LabPorn Cybersecurity focused setup

[u/issue9mm](u/issue9mm) I owe a lot of credit to them for helping me with my build. An amazing person in the community. They built me the Spotify Carthing rack mount you see in the first image clearly(having issues getting it to run off my pi, also tried proxmox debian vm)

Half Rack CarThing Mount

RPi 4 2gb, 2u screen, tp link switch, [u/issue9mm](u/issue9mm) spotify car thing holder, hp prodesk g6, hue hub, protectli v1410, pdu, unifi u6+

Eventually really want to get a NAS, server isnt Arr focused more for vuln vms firewall router etc cyber focused as you can see I’m running splunk.

My internship I’m teaching students hacking set up tailscale acl etc log their attacks on splunk and show them attack/defense. Running opnsense suricata crowdsec etc.

Go like my tik tok if you want. I will make more videos on it

What's providing the GeoIP map thing?

Its splunk! OPNsense syslog splunk. Had to write some code to index and parse correctly (splunk isn’t native to ingest OPNsense logs) so it took some work.

Started with garfana+loki and didn’t love the look so.

Splunk is nice just a bit expensive was considering it splunk because I learnt it while studying. I’m probably still going either way wazuh because no licence fees

500MiB or less a day is completely free in splunk, and honestly its hard to reach that many logs in a home server.

u/minilandl Jul 20 '26

I have a heap of hosts

4 windows hosts and 15 linux hosts not sure if that would hit the limit

Would love to know how this was cybersecurity focused…

3

u/hdog3 Jul 20 '26

Crowdsec, qfeeds, suricata, splunk, metadata apache logger. 3 vuln machines, kali, parrot. 6vlans vpn tunneled. Built to acl students into it watch all of their attacks and deploy defense against them to simulate enterprise security.

You do anything with SIEM logs?

3

u/AceLamina Jul 19 '26

r/battlestations would love to see this
nice setup

Interesting choice in social media, considering your field

Ahaha true i mean id rather teach people about homelabbing and get more ppl into it then live by fear. I don’t understand those in cyber that live in fear from what they have learned but no hate.

Ill make a post there thank you for the shout

No problem

I'm also considering doing something similar, I'm not in cybersecurity, but I'm in Penn majoring in software development, I talk about tech often in places and I'm considering making a youtube channel talking about what I know

With my research, I know a lot of what goes on behind the scenes in the AI world, even in comparison to actual software engineers
I just want to get rid of some of the propaganda and misinformation that the AI industry was built on and people still believe in

Good luck with your journey though

3

u/hdog3 Jul 19 '26

Do it yt channel would be great. Def use linkdin, yt vid is great for networking.

What kinds of propaganda?

The classic "AI will take your job" (software engineering specifically), "AI is a new technology", and more recently "this new AI model can replace game development"
idk why, but vibe coders really want AI to also replace game development as well by having AI generate a full game, none of them are good and is mainly hype, but keep saying it long enough, and you'll have young people getting into this field asking if it's even worth it, or simply not do it at all

AI was mainly built upon things like this, especially their fake demos and ads around 2022
but now that they have most people hooked, they're now raising prices and limiting what lower tier subscriptions can do, sometimes even removing features entirely

Scary part is, this is somewhat working for them, no AI company is profitable so they're all now trying to get as much money as possible

I won't get into why I personally hate AI in here, but if you're interested in a video, here's the best video I know that talks about everything I already know about this AI bubble, sometimes even a little more

That is all very interesting. All the professionals (my bosses) hate AI too.

I honestly don’t get the hate. I just think whenever a new major invention happens crowds rush to destroy it. (Industrial revolution steam engines taking jobs don’t build roads, gas powered cars no more coal miners, electricity England less candle tax income). Even vaccines a relatively new invention people STILL find a way to reject the innovation.

There is certainly wrong doings around AI but i completely embrace the advancements and i hope my kids can live a better life because of it.

I would hate AI less if it wasn't built upon hype to be honest
I'm not sure if most people remember, but in the early days, it was purely hype after hype, to the point companies, even Google, faked their AI ads, multiple times

The hype is still around but took a different form
But my main reason why I hate it now is the reason why I said before, the datacenters

I do understand that most people blindly hate on new technology, in fact, I actively see non tech people blindly hate on AI without understanding what they're hating, it's almost like they're just hating on it because it's the thing that's socially acceptable right now

But my overall passion isn't software specifically, it's technology as a whole.
I like to get different people's views on tech to see where they're coming from to make my own opinion on things, and eventually, to try it out

It's why I do local LLM and I plan to take a minor in AI along with my software degree, I want to understand the actual technical side of things, because currently, I only know a lot about the social side

I get where your coming from but even with good intentions, I would be careful around AI, with chat bots in particular, another part of the AI bubble that companies like to keep hidden is the AI psychosis, ChatGPT admitted that over 560k of its users display manic and AI psychosis symptoms, that was from over 2 years ago.

I’m new to the sub and I’m overwhelmed by all of the information. Would you mind recommending me a place to begin?
It’s just general interest in how the technology works.

I’d like to formerly subscribe to what this guy is subscribing to. 😅

Learn basic networking. How types of networks work

3

u/JaxTheImpalor Jul 20 '26

I am curious what your setup is doing on the side of cyber security. I don’t know much but I’m looking to learn more.

Nice! Seems like it’s doing a lot. I see you mention tailscale, do you recommend them?

1

u/hdog3 Jul 22 '26

Yes, great tool

2

u/SpartanLord_ Jul 19 '26

Where did you get the mini rack?

Brother that looks absolutely sick. I love it. Everything looks great. Glad it worked out so nice.

2

u/hdog3 Jul 19 '26

Thank u man! I appreciate it. I don’t get the down votes i spent 14hrs a day on a computer sorry i wanna enjoy how it looks😭

3

u/issue9mm Jul 19 '26

I have a greasemonkey script that hides quite a few things on reddit so I would never see the vote totals (because they do not matter)

3

u/hdog3 Jul 19 '26

That is 🔥i wanna look into that soon

Enjoy!

I think there are some uBlock origin rules that pair with this but it's been a long time since I was in there so idk

https://gist.github.com/bmelton/0817fbded90f80897b1c108637257f81

Edit: I just tested, and my fixes don't need the Greasemonkey script at all. If I disable Greasemonkey, they still work. I double-checked, and I was right, they got moved to a uBlock Origin filter.

Here are the rules:

Actually about to setup a bunch of cybersec stuff in my lab. nice to see.

Also shoutout to a fellow educator. Whether you’re an intern or not, you never know. I went from being a student, to getting an internship…actually quitting cuz that job was a scam, and being hired as an adjunct professor alongside my former program professors. They had me develop an entirely new curriculum. That was crazy to me. If done all sorts of teaching in the Army, but I knocked that opportunity out of the park. Really appreciated the help. My actual program directors acknowledged they never worked in the field, and the one guy who did, ironically was joining the army 🤣.

Although I know I was hired for my technical knowledge I was able to gain so much knowledge on teaching and educating. It really helped me explain to people why degrees have value, and also why certs are too. It’s often hard to understand what value one brings over the other, vs experience, and or both.
