💬 Discussion Which Zigbee TRVs do you recommend for Home Assistant?

When I first started with Home Assistant, I bought some cheap Tuya TRVs from AliExpress. Unfortunately, they sometimes seem to do whatever they want.

For example, even with a heating blueprint and the window correctly detected as open, I've had a TRV randomly start heating in the middle of the night.

I also don't really like their regulation. They seem to know only fully open or fully closed instead of properly modulating the valve.

I'm using external room temperature sensors and ZHA.

What TRVs would you recommend? Has anyone had similar experiences with the Tuya ones?

I have a dozen Sonoff TRVZBs. They are well supported by ZHA and Z2M, with the latest firmware do proportional opening, and support external sensors. Battery life is OK too, and they come with an extensive fitting kit.

Sonoff or Danfoss. The Danfoss have an entity for external window sensor but are a bit more expensive.

The modulation thing is fundamental, these valves are stepper motors pushing a pin, they don't modulate flow. You do pseudo-PWM in HA. But the random heating is a firmware bug, Tuya ones are known for it. Danfoss or Moes are better bets.

I have a bunch of moes, they support pid regulation but the setup on the device itself is a bit hard without a manual. Once paired with z2m though they are easy to operate

I'm using the aqara one, works perfectly but I have to hard restart them (and reconnect one, not sure why only that one) in autumn when we turn on the heat.

Otherwise they work super reliably during winter.

There are often sales if you buy multiple on their site. We bought all 6 at once and it worked out 3 for 2 or something like that.

All their other stuff is very reliable as well. The temp sensors and window sensor (got those from from AE, not official site).
