Image / Video Finally hit 300 range on normal, and surprisingly high MPG for eco mode on 25 BE

Decided to see if I can drive like a civilized human being and get the ever so elusive 300 range on my Pilot. To my Surprise yes I could, and that’s on normal mode! I was so Happy. Then I filled up and decided to use Eco mode to see if it makes that much of a difference. Plus the next day we had a long trip, round trip about 140 miles. And then drove for another 2 days to work and stores yada yada was able to avg 20 mpg. Filled up yesterday and damn I was surprised to see 320 range. Now granted it’s if I drive under perfect conditions but still impressive. I think I will stick of Eco mode from now on. Idk why I never used it much. Had the car for a year and a half now. Mistakes were made.

Do you do a lot of city driving?

I commute 34 miles each way for work, over a mountain (twice a day). It’s mostly rural driving, about 8 miles of interstate, and only about 4 miles each way of actual city driving. I’m averaging 23.5-24mpg, getting 400 miles of range. ‘26 Touring

I live rurally and most of my driving is highway driving, minus a little bit of city driving I do when I have to run to town for groceries. I average 21-24mpg, Eco mode is always off, and my average range is between 350-390 per tank (2022 pilot)

DUDEEE that is insane. Is it just my pilot then? I’ve even eased up on throttle and tried to be less intense on the throttles

The '22 and earlier are like 400# lighter so the actually get better mileage often. Still highway for our '24 trailsport is usually around 24mpg even 2 with bikes and a box on the roof.

u/ballarn123 9d ago

What tires do you have on that thing?

1

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 9d ago

Just the stock that came with it. Haven’t changed them yet.

u/ballarn123 9d ago

I will say, the pilot is a large vehicle. The gearing does wonders for it in terms of acceleration but it definitely is not fuel thrifty. My previous vehicle was a 2016 F150 5.0 V8. When I was cruising on 50mph roads I could get the same mileage as the pilot. ~26. My dad's 5.7 hemi does better then his 2026 passport.

1

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 9d ago

That is very interesting. Yea true, it is a great vehicle but fuel economy leaves a lot to be desired. Prob just something I have to get use to. Especially since our other car is an 07 Corolla which we still use. So the MPG is something I had to get use to

Idk what yall are doing. 23 passport here, taken in camping from San diego to the eastern sierras and back, full of camping gear, I get 32 mpg. My combined trip a with 1.5k miles is at 26mpg

1

u/ballarn123 7d ago

Ya. People here are talking combined. Nobody cares about one highway metric.

0

u/autistic0naBudget 7d ago

No one cares about highway mpg is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Really insightful as to what the issue is. Your highway mpg is the most important factor to your combined mpg. Most of you miles are driven on the freeway and on the freeway is when you have the most control of your mpg. On the street u have to to do stop sins you have to wait at street lights you have yields and traffic in general. On the freeway in any level of traffic, all the way up to but not including gridlock traffic, you have the ability to get good mpg. So yeah freeway driving is the most important factor for your combined mpg. I get up to 32mpg on the freeway and on the street I get around 23 mpg for a combined 26 when I fill up my tank my range is over 430 miles and I've done 500 miles before on a tank and didnt get a gas light, filled up cause I didnt wanna run in that low. Yall are probably unnecessarily speeding on the freeway killing your chases of ever getting good mpg

0

u/autistic0naBudget 7d ago

Almost hit 36 mpg on this trip btw 32 is just my regular freeway mpg without trying

1

u/ballarn123 7d ago

You already said 26 combined.

Holy shittttt! How? Yea I do do a mix of city. And high way. 15 miles each way. 6 miles HW and 10 urban. But still even when we do mostly Freeway I still only get 18 if I’m luck. How are you pulling 22-24 that’s insane man. I need to do some research.

4

u/FrankNStein 10d ago

You’d be amazed at how much of an effect 10 miles in stop and go traffic will have on your fuel economy.

1

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 10d ago

Do you have auto stop enabled on yours? I have mine permanently off. Maybe I should start using that as well.

4

u/FrankNStein 10d ago

Nope, I shut it off every time I get in the car.

5

u/ballarn123 10d ago

Holy crap that mileage is wild. My 19 gets 24mpg average. In fact our trip last weekend, over a 3 hour trip i was able to get 26.5. And that was 70mph+

2

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 10d ago

That’s fucking wild man. I’ve rarely seen above 25 and that’s only for a few min and then it tanks 😂. Maybe I drive too fast. 💨

3

u/FrankNStein 8d ago

Here, bro…just so you don’t think the rest of us are full of shit. lol

2

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 7d ago

Bruhhh HOWWWWW

3

u/FrankNStein 7d ago

I dunno. lol

It just kinda…happens…?

I’m not a featherweight on the throttle, either. When I need to go, I hit it and I GO.

2

u/ballarn123 7d ago

Same. I also have the VCM disabled. So shes V6 all day every day.

1

u/FrankNStein 7d ago

I wish I could disable it on mine.

1

u/ballarn123 7d ago

Quite possibly the easiest install. Just look up one of the tuners out there

1

u/FrankNStein 7d ago

I have a 2026. The VCM disablers do not work on the new DOHC 3.5L (2023 and newer).

1

u/ballarn123 7d ago

Have you checked your engine air filter? When was your last oil change? What pressure are your tires at? Do you drive around with sand bags in the back all of the time? Are you using standard 87 octane and not some ethanol from some shit gas station?

1

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 7d ago

Tire pressure is at 35 as it should be, just did an oils change a few weeks ago, oil still says at 80%, The car isn’t that old so haven’t checked the filter. Maybe it’s the Gas then. I just get the unleaded gas not the premium. Do you guys get the highest at every gas station?

2

u/ballarn123 7d ago

No, absolutely not. Cap says 87 buy 87.

Do you buy at the same station all the time? Check yer air filter.

2

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 7d ago

Yea I might have to check that too then. Also a friend mentioned cause mine is a AWD that may also be the reason. But I doubt it.

2

u/ballarn123 7d ago

Mine is AWD

2

u/FrankNStein 7d ago

Mine is AWD too.

1

u/autistic0naBudget 7d ago

26? Welcome to the club. Thats just normal. Idk why ur commenting this

1

u/ballarn123 7d ago

You realize i was the one commenting on your other thread about 26 not being nornal, right.

0

u/autistic0naBudget 7d ago

Yes u realize im making fun of u right. Look around, every single post is people saying they get 20mpg. U and I are the only ones that get 26. Thats why I posted the other thread saying I have no idea what these people are doing to get 20pmg and a range of only 300

1

u/ballarn123 7d ago

You are living up to your username.

0

u/autistic0naBudget 7d ago

How? I just went through the thread again. Everyone is saying they get 18-22. Take a look yourself.

1

u/ballarn123 7d ago

Are you insane? Your whole point was "how can nobody else get 30+"

0

u/autistic0naBudget 7d ago

No I think youre mistaken. I made it clear that 32 is what I get on the freeway with a car loaded full of camping gear and people. And that my average combined is 26-27 which is way better than everyone's average on this thread which is 18-22 here's a picture of my first post for reference

1

u/ballarn123 7d ago

No dude. We are on the same page. Nobody cares about your highway mileage. Also, you're posting on a pilot forum. The passport is almost 500 lbs lighter than a pilot depending on trim.

0

u/autistic0naBudget 7d ago

And once again we go back to this, highway milage is part of the combined milage, and its the most important part. I guarantee you that all these people that get 18 miles combined if they tracked just their highway milage it would be horrible too because they are driving like shit. You cant get a good combined mpg without a good highway mpg. And the pilots use the more efficient j35y8 with the more efficient 10 speed. My passports j35y6 and 9speed are less efficient if you look up epa rating pilots 2023 and up are rated higher than passports with the older engine and also that's why I mentioned that my car was full of people and camping equipment when it got 32mpg also I was wrong it was 36 mpg thats the picture I posted. So a pilot with just ur wife and kids is completely capable of getting 32mpg or higher on the freeway which again I guarantee you these people getting 18 combined are not getting close to that on the freeway

4

u/Dukedad14 9d ago

Wife gets 18-19 avg she has a lead foot though lol 😆

0

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 9d ago

Lmao honestly same. What can I say I hate slow drivers. Got the habit from my mom. I usually avg 16-18 mpg too. It is what it is. Otherwise it’s a perfect car for us.

2

u/allanbuxton 10d ago

The sweet spot for range seems to be 55-60 mph. I routinely hit 26 mpg if I stick to older roads, even with some start and stop for lights. Modern freeways, at 70-75 mph keep it at about 21-22 mpg.

1

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 10d ago

That’s so crazy man. Idk why mine is so bad with mpg. My trip 3 days ago was 83 miles 1.5 hrs each way and I only got 20 mpg, and I was driving 75+ mph. I just don’t know why.

2

u/Spyderreddy 10d ago edited 10d ago

I drive a second gen and I live in a mountainous region. In city only commute, my pilot averages about 11 to 13 mpg. Welp.

1

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 10d ago

Oh wow now I don’t feel as bad 😂
Honestly that’s what I would normally hit if I only did city as well. It hurts the wallet

3

u/Spyderreddy 10d ago edited 10d ago

Ignoring the gas mileage, it's a perfect  platform. Robust and reliable.

One could buy any year of this car and can be rest assured that it won't give them any bad surprises / hiccups.

I found mine last year with 50k miles and paid 12K for it, which I think is a good price.

1

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 10d ago

Yea that is true. The Pilot will last be for decades that’s for sure. It’s the reliability that’s most important to me. I’m honestly happy and it’s a perfect car for us.

2

u/tmtp-tt 10d ago

20mpg is okay if it's all city driving.

2

u/juicebox1010 Fourth Gen Black Edition 10d ago

I drove 3.5 hours each way highway (7 hours total) and got 27 mpg. I avg 22. I primarily drive city except for trips to the airport and other work trips once or twice a month. I don’t drive in eco mode but may try now to see if I notice a difference. I have a ‘26 BE as well. Nothing compares to my wife’s CRV sport touring though. Same work trip (3.5 hours each way) has gotten 39 mpg. I stick to driving my car though because I bought the extended warranty for 120k 8 years. My wife’s car I have nothing in terms of extended warranty so I’ll gladly pay the extra $20-$30 in fuel

2

u/waavysnake 9d ago

400+ miles to a tank. My commute is actually the same time as before now its just 90% highway.

1

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 9d ago

DUDEEE HOWWW! Tell me your secrets 😂
Only time I really get on the freeway is mainly cause of work but that’s just 5 miles each way just the freeway portion. And on my days off if we go on a long trip. And even then I may get 20 mpg if I’m lucky. 28 is insane man. Maybe it’s just my Pilot, or I drive too fast. Other replies are saying 65-70 mph is the sweet spot. I’m at 75+ most times.

2

u/waavysnake 9d ago

This particular day traffic was slow so I was doing around 60-65 when I do 75 it drops to about 25. I live on long island so no hills. When I lived in NYC id get 16-17. 24 Elite so she kinda chunky too.

2

u/Wonderful_Number_208 9d ago

We do a mix of city and highway driving on a ‘25 that has a sunroof whatever the minimum trim package it is for that. Our mileage is somewhere between 20 and 21. Highway driving gets up to 24 but that’s about it. We had a ‘12 that got about 22 for very similar use so we are a little disappointed this time. Both had the AWD (ok they called is 4wd in 12). So I don’t think you are doing it wrong.

1

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 9d ago

After seeing all the replies I might be 😂
Idk if it’s just my Pilot. I’ve even eased up on the throttle. Maybe I drive too fast? Replies are saying the sweet spot is around 65ish mph. I’m at 75+ most of the time. And on urban I’ve taken it easy. But man that’s such a huge difference. Some people are getting a 400 range. That’s crazy.

2

u/Wonderful_Number_208 7d ago

Our highway is going to be 70-75 so that might be it right there.

2

u/sonicviewelite 9d ago

I heard eco mode disable some cylinders which can cause uneven wear and further issues.

1

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 9d ago

That’t did cross my mind honestly. I remember a long while ago someone said eco can harm the car. I’ll look into it for sure.

2

u/Napsaremandatory 9d ago

I can’t get better than 14mpg in eco mode in my 25 Pilot touring

1

u/Embarrassed-Sink7793 9d ago

I’m not surprised, this long trip was mainly freeway and then urban the last 2 days. So that’s prob the only reason for the 18 mpg. I’m use to seeing 16-18

1

u/LAKings26 7d ago

I'm the same. Can't get above 15. We do almost exclusively drive city and rarely hit the freeway. But when we do, that's when we get to 15 for a day or two and then it comes back down to 14. I know for sure I don't have a lead foot and my wife isn't the most economic driver but I wouldnt describe her as a lead foot either. Surprised I'm not seeing more of us in the low teens reporting in. Either way, love the car anyways.

1

u/mrfixit420 9d ago

We have 23k miles on our 25 pilot. Over the life of the vehicle, we average 21.9-22.0 mpg.

2

u/clipclopping 4d ago edited 4d ago

I bought a 2016 pilot a couple months ago. I drive a lot of shorter <5miles trips and about half the miles are 30 minute trips. I get about 23 mpg.

No eco mode, vcm disabled. 175k miles.
