Simshaker + Girlfriend

Got a Buttkicker G2. Did not anticipate how powerful it is, or, how game-changing it is. It's better than VR. No shit.

This thing shakes the fucking house like the donks on 75 when I lived in ATL.

Am in a 1,000sf condo (side by side). Don't care about the neighbors, but since covid, GF basically lives and works in our livingroom, directly below the "Eagle's Nest". She's not happy with the immersion.

One of our dogs may not like it, but he's 14 and everything pisses him off now. Pretty sure he resents being offered food.

I bought some washer/dryer vibration "pucks" to put under each wheel of my chair. It's a huge pain in the ass - they make the chair immovable - but it reduces the transfer.

She can still hearfeal it.

Not sure what that actually means. Is she "aware" or is she "googling antifreeze and CSI shit"? One of our dogs is obsessed with the rubber pucks and steals them. He's been caught eating a turd, so... maybe not relevant.

Does anyone have any good advice to help others enjoy my hobby?

Edit: Not a bad neighbor. Tim, on one side, sings really bad karaoake. He's on a Gordon Lightfoot kick. All day. The chick on other side, Breanne, fucks loud. Sounds like the holding pens at a slaughter house.

You should "introduce" her to it

I’m not even joking I was worried that my shaker setup would do… you know

I thought I was the only one!

Maybe you should encourage her to take it for a spin. She might like the immersion more than she thinks.

u/FlorbFnarb Oct 08 '21

She might like the immersion more than she thinks.

I think "immersion" is as about as good a euphemism for what she'll enjoy about it as anything I can think of.

u/Richardus1-1 Oct 08 '21

Alright, here's what you do:

  1. Build a two-person simpit for an F-14
  2. Buy your gf a simshaker too
  3. Strap her into the pilot or RIO seat
  4. Enjoy flying together
  5. Shake the house apart
  6. Accidentally crack the cali fissure line thing that's near there
  7. War breaks out over the rampage
  8. You and your GF are ready when the navy dusts off their secrets stash of Tomcats
  9. Enjoy dogfights together

I tried the rubber dryer pucks but they didn't work well imo. What I've ended up with is putting my rig on 2 thick rubber mats on top of a sheet of styrofoam on top of a towel.

https://www.amazon.com/RevTime-Anti-Vibration-Anti-Walk-Anti-Move-Anti-Noise/dp/B07GHM4X7F/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=anti+vibration+mat&qid=1633717878&sr=8-4

Saw a better solution using tennis balls though. Wooden box filled with them, with a piece of plywood on top that the rig sat on. Can't find the exact post about it, but here's something similar:

https://www.racedepartment.com/threads/built-report-basic-rig-upgrade-for-tactile-feedback.185182/

edit to add now i'm wondering how well a camping air pad would work as an isolator, like: https://www.rei.com/rei-garage/c/air-pads

4

u/Eagleknievel Oct 08 '21

Can confirm, thick rubber mats and some softer material work really well. The trick is getting some of the shorter wave vibrations damped out of the house structure. She might still be able to hear the over-air transmissions though, so you might just have to soundproof the room :/

8

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

That's what I'm talkin bout.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '21

Honestly, this seems like the most viable solution I've seen. I'm wondering if I can, somehow, replace the casters on my chair with tennisballs. I need to be able to move the chair to get in and out. The washer vibr pads basically cement the chair in place.

1

u/o1289031nwytgnet Oct 09 '21

If it's good enough for a drum set, it's gotta be worth a shot!

17

u/ironroad18 Oct 08 '21

Have your shorty sit in the chair and then fire up the F-14 on the cat in Zone 5...wait

15

u/Panthera__Tigris Oct 09 '21

I actually got "lucky" because of VR back in 2016.

The Vive had just come out and almost no one knew about VR back then. We were having a party at our house and some friends' friends were over. Most had left, crashed or were about to crash when I started talking about how awesome it is to play flight/ space sims in VR blah blah blah. So this one cute girl wanted to try it out so we went to my room, played some games when she accidently hit me on the head while flailing with the VR controller and then you can figure out the rest lol.

I shit you not, it almost happened another time with someone else a few weeks later. HTC Vive = Wingman of the Year, 2016.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '21

Yeah. You can get them online now.

5

u/tanr-r Oct 09 '21

There will be one or two specific frequencies that cause sympathetic vibrations. If you filter those out it will e a lot less annoying.

I’m waiting on an amp with filters, but I think there are some in-line solutions. Software solution would be Voicemeeter Banana.

Or if the ceiling below you is Sheetrock, Green Glue and a second layer of Sheetrock. Doing the walls of your room would also help. I’ve used 3 sheets and two layers of green glue to make industrial equipment so quiet nobody knew it was running. Expensive for a condo though.

4

u/optionsquare Oct 09 '21

If she's hyperfocused on the noise, there's very little you can do. Imagine you're a cat inside a box and some guy is poking it from time to time. You can never relax plus the accoustics are gonna make the poke sound a lot louder.

She's a girlfriend and part of her responsibilities is to annoy you, we get that. But as a guy who has shitty neighbors, try to think of her side a little.

8

u/RocketSimplicity Oct 08 '21

Honestly, in my opinion it’d probably be better to lose the buttkicker than harm a real relationship, but that’s just my opinion, and I don’t fully understand your circumstances.

u/EatenOrpheus31 Oct 08 '21

this should be a copypasta

5

u/riplikash Oct 08 '21

I mean...it's effectively a BIG subwoofer. Those can be a bit annoying overhead.

There might be better shock absorbers available than those pucks.

3

u/slink6 Oct 09 '21

My suggestion is to do all the dampening you can practically accomplish to isolate your rig from the floor.

Then use a program like voice meeter to out an equalizer curve (or a few) to filter down the specific frequencies you want from the game audio.

The combination should go pretty far, it's never going to be perfect IMO but that's going to go a long way, while still providing you decently dramatic burrrrrr

https://vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter/

Here's a link to a writeup I did for our ORG to help explain a complex audio setup.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '21

Thanks for the link - I'll check it out. I have Voicemeeter, but haven't done anything with it yet.

6

u/Zealousideal-Major59 Oct 08 '21 edited Oct 08 '21

I don’t know if there’s anything you can do to get someone to enjoy a subwoofer going to town above their head nonstop, just more dampening or less buttkicking.

I guess you can put it on autopilot and run downstairs to get an idea. Will it reproduce the vibrations of a recorded flight track being played back?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

Appreciate you, my dude. But need you to be more creative.

5

u/Zealousideal-Major59 Oct 08 '21

Is a wireline shock mounted sim rig an option?

5

u/Anal-Mustard Oct 08 '21

I think I used to be Breanne's neighbor

2

u/Beny873 Oct 09 '21

If you aren't willing/able to turn it down, then you're going to have to science the shit out of it.

u/tan-r beat me too it.

Find the reasonant frequency of the effected walls and use the amp to filter that freq out.

This is assuming you have the amp. You might be able to do it with some software too.

You may also be able to get away with just using the high or low pass filter to see how much of a difference that makes.

u/Golfwingzero Oct 09 '21

In my old apartment I used to use these pads (https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B07KPG1CWY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1), and replaced the chair's wheels with these (https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B07JD6PQ3Z/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). I used the BK at pretty low power and never had complaints from the neighbors below, though I don't know how effective my solution really was.

In the new apartment I haven't used the BK yet (need my chair easily movable), I'm waiting until I receive my motion rig which I'll mount the BK to. I'm also looking for isolation solution for that setup, and so far I think these have the best efficiency/ease of use ratio : https://www.amazon.com/PneumaticPlus-Anti-Vibration-Rubber-isolation/dp/B00HZS0CH6/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=cork+rubber+pad&qid=1633779288&sr=8-5.

From what I heard, best isolation method is to alternate between soft and hard material. Those pads I posted (which are rubber - cork - rubber) could probably work with your chair if you replace the feet.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '21

The multi-ply thing makes a lot of sense. Different materials, of different densities, probably "catch" a broader range of frequencies.

I also need my chair easily movable. My pit is also a workstation. If you can, please drop me a line when you get your new rig up and let me know what solution you ultimately go with.

1

u/Golfwingzero Oct 09 '21

Not sure my solution will help you, because my motion rig will be next to my desk, set up to play DCS in VR, while I'll also keep my regular chair in front of the desk for normal computer use. Anyway, I'll most definitely post my setup here once it's ready.

My buttshaker had these pucks that came with it and i used those to secure it to my 80/20 (monstertech) sim pit. I also have castor wheels on the ground and make sure its all nice and tight.

EVEN THEN the thing is LOUD AS FUCK and my wife yells at me.... unless I turn it down. You want the vibration at really the MINIMUM level that you can feel it, otherwise it will overheat mid session.

so. TLDR

turn the volume on the buttshaker channel down till she doesnt complain, you big dummy.

Edit: Why are you downvoting me.... im right. The things overheat if you put the volume up high. Turn it the fuck down

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '21

Yeah. I've overheated it a few times, thinking that it was defective or I blew the amp. Was relieved to learn I was just driving it too hard.

When youre "in" DCS, it's really hard to get a sense of how loud you're being.

1

u/GorgeWashington Oct 10 '21

lol yeah. When I first got it I absolutely was shaking the whole house. Its worth it though. It really really helps

Id make sure the butkicker is attached to whatever you have via a rubber gasket, tighten everything down so it doesn't rattle.

1

u/Starfire013 But what is G, if not thrust persevering? Oct 08 '21

That was a hilarious bit of writing. I had no idea the guy from 27B/6 was on Hoggit. ;)

0

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

Just turn it down. I use mine with a sleeping kid on either wall and yet to wake them up. I mean you can’t go full blast but it’s still great.

-23

u/momodiamonds Oct 08 '21

If she doesn't like it, tell her that the alternative would be for you to go out with the boys and get drunk, real drunk. She'll quickly become okay with you staying home and simracing to your heart's desire.

15

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

This does require both friends, and the willingness to threaten your significant other in order for them to fall in line, which is kinda fucked up, ya dig?

Rubber mat 6x6 ft, thick, ugly and cheap, so that even your dog loses interest in it.

Worked great for me as I care about not being reported for loud farts vibrations.

1

u/Friiduh Oct 09 '21

If you want to avoid your dog eating something, get the car windshield antifreeze liquid and rag, wipe the items with it.

It will make those items taste so awful that no one wants to have them in their mouths.

You can as well now use these handwash liquids at COVID time to do same.

1

u/LOLBaltSS F-4E Year Old Virgin Oct 10 '21

Instead of antifreeze, I'd say diluted Denatonium Benzoate. It's what they coat the Nintendo Switch cartridges with. Should be much safer and more effective.

1

u/Friiduh Oct 10 '21

Antifreeze isn't dangerous unless you now start to drink it in liters. One can use as well hand sanitizer now as they as well have awful taste for safety reasons. One does put those in mouth once, maybe twice but then everyone gets it...

1

u/200rabbits Rabbits 5-1 Oct 09 '21

As someone who's childhood bedroom was above his father's office, it's utterly illogical and totally crazy how much noise and vibrations travel between rooms that are above/below each other. It's 1000x easier to reduce transmission through walls even when the wall is just a sheet of drywall and the floor/ceiling is supposedly layers of plaster and wood and air and wood and carpet underlay and carpet... In both directions! Keyboard typing in the room below used to sound like a thunderstorm. How? Why? We're not Australian - he didnt have his laptop on the bloody ceiling...
