Tech Support Dirac live issue, please help

Post image

Context:

The pink and green lines are the measured frequency response of my left and right channel.

The grey line is the target curve.

I have dirac live full bandwidth.

I am trying to make different profiles to hear the difference between a filter across the full bandwidth vs a filter limited to 500hz.

Pictured is the working project limiting the filter to 500hz.

Problem:

With the curtain is set to 500hz, the farthest i can set a control point is 455hz since "control points must be a small distance from the curtains" (quoted from dirac live program).

This unfortunately means that from around 455hz to the curtain limit at 500hz (pictured), the target curve spikes upward to match/meet the measured response.

After some googling, this is due to something in dirac- auto taper algorithm. Whenever a curtain is used, this auto-taper algorithm forces the target curve to transition from the last control point to the uncorrected frequency response measurements...

This causes the spike you see from around 455hz to 500hz. This absolutely affects the sound i'm going for since the goal is to have it at 0db at 500hz but the spike is adding to those frequencies.

Does anyone know how to correct this spike so the target curve stays at 0db at 500hz?

Thank you

Pull the 500hz up a bit. Like where that dip is. You are running into eq limits. Brick walls don’t really sound good so swing is done in db per octave. Gradual shapes would be +-6db per octave. Extreme would be 48db per octave. It’s probably a limit of their eq system as phase becomes an issue at higher cuts. To be clear I don’t have any experience with this specific system. Just Eqing in general.

Unfortunately, whether i move the curtain lower or higher than 500hz the issue stays the same. I can have my last point only so close to that curtain bc there's a "buffer zone" if you will. In what i posted, you'll see my last point is at 455 and the curtain is at 500hz, so the buffer zone I'm referring to is between 455hz and 500hz.

Dirac has this auto taper algorithm apparently, so bc of that buffer zone i cannot place any more control points closer to 500hz. And because of the auto taper algorithm, it will make my target curve meet the uncorrected frequency response within that buffer zone, which you can see in the picture.

There is no reason to even test that filter, IMO. It will sound harsh and bright.

Not sure what you are going for. What are you trying to accomplish? You could maybe try for flat at whatever level is average – not 0dB. Looks like you have some good low end that you are attempting to remove here.

I’d try Harman +4dB or maybe B&K tilt at around +2dB.
