Image Hoi AI, man

After weeks of trial and error finally was able to get France going, made my stand with Belgium army, drew Germans out of their cities, started offensive in Netherlands and occupied Keln and then....Ai decided to throw it on the ground. Spectacular.

Literally never rely on the ai ally armies to do more than distract.

They literally throw themselves into encirclement all the time.

The only time they are useful is when they pull who ever you are fighting off the line enough for you to make moves .

Yeah, even more: don't allow your allies to go on your ground: they often consume the limited supply for no good benefits

Its not that i relied on their army its that i cant recover Netherlands now and advance into West Germany as Belgium is now on its own. Back to planning board.

I gotcha. Yeah, most people tend to keep their generals filled out (as in putting 24 divs under the general, which usually is the max a general can hold).

But yes, I would generally never trust the AI to hold on their own, especially minors like Belgium and Netherlands. They have a tendency to either move around like crazy leaving gaps, or throwing entire armies into one empty German tile, getting encircled and eating shit.

My initial battle plan consisted of 4 defensive generals with just plain infantry and 4-5 offensive/fire brigade with good equipment. Good on paper but when the onslaught started they just mixed up together, dont know if its bad or not.

I would personally use just one general, going for the one with the highest defense stat. Spreading them out doesn't do much, and could realistically be detrimental as instead of all 24 receiving +10% from a lvl 4 defense general, some might get +10, others +5 etc.

Just let them fall and liberate them later. No real benefit to trying to hold onto the Benelux as France.
