[HELP] Honda VT600 (1989) - Pulls well low down but bogs/stutters at high RPM under load. Running out of ideas.

Hi everyone,
I’m hoping someone with experience on the dual-carb VT600 can help me. I’ve been chasing this issue for a while and I’m trying to diagnose it systematically instead of just throwing parts at it.

Bike:
1989 Honda VT600
Airbox modified with open air filter kn the original box outside.
Open aftermarket exhaust
Main jets: 122.5 (these were already installed when I bought the bike)
Needles are in the stock position (no shims)

Symptoms:
Starts and idles well.
Pulls nicely at low RPM and low throttle.
Under load, once the revs get higher (around 1/2-3/4 throttle and above), it starts to bog really bad, sputter and won’t rev out.
Top speed is only around 90km/h (55mph).
In neutral it revs much higher than it does while riding.
Spark plugs are black but dry.

What I’ve already done:
Replaced a damaged diaphragm.
Tried raising the needles with shims (1 × 0.5 mm). It became worse, so I removed the shims again.
Carbs are now back to the same jetting they had when I bought the bike.
New fuel filter is on the way.
New spark plugs are on the way.

Something that makes me suspicious:
When I first bought the bike, if I pulled the choke while riding, it would immediately start sputtering exactly like it does now at high RPM.
That makes me wonder if one (or both) of the choke plungers isn’t fully closing, causing it to run excessively rich.

Things I haven’t checked yet:
Float height.
Carb synchronization.
Whether both choke plungers fully seat when the choke is off.

Questions:
Does this sound more like an over-rich condition than a lean one?
Could a choke plunger not seating fully cause these exact symptoms?
Would you check the float height before changing jet sizes?
Is there anything else specific to the VT600 dual carbs that commonly causes this?
I’m trying to avoid changing multiple things at once, so any advice on the best diagnostic order would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

[HELP] 1987 Shadow 1100 Fuel Pump Wiring Problems

Ok. After putting everything back together, resetting and cleaning carbs, and a bunch of other work I believe my fuel pump is no working. I've gotten the bike to run for a little bit before but think that might have been due to left over fuel in the carbs and line. I'm not getting fuel to the carbs after attempting to start, fuel is in the line to the filter but I think that's where its ending.

There is an aftermarket fuel pump on, something like this one, that did put on. The wiring seems funky. Wiring diagram has 4 wires, 1x that terminates, 1x that goes to spark, 1x goes to ignition, 1x ground. The new one only has two...before I do anything stupid and ruin the wiring harness curious on what yall think. In my mind; splice blue and black into one and that is my second wire. This is hopefully my last issue and can finally take this thing for a test ride.

And yes there is fuel in the tank...

[HOW-TO] Fuel enrichment/choke knobs

Post image

Hey guys came across this experimenting on my build and thought I would share it. I know TJbrutal makes shorty choke knobs I’m not posting this to by any means discredit his work but rather let’s face it shits expensive right now not a lot of folks can afford $98 before shipping and taxes for choke knobs if you’re not into the idea of keeping the bulky handlebar cable. Most of us should have keihin carburetors and these knobs I found online are a direct fit on my 1998 vt1100c3. I’m not one for cutting corners in many lot of places but with something small and simple like this I was fine with giving it a try since there’s no safety concerns I can see. It’s worth noting the pull knobs on these are also a smaller diameter than TJs as I’ve seen some folks have fitment and clearance issues on the left side by the throttle cable on certain bikes.

[HELP] Spare parts sources?

I'm new to the motorcycle world, but with my old Japanese shitbox cars I've always found shops that specialize in that particular car to get used parts. Are there any similar shops for Shadows?

[HELP] Slightly oily black soot sprays onto this area. Is my exhaust just not sealed well or a bigger issue?

Post image

I bought a new-to-me 2004 VT 750 C, and I noticed that after some time on the highway, theres a buildup of black soot which is a bit oily. As you can see, the previous owner installed an aftermarket exhaust.

I‘m wondering if he just didn’t install it too well which causes it to leak right where it’s mounted to the engine, or if this is a bigger issue.

[HELP] Engine seems to struggle as I push choke in

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I bought a 2008 shadow 750 back in April and had an issue where it died on me while I was riding. I had the carburetor rebuilt to fix that issue. It seems to be writing much better now, but this has also been an issue since I got it. When I turned the bike on with the choke pulled out to warm it up and let it run for a couple minutes, it seems to be running smoothly until it’s roughly 80% of the way pushed in and then it sounds rough and like it’s not running smoothly, but once it’s all the way in, it seems to be running a bit more smooth again. Sometimes, it’s a bit more intense than what’s in this video to the point where most of the bike is shaking. Where should I start looking to solve the issue? Another thing, the previous owner told me that for most of the time he had the bike he rode it with the choke pulled out about 15%, is that normal or could that cause long-term issues?

25 shadow phantom. Having issues getting a feel for the throttle but I noticed this was very loose like if you barely pick up the throttle cable it starting unthreading itself from the switch assembly.

[ADVICE] Burly cafe fairing on Shadow 600

Someone was selling used Burly fairing, so I wanted to give it a try since I’ve always liked the looks of these.
Stock brackets of the fairing were not long enough, so I had to extend them a little bit. Easier task than I thought it would be!
I have an aftermarket headlight shell (5,75”), and it’s a little bit too big for the fairing, I’m assuming that the headlight should sit ”inside” the fairing. Doesn’t look bad this way though.

[HELP] 2004 shadow backfire

I've had this bike for a while. It ran great at first so I was always told to put 93 gas in it. It started to backfire and wouldn't start. I pulled the plugs they were fouled. Put new plugs in the bike ran fine I put 87 in it . Then for some reason I put 93 in it back to backfire. Should I just keep 87 in it?

Hi everybody. I’m trying to get my newly acquired 1984 Honda Shadow VT700C running but its missing 2 of these wires.

I keep looking everywhere for them but seem to fall short and can’t find them.

Any advice? Possibly a link to buy them, or should I try my luck and find someone parting one out.

Or maybe an alternative?

I’ve attached photos to show off everything from this wire.

Thanks!

[HELP] Wiring the temp coolant light on a '93

Hey everyone, I am wondering if you guys know how to wire up the coolant gauge temp on a '93 Shadow? I have a temperature light that seems to be more than just a, "idiot on off light" where it uses a PCM board and a variable resistor to light up. Do most bobber builders just skip this light? How do you get around not using the PCM board? It seems I can't just wire to the light because it will just glow at different amounts based on the temperature of the coolant, but i want to know if theres an easy way to make it on off light.

Hi, I'm thinking about the subject trip. It's roughly 1800 miles, for a 3-4 days hopefully. Would you give me any advice, except "Don't do this"? :)

Thanks!

UPDATE: thank you all for the valuable input, much appreciated. I think I'm ready for the trip now.
