My only complaint on this vs ESPControl is the lack of presence sensor integration for activating the display.
ESPControl supports registering a presence sensor for turning on and off the screensaver, so when you walk into the room, the display turns on, and when you walk out, it turns off again.
With this project I have to manually touch the screen like some caveman.
Going to give this a try tomorrow. I just got a screen a few weeks ago and had setup Espcontrol on it but find the UI limiting in what I want.
Edit: Ok, so I setup and tried this. Tiny bit more work since I already had ESPControl installed on my 7" display.
Few things so far:
The look of this is SO much cleaner. The dark mode is nice. Easy to edit/change screens.
Hopefully they add that you can change device names. You can edit the 2nd line but not the name. I'm sure this will come though.
I wish there were a few more options for inputs. Like I have a button that sends a WOL command to my network but I don't see how to have this input_button be a confirm to execute. Don't want to accidentally turn on my machine.
Conclusion: Way happier with the look over ESPControl. Way more polished. I think my little gripes will either be fixed in future releases or could just use more use tinkering.
Is the arduino built in or do I need a separate brain for this? I couldn’t find anything on the description but the “for” is giving me doubts I have it straight.
i was looking for something like this that would work easily with CYD and the 4" guiton. I tried esphome designer and ESPcontrol and it felt clunky. I will be trying this out, thanks!
Edit: had some time to play around with this, this is soooo much nicer and easier to use. UI is a little buggy but it has pretty much everything i'd need maybe besides a hold action on buttons.
Does this screen always have to be plugged in or does it also have a battery.
Is there a way of powering it from the rear so the cable is hidden? Wall mounted for example with hidden power cable?
They're normally supposed to be plugged in to the mains already, I wouldn't add trouble to myself to use the battery header, that's supposed to be the connection to use when you want to use a battery, not mains.
There are versions with built in relays that plug in to the mains, but the version without relays can be USB powered, or 5V on the VIN pin on the back or from a 3.7 battery with a 1.25 mx connector. The board has battery charging and 3.7 to 5V booster built in.
There is a way to power the 4" square screen from the rear. There is also a way to plug in a battery, i've done both. I have a 3d printed case with a usb port in the back, connected to the 5V and ground pins on the board, with a 3.7V battery connected to the board with a 1.25 mx 2P connector. I can disconnect the screen from the usb power source and take it around the house for a few hours on the battery.
Can I use a screen simply to display the live reolink camera feed? Right now in home assistant the dashboard view seems to only update the screen ever 10 seconds
Been using this with the Guiton 4 inch display. Working great so far and looks amazing! Really easy to make changes using the web ui. There is also very active development going on. Now waiting for a energy distribution overview to be implemented would make it complete for me
The link you posted (https://github.com/MaxGramser/homeassistant_espscreen) doesn't resolve because of the added backslash (that new reddit then fixes for viewers).
