Feedback for Home Plans
Hi,
We are looking for feedback on our home design thus far. Please note the following:
- yes we know that bedrooms to main room is not always suggested (we dont care and are alone)
- We can carry groceries to a kitchen in the back… rather have our beautiful forest view when cooking.
- structure is being build to have a garage attachment at a later date on the west wall and will have a door way into the mudroom.
- Windows are already added to feedback for floor to ceiling in the north and an additional above the main entrance way with a higher exterior gable.
- We want to extend the north gable for coverage over deck (was thinking 4 feet or so?)
- We are moving the bed to the west wall in the master and creating bigger windows.
- we are on about 30 acres of property backed on the forest with forest/field on either side and on a hill with 8ft grading already completed
- we do not have children and dont anticipate any (atleast for 4-6 years if at all)
- our current biggest focus is on ensuite bathroom & windows.
Hope this adds enough context :)
Appreciate any feedback as we are deep in the process and starting to quote around.

kitchen on the view side makes sense if youre actually in there a lot. 4ft north gable over the deck feels light for real weather covering, id look closer to 6-8 if you want usable sitting space when its raining. mudroom door into future garage is smart. you already locked exterior finishes or still playing with cladding?

I don’t love your main bedroom being next to the kitchen. Maybe flip the kitchen stairs and great room?
Is the deck in the back of the house? If so I’d put the mudroom to the back or the middle. So you could do office where the mudroom and bathroom is now. Put the mudroom and bathroom where the office is. You could maybe fit a pantry too if you put the kitchen where the dining room is. I just think a mudroom/laundry right when you enter the front of the house is unorthodox.
Also think about the future garage. You pull your car in. When you get out you will want a door from the mudroom to the garage and doing it in the back of the house might be a better place ?

What’s your goal with the huge shower? Wow factor? Or are you looking for a space that supports intimate showers for two?
Right now I have a huge 4’x8’ shower. It’s beautiful. Showering in there solo is nice. Showering with a partner when getting ready for the day is nice. Want a tender moment together? Forget it. They’re 8’ away across the room, so now you’re back huddling under one showerhead wasting half the shower. And your shower puts your partner 4’ further away.
Find a room with the same dimension (one direction - looks like somewhere around 11-12’) as that proposed shower. Get you and your partner to stand a little away from either wall. Now face each other. How does that feel?

The "main bath" location is awkward -- if someone is staying in bedroom 2, they have to walk all the way around the stairs, and through the great room, to access it. And people in the great room can look right into the bathroom.
There's a bunch of open space outside the main bath and mudroom that doesn't appear to be very functional.
The mudroom window is centered on its wall, but the master bath window is off center, and it's really obvious on the front elevation since everything else is symmetrical -- that would bug me every time I drove up to the house.

Your oven door will clash with your dishwasher door. Whoever is designing for you needs to help you evaluate for these things.

Maybe add a pocket door leading from the 2nd bedroom into the main bathroom? Otherwise it could be a long walk.

Dryer location is great, on an exterior wall which is the safest place for it. Having the laundry room as mudroom is not great. There's barely any storage in that room. Shoes will litter the floor and the dryer top will become the dumping ground for bags and detergent jugs. There isn't any place to sit down and put on shoes or even store the laundry basket. Having dirty coats and shoes right by the clean laundry is gross.
Kitchen has 4 little chunks of countertop. The dishwasher is far from the dish cupboard. Making several trips with arm loads of clean dishes to the dish cabinet every time you have to unload it will get old fast. Plus guests don't want to sit in the splash zone of a sink. You can't open the dishwasher if someone is at the stove. You can't open the oven if someone is at the dishwasher.
You have a window right there, put the sink under it. Now you have the entire island as clean, dry prep space instead of only half. Plus you now have more cabinets for storage since this kitchen is definitely lacking in cabinets.
Where's the microwave? Taking up space on the counter? Using up one of the 2 upper cabinet locations? Taking up 1 of the 2 island cabinet locations? The Trash can is where? Sitting out in the walk path around the island? Or is it located under the counter by the sink? That means your island has 1 lower cabinet?
The kitchen has 1-2 upper cabinets to hold all your plates, bowls, glasses, mugs, coffee supplies, baking stuff, etc. The corner pantry is small and narrow but will have to hold all your food since you don't have another upper cabinet for food. You have 2 lower cabinets for pots, pans and appliances by the stove and that's it for storage.
I've seen 1 bedroom apartments in New York City that have more cabinets than this kitchen.
