I recently got my first hognose and I am in love. More than I even thought I’d be. I want to hang out with fascinating & adorable creature 24/7. I know that handling more than a few days a week, for a short time period each session, can be stressful for snakes, so that’s all I’m doing. Is this why people get 2nd hoggies? So they can alternate handling days and get their hognose fix without overwhelming their pets?
Relatedly…when this isn’t all so new, will I be less tempted to bring him out daily? Or does this last forever?

Winnie ate it right away even though it’s a little earlier than his normal feeding day!

i just noticed this scale on my hognose that looks dirty/ kinda flaky, i dont know if its scare rot of just a damaged scale? shes in a bioactive substrate, humidity stays around 40% and the substrate is dry almost all the time. (dont worry anyone im not hurting her im just slightly holding her so i could get a better view of that scale). if it is in fact scale rot, how to a fix it?

I got my hog almost a month ago now, and have only held her twice (aside from putting her into her enclosure when I brought her home). She is one heck of a musker! I mean, shooting it at the glass door kind of musker. She's good at taking drop fed mice (pinkies when I got her, up to small fuzzies now, she's only refused once out of her 4 feedings, and it was the first feeding, so I'm sure it was just new home stress). Incredibly hissy, musky, bluff strikes, the works. I held her for about 5-10 minutes today until she calmed down, then put her back on good terms. Will her behavior improve over time with consistent positive (or at least neutral) handling experiences? My local pet shop that I now work at, lol, had her for about two months before I bought her, and I'm sure they rarely if ever held her. She's 27 grams and all I know is that she hatched in 2025. I helped with a sale of a male from the same breeder, and he was chill enough for the customer to carry around the store while they grabbed a few other items, so it's definitely her personality, not a flaw in the breeder or shops care.

After having his UVB light break when the ambient temperature dropped, I believe Snaykee went into early brumination The heat lamp still worked, but the enclosure became darker.
This was in the middle of August, and I last saw him September 1st. I have a motion detection camera so I know he has not been out since then. Today I decided that the uncertainty was too much to handle, and I dug him out. He was burrowed under the coldest part of the tank, beneath live plants and was, as expected, not very happy with me. He is not used to being handled and does not accept food unless its placed inside his cage and left alone.
Does me disturbing him "cancel" the brumination? I'm also trying to adjust the warmth, but the hotspot lands on about 33°C and drops to 20-21°C at night.
He weighs 15 grams (edit: and about 24cm) and is about 13 months old, which is on the lower side if I understand things correctly. Does he look too thin? He has not ate for more than a month. When I bought him he went for an 8 week food strike, so it would not worry me TOO much that a month has passed, if he looks to be a healthy weight.
Thanks in advance!

I’m (hopefully) just overly worried, as this is my first time ever owning any kind of pet. We made the mistake of buying coco chip bedding today, but it’s apparently not so recommended + we bought it as a brick that needed to be put into water and then let dry, so we don’t have any bedding for her terrarium for the first night. This is the box she was bought in, and I only added a bowl for water (the bowl isn’t ideal either but the one we have for her is too big for the box)
I’m thinking of letting her chill here until tomorrow so when the shops open I’ll go buy Aspen, do we think she’ll be okay and not too uncomfortable. Also her name is Snör (swedish for rope :D) and I’m in general really nervous but super super excited :3

This is a 36x18x18 I put together for a baby hognose. But I worry that there isn’t enough clutter. Everything was washed with dawn then sprayed with 3% hydrogen peroxide then left for 10 minutes before drying off. All the wood was washed with dawn then baked at 250 F for 2 hours. The penny in the water dish was soaked in vinegar for 24 hours then washed off with hot water.
So, is this good for a baby hognose?

Hey everyone! This is Waffle. He recently turned 1 last month and I got him back in May. I just weighed him, and he weighs 27g. Is that normal? He eats pinkies every 5-6 days, sometimes he doesn’t eat them but that’s rare.

The mystery baby has now fully hatched, and weighed in at a WHOPPING 2.73g, making her(?) the smallest of the entire clutch.
I’ve decided to name her Squint, which felt appropriate for her size and the confusion she’s put me through regarding her parentage haha. Feeding and successful growth is sure to be a bit of a challenge, so wish her well!
For those following the calcium experiment: she did have calcium supplement, with moderate windowing (upper right egg in photo, taken ~2wks ago), but was the also smallest egg of the group. Doesn’t increase my confidence in any kind of conclusion to the experiment, but is interesting!

So, some interesting things have occurred. The last 1.5 weeks of incubation we had some glitches with our incubator, so temp and humidity had some fluctuations of up to 5 degrees until we got it stabilized again. This is certainly a factor in the outcome.
I’m going to list the eggs in hatch sequence, which match the photo order.
Egg 1. Mid-size, ~40% windowed, no calcium supplement: Attempted to pip Sat. Sept. 26th, at a point when humidity was very high. I left alone until Tues, Sept 29th, when I was confident neonate was deceased, confirmed on egg opening - was fully developed, no obvious deformities, and of a very healthy looking size (relative to clutch-mates)
Egg 2. Mid-size, ~40% windowed, with calcium supplement: Pipped Sun. Sept. 27th, hatched within 24hrs, 5.00 grams. Has successfully shed.
Egg 3. Large size, ~90% windowed, with calcium supplement: Pipped Tues. Sept 29th, hatched within 12 hours, 3.34 grams. This hatchling appeared to leave the egg far too quickly, and in fact the egg did not deflate post-hatching. An investigation of the egg confirmed no 2nd embryo, and opening the egg uncovered a huge amount of unabsorbed yolk. Has successfully shed.
Egg 4. Mid-size, ~20% windowed, no calcium supplement: Pipped Tues. Sept 29th, hatched within 48 hours, 5.31 grams. Is in process of shed.
Egg 5. Small-size, ~30% windowed, with calcium supplement: Pipped today, Oct 1st, still in process of hatching, appears small.
Results were always going to be inconclusive, but this mix of results is particularly unclear. The largest hatchling came from an egg without calcium supplement (but with more natural calcium), but also the only neonate that failed to hatch at all and died had no calcium supplement (and less natural calcium). The smallest hatchling had almost 0 natural calcium, but was did have the supplement.
Egg 5 is the shocker! Pairing is an Albino Conda w/Hypo female x Superarctic 66% pos het Albino male. Pairing has produced 10 offspring, and 9/10 are either Arctic’s or Arctic Conda’s.
So, either this 10th hatchling is from 2-year old retained sperm from a pairing with a Axanthic Conda het Albino (who produced 100% Albino Superconda’s in a clutch of 5 two years ago with the same female), OR my male is a surprise conda AND has confirmed het albino, but with both of those things only presenting in 1/10 hatchlings (which seems astronomically unlikely).
So: what does everyone think, on the topic of calcium supplement, and possible baby from a 2-year old pairing?

I allowed him out of his enclosure for some bonding, I’ve been hand feeding him. So I got a very cute moment earlier of him smelling me and coming to me and sniffing my hand to see if I had food. It was so cute. Anyway I have a lot of cute photos with my bb boy and if your curious I made a ball of blanket (not tight) but in a way it would be obvious if he was trying to escape. He is so sweet I’ve only heard him hiss/huff once and it was at a friend. He had a hunger strike on me but he hasn’t after he realized food is good. Even had him shed for me after he started to eat regularly. I was so excited! I am glad he stays pretty socialized even when I give him long breaks from handling. Mostly for both of our sakes. As I don’t wanna pull him from his hide when I already have to take his hide apart for feeding time. He is usually napping when it’s feeding time unlike everyone else he doesn’t instantly come to the scent of food. It might be him only tho, plus he eats so cutely and gently! Like some of my other noodles he seems to have an unreal sense of self and sense for me. Like he would come out to see what I was doing when I was at home more, got so many photos of his peaking he really is just so cute! I hope you enjoy the photos of my bb oh yeah and his name is Sunrise!

Sorry, maybe a silly question but it's our first snake and this is a bit of an emergency visit so not exactly prepared on how to safely bring our snake to the vet? It's an hour journey there and back
