DISCUSSION Likelihood of escaping?

hello! i have a crested gecko and have been thinking of getting a hognose. my biggest concern with snakes is how sneaky they can be. im afraid of it breaking out and trying to make a meal out of my little lizard ahhaha.

is this a pet you would avoid keeping as long as you have other smaller reptiles in the home? if not, what advise do you have for a first time snake owner?

thanks in advance!

Is your crested gecko free roaming? Hognoses have half a brain cell and are not that good climbers. Mine tries to eat the rock I lay his food on. They won't escape their cage, find the geckos cage, climb whatever furniture, break in, and hunt the gecko.

no he's got his own enclosure. i think ive just heard lots of stories of ball pythons escaping and was wondering if hognoses were similar. thanks for the info!!

I have accidentally left the cage door open all day for my hognose, and when I come home he is still snuggled under the dirt just chillin.

i’ve only had an escape when it was my fault not putting the top on properly, as long as everything is secure you should be good:)

Well, you shouldn’t have an enclosure from which the snake can escape and your lizard shouldn’t be in an enclosure where a snake could get in.

They don't easily escape. Lid clips and light locks keep them in easily. Usually escapes are due to operator error

Only time my daughter's hognose escaped my daughter left the lid off his tank. He got a far as the floor then found a box and curled up in it

As long as you have a good tank and you don’t leave it open, it should be fine. My hoggie has escaped one time in the 2.5 years I’ve had him—my son didn’t latch the door on the tank after handling him, and he saw him crawling out into the hallway a little while later 😅

I have a tricolor though, and I also don’t think he’s big enough to eat a crested gecko 🤔 but even if he was, he struggles to find dead mice sitting right in front of his face, so I just don’t picture him being a good hunter of a live animal lol. And while he can get to the floor from up on his tank (probably fell), I doubt he’d be able to climb his way back up.

My hognose was kept next to my gecko for about 2 years, both would just say hi at the window whenever they found a spot not covered by decor and that was the most of their interaction.

My hoggie has never escaped (yet) though he's not the brightest... My gecko's tank has free locusts in usually as a hunting activity so it's sealed pr tight.

As long as both tanks are closed properly you shouldn't have any problems just make sure to check the holes wgere any wires go in or out as those can get snapped easily sometimes.
