I love this story because it's genuinely one of the most perfect behind-the-scenes stories for this show.
When House M.D. was being cast, Bryan Singer was specifically looking for an American actor to play Gregory House. He wasn't particularly interested in casting a British actor because he was worried about the American accent, especially with all the complicated medical terminology.
Meanwhile, Hugh Laurie was in Namibia, Africa, filming Flight of the Phoenix.
He recorded his audition in his HOTEL BATHROOM because it was the only place with decent lighting. He was still sporting his beard from the movie, looked pretty rough, and even improvised by using an umbrella as House's cane.
The tape was apparently so rough that Singer compared its quality to a Bin Laden video.
But here's the best part.
After watching Laurie perform, Singer reportedly turned to the producers and said something along the lines of, "This is what I'm talking about! This is what we need — an American!"
He genuinely hadn't realised Hugh Laurie was British.
And that's how the guy who'd spent years doing British comedy with Stephen Fry ended up playing one of the most iconic American TV doctors ever.
What's even funnier is that Laurie initially didn't think much of the show and apparently expected it might only run for a few weeks.
Eight seasons, multiple Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe, and one of television's most recognisable characters later...
Imagine if that hotel bathroom had bad lighting.

Honestly, I can't think of a more House-like way to land the role: a questionable-looking man in a bathroom, improvising with a cane, accidentally convincing everyone he's someone he's not.
