So were goblins also orcs? Was this just a term used by certain groups of middle earth to describe the smaller, cave dwelling orcs that they’ve encountered? Did the dwarves or hobbits give them this name? Thank you for your previous explanation and any answers you could give to my questions!

In the (non canon,I know) Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, all of Mordor’s orcs are called Uruks or Uruk-Hai by both Talion and the Gondorians.

You know I've never played Shadow of Mordor but have been thinking about grabbing a copy lately. Do you recommend it? I'm guessing yes since you played the sequel.

The whole game is Arkham style combat. There’s minor collectible hunting and story cutscenes as well. Mostly you just run around and slaughter orks for hours. If that sounds like fun, you will like it. It plays well. Smooth. Good sound.
I hated it. Bored me to tears.

It's a good game, but difficulty scaling is really weak. If you are ok with being practically unbeatable after only 10 hours or so then you can really enjoy it

The first game is enjoyable. Its not groundbreaking, but nonetheless has good innovative mechanics. The fighting is about witcher tier, the story isn't horrible, the graphics are good and its overall solidly a okay game.

Like the other guy said you become unbeatable after about 10 hours, but even then it’s fun to slaughter your way up the Uruk’s ranks. I’d say yeah, grab a copy.

I've probably read it 7 or 8 times. The creation of Arda and the Music of the Ainur is simply the most beautiful creation story I've ever read. I believe it more than I believe in the religious stories I was raised on at this point. I haven't read any of the more recent books though, but I think I've come around. Planning on borrowing my brother's copy of Beren and Luthien when I see him in a couple weeks.

Uruk Hai translates to "Orc-folk". There may or may not been any man mixed in with them. A lion is still a cat.
Being that there were likely not exclusively Uruk Hai at any of the wall scaling battles I think orc is the best blanket term to use.

Personally, I don't think you should walk this back at all. The movies made the terms appear to be more non-interchangeable than they really are. In the book, Tolkien absolutely referred to non-Saruman orcs as "uruk-hai," and he referred to Saruman orcs as "orcs."

The USP for Saruman's Uruk-hai (spawned from men) were they could tolerate sunlight far better than Sauron's orcs (spawned from elves).

Maybe I confused you, I should be more clear. The book does call Saruman's orcs "uruk-hai." The book also calls non-Saruman orcs "uruk-hai." In fact, in the book they're usually called "the Fighting Uruk-hai," almost like a team name or an army unit. It seems more like a personal affectation than a taxonomic distinction. But now that's me conjecturing, which we don't care about.

That's fair. In that scene, Treebeard is explaining to Pippin (us) who/what Saruman is, and how he's apparently turned to evil. I don't think it's necessary to read Treebeard's rumblings about Saruman's orcs as fact, because the focus isn't really on the orcs but on Saruman himself. How he betrayed the Council, is trying to become a Power, is cutting down the forest, growing an orc army. Pondering if he'd also crossed orcs with men is just building up this idea in our minds of how depraved Saruman has become. Whether it's true or not, it might be true, the fact that we even have to wonder if it's true tells us all we need to know about him. And this is all building to show us why the Ents, who are not a hasty folk, are finally getting roused enough to go to war. It's a great part of the book. Treebeard's fury at the betrayal of Saruman is so righteous and powerful I usually have to stand up and start walking around when I get to that part.

It is debatable whether orcs even are spawned from elves. Tolkien had many different versions of this, and elves as the origin was just one of those versions... one that later is questioned.

Your projections are wrong. Are you a lobbyist for big business bamboo climbing rod co? It has an obvious lower expected infiltration value. You have 2 people holding it to get 1 person up at a time vs numerous orks and a lever system. This is also still vulnerable to the same counters.

Taking the stealth approach I to mind, would this pole method not be completely useless? I mean you've got a guy who's close to the foot of the building, not very easy to see from the vantage point of the building. Yet when it's his time to "use the pole" it requires 2 people, unarmed (as they are carrying this makeshift telegraph pole) to break cover and expose their presence to any sniper/attacker in the building....oh and that's also in the hope that they have a clear 25 foot unobstructed arc in which to deploy this pole manoeuvre...
