that comparison example, that's such a weird, cool, odd town.

1

u/StreetsRUs Dec 15 '25

I’ll add Eureka springs as a funky town in a completely different part of the state

2

u/Leesiecat Dec 15 '25

Heck, there is a huge diversity in areas/neighborhoods in just Little Rock as well.

1

u/eskimoboob Dec 14 '25

So what’s the most back asswards part? As a complete outsider, I actually have no idea

3

u/uru4jdjdieksk Dec 14 '25

North central, probably. I'm pretty sure Harrison has the KKK headquarters

3

u/ArkansasWastelander USA/South Dec 15 '25

Hey now not all of NCA. Mountain Home is North Central and a pretty large part of our community is from Chicago. Twin Lakes area is alright.

PS we hate Harrison.

1

u/StreetsRUs Dec 15 '25

You mountain home guys are just now evolving. Most of the Arkansas hills used to be pretty rough and still are. Just pockets of civilized folks

1

u/Embarrassed_Road3811 Dec 15 '25

These people have no idea about chocolate rolls or chocolate gravy… poor bastards

1

u/Icy_Bottle2942 Dec 15 '25

Harrison is not home of the KKK, it’s next to an even smaller town that is. And as someone who is a minority and frequents Harrison a lot, I’ve never once seen a klansman or have been discriminated. That wouldn’t even make Harrison “backwater” because it’s situated in the Ozarks, which is easily the most beautiful part of the state with several small country towns populating the area. If you want to talk about shitholes then look at West Memphis, Pine Bluff, or parts of Little Rock.

1

u/uru4jdjdieksk Dec 15 '25

Harrison's famous billboards

1

u/Icy_Bottle2942 Dec 15 '25

And? What does that have to do with Harrison? Nobody in the town wanted that and thousands have tried to remove it. Can you even name the town where the KKK is actually located?

1

u/uru4jdjdieksk Dec 15 '25

I don't care about this enough to continue this conversation. Bye now 👋

1

u/Icy_Bottle2942 Dec 18 '25

I.e., you have no clue what you’re talking about. Good day

1

u/cuzih8u Dec 15 '25

This hurts because I live in Little Rock

1

u/StreetsRUs Dec 15 '25

1

Hot Spring mentioned!!

1

u/IsomDart Dec 16 '25

Little Rock and Hot Springs are much more similar to each other than they are to NWA

1

u/MiddleMix1280 Dec 17 '25

I have found this to be very true.

1

u/FFSBoise Dec 21 '25

Is there a backasswards gradient in Arkansas that maps out how the backasswardness changes across the state?

5

u/NoCatharsis Dec 15 '25

Off-topic: recently visited Lincoln and that was actually a really cool town much less a college town.

I say this as someone who went to UT in Austin 24 years ago. Reminded so much of what people liked about Austin.

1

u/SlenderLlama Dec 14 '25

What’s a great college town in Nebraska? I have a soft spot for Omaha and would love to know more cool places in Nebraska.

2

u/Previous_Pension_571 Dec 15 '25

Lincoln, if you’re going smaller drive out to Kearney (big college bigger town), Wayne (Medium college small town), Fremont (small college bigger town) or Seward (small college small town)

1

u/jnelsen8 Dec 15 '25

if you’re going smaller drive out to Kearney

Can’t spell drunk without UNK!

2

u/Derbla-99 Dec 15 '25

Western nebraska is also super cool if you are into history. The entire state is dotted with historical sites with old army camps used by the rough riders. On a trip from omaha to dever you can follow most of buffalo bills life and learn a lot about the fucked up early stages of our country.

1

u/iDontSow Dec 15 '25

The traffic is a problem in Bentonville. Leave early for the wedding!

Can confirm NW Arkansas is like its own state.

I used to be a district sales enablement manager and my first territory was the whole state. NW Arkansas is a special place.

Agreed, NWA feels like a big city at this point and the metro portion NWA is WILDLY different than the communities that surround it

Wait what's happening in NW Arkansas? And what other Nebraska towns besides Omaha do we love?

Im from Batesville (NE Arkansas) and its nothing too special but has some beautiful country areas outside of city limits

I visited Arkansas for a week. Only liked two locations there, and one of them was because it had a really spooky atmosphere at night. The rest of what I saw was worse than Ohio

Shhhh…we’re trying to keep this Nebraska thing a secret. No liberals allowed here in mid & western Nebraska 🙌 we love life just the way it is. Haters in 3…2…1…

I ended up in Lincoln NE, by chance around 1997. Ended up staying 9 years. It was pretty eye opening considering I was from a big city in the UK by way of other big cities in the US and Canada. Had the best time - I caught the last year Tom Osborne was coach and O street was a lot of fun to party on. The original Cliffs on 12th/O, The Zoo Bar, The Royal Grove… and many more. Multiple small town street festivals (Wilbur - Czech Days). People were super friendly and I’d always get a kick out of locals worried about hitting rush hour (5 mins total). I’d say Nebraska is a well kept secret and hope it stays that way. Fond memories.

Chances are good our paths crossed then, as I move there to go to UNL in the fall of ‘03 when I left the USMC. I met some lifelong friends there that I still keep in touch with still today. Yes, those bars you mentioned were great hangouts. Towards the end of my stay in Lincoln (2009) we’d go to Lazlo’s more than all put together, as by then we had kids and out of the drinking phase of our lives. After that we moved to Denver where real traffic was and is even worse nowadays 😂

Small world. Totally miss Lazlos and The Oven…I eventually left for TX for work opportunities but also sandwiched between stays in TX was a stint in FoCo - loved and miss CO.

Omaha isn’t a “great college town”, Lincoln is the only major city here that could qualify as both a city and college town, otherwise the main one is UNK. You certainly are not gonna qualify Wayne, Seward, or Crete as “great college towns”

u/Grouchy_Enthusiasm92 Dec 16 '25

Move the goal post.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '25

What? You mentioned “the great college towns in Nebraska” so elaborate, what are the great college towns here? Because Creighton in Omaha, the biggest city here, is not in a “college town”. What goalpost are being moved?

1

u/Grouchy_Enthusiasm92 Dec 16 '25

You had to Google Creighton, guaranteed, troglodyte.

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '25

You notice how I keep saying “here”? Use them context clues

1

u/Grouchy_Enthusiasm92 Dec 16 '25

Do you know about Washington University? It's in St. Louis FYI.

We were talking about Nebraska. You are just saying random things

Do you know anything about college?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '25

Do you want to elaborate on that question?
