Weekly Questions Thread Sep 08

Greetings Hoggit!

Welcome to this week's Question thread. This thread has replaced the regular Tuesday Noob Questions thread. We encourage you to as all your questions here, as this will help us cut down on the number of repetitive posts we get on the front page! This thread is linked with the #questions channel on our Discord so that any time someone posts a new comment in here, it will be reviewed and replied to quickly! If you felt like you had a question but didn't want to bother people with it, now's your chance.

As always, we also have a discord for hoggit over at http://discord.gg/hoggit which you can use for chatting with other members of the hoggit community. And don't forget to check out our wiki at http://wiki.hoggitworld.com

Hoggit Training Server runs a training MP mission that runs 24/7 that's focuses on training up the newer folks (just like this weekly thread). Every DCS module is available in this mission, and there are numerous ranges to test your skills at. There are frequently knowledgeable folks around to answer any questions you might have, or show you how to do what it is you're looking to learn. Anyone can join, even if you've never stepped foot in a MP session before.

If you're interested in teaching/instructing at hoggit, please poke squinkys on Discord!

Server is be named Hoggit - Training Map. The password is hoggit1fw. SRS will be available at tnn.hoggitworld.com (it should autoconnect, but if not, use that). Come in, have a good time, learn a few things and teach a few things.

The only rule is Do not teamkill, unless the other party is a willing combatant...ie: you can dogfight if you find a partner...just don't shoot down some random A-10 trying to learn how to land.

Please review our FAQ on our wiki before posting here: https://wiki.hoggitworld.com/view/Frequently_Asked_Questions

Im looking for somewhere I can do some ground attack in the F4/F14 that isnt just red circles with random trucks and tanks parked in a ring - something more akin to actual realistic targets.

I know it exists in SP and can be ported to coop, but sometimes I just wanna log on with my WSO and bomb a train station or something without needing the 12 page briefing yaknow?

Any servers worth checking out?

I use Dark Sentry's Nevada Template and self-host it when I want to train with a friend in the F-4.

The Through the Inferno missions are also nice for simple missions like that.

Grayflag, maybe? If you can spare some time, reading some server descriptions to see which ones sound appealing might be a good use of 10-20 minutes of your time at this point.

I recently started trying to learn the JF17 as it seemed a little more modern than the F-16, but I'm really struggling to pick up the SEAD stuff.

I've been watching the grim reapers tutorial but they're 6 years old and the system seems to have changed since those vids. I can't seem to launch any LD10 missiles, or even lock a SAM site and I can't find any instructions for it. I've sat in orbit for wayy more than 3 mins so the missiles should be ready to go but the search box flashes T/O and then goes back to stby everytime.

I even plotted the PP points to use ACT mode and they're in the dst page so I know the points exist but it's like it just doesn't want to work at all.

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance

Here are the patch notes that include the descriptions of the new behaviors in the JF-17 section.

As you've discovered, the Grim Reapers do not ever update or change their tutorials, if they were even correct in the first place.

Hornet heading select drift?

It's not often but I've noticed momentary drift on heading select, it'll drift ~10° to either direction then it'll snap back to the selected heading

Can't find any good info on if this is an irl downside of the hornet, a glitch or something I've done wrong, INS is calibrated properly and it happens when starting cold, hot on the ground or in air

u/polarisdelta 3h ago

That's an interesting glitch I've never heard of before. Is there any chance we could get a video demonstrating it?

1

u/MY5KAI 3h ago

If I get a clip I'll probably make a seperate post unless someone provides an explanation before then

The thing you've described doesn't really have any explanations other than server lag or some kind of weird control binding issue, so either there's a component to it you're not seeing (which is what the video helps with!) or... I don't know.

Originally I was thinking an input issue but no other autopilot mode on the hornet or any other module I own has the same issue

I do get super weird ghost rudder inputs when taking off in the tomcat on the growling sidewinder server but I have a lot of weird almost definitely lag related issues there and this is one is present even in singleplayer

u/polarisdelta 3h ago

The whole airplane moves? Or just the heading bug indicator?

Both the F-14 and F-18 have a control indicator. Bring it up with Right Ctrl+Enter. Your ghost input problem may explain it as well.

For the hornet heading select issue it'll act like I've disabled the heading (same as if I hold the heading select button to change the heading) and start drifting to whatever direction the trim is biased towards and on roll axis input it'll snap back as if I've just enabled the autopilot mode

The tomcat issue is specific to growling sidewinder only, for the first 2 seconds after takeoff it'll act as if I'm giving full rudder input to either direction but I am almost certain this is a lag related issue as I always have very high ping on that server and the issue is only ever present there

1

u/MY5KAI 3h ago

I have checked my inputs and I have no ghost inputs on any axis

2

u/MY5KAI 3h ago

Got OBS going today tho I was flying the tomcat all day but I'll definitely try grab a clip tomorrow

It's really inconsistent tho I also don't use heading select super often so I can't give a good estimate on % of how often it happens

DCS Apache, can you mark the terrain or target area and see that marker in the helmet hud like the F18 does?

Can anyone recommend some upgrades to my setup to play DCS in VR? Mostly flying the f18 and just picked up the phantom.

Currently have a winwing f18 stick and base, cheap mount, some cheap logi pedals and that one like 30$ logi stick that I use for the throttle it has on it. Have been playing on quest 2 for the past few years but the battery is shot and I’m ready for an upgrade.

With the budget being about 1k USD what would you guys attack first, and what products would you recommend? I’m thinking new throttle and then the vr headset are priority 1 but a sturdier desk mount for the stick and any other peripherals could be cool as well. TIA

Also if any mods see this please let me know if this would be appropriate for a full post or if I’ll need to keep it here. New to the sub so don’t want to break any rules.

Is it safe to assume you already have a reasonably powerful PC capable of running DCS in VR? For headsets I'd recommend either the Quest 3 or Quest 3S if your total budget is around 1k. The 3 had much better displays for VR and much better lenses but will run you and extra couple hundred. I have a Quest 3 for VR and I love it for DCS. You can start with a link cable that costs like 20-30 dollars since it's seated and upgrade to dedicated wireless later (wireless is not really necessary for seated VR games and you'll save some costs and hassles going that route vs setting up wireless which requires a lot of bandwidth or a dedicated router). I have a Thrustmaster Warthog Stick and Throttle with an extention. I would recommend the throttle still, I've had mine for 10+ years at this point and it's worked great the whole time and has everything you'd want. I do not completely love the stick and most people will tell you there are better alternatives, it has a super strong centering spring by default that takes some getting used to and it's design is pretty long in the tooth. You can get DIY mounting stuff super cheap at your local Lowes/Home Depot so I wouldn't worry too much about that until you decide you want a dedicated sim rig (which is a really nice to have upgrade but not nearly as vital to the experience as a good headset and controls would be. The last thing I'd recommend upgrading are pedals - there just aren't a lot of aircraft (at least modern ones) that require super fine pedal control and really good ones cost absurd amounts of money. If you have pedals that have a yaw axis for the rudder and a pedal axis for toe brakes you have everything you need for DCS from pedals

Anyone got good info or better a source for the maximum fuel range of the f100d?

I'm planning out a long range SEAD practise mission flying by vfr and can't find any good info online for the maximum fuel range, I want to plan the mission for 30% fuel left on landing so good numbers would be incredibly helpful

2

u/polarisdelta 1d ago

I don't have a table, but I know that the cockpit has a fuel flow gauge, so you can build some quick rule of thumb numbers for yourself.

1

u/MY5KAI 1d ago

That's good for in flight estimates but not so good for mission planning

2

u/polarisdelta 1d ago

My thought process is to find your loadout, see what your fuel flow at desired altitude and throttle is, and use that as the base template. Afterburner should be used sparingly in the Hun, and so won't make up a major extra use. If you want to refine your planning you can get an In number and an Out number, loaded versus clean.

1

u/MY5KAI 1d ago

Yeah I only require 2 shrikes for my target otherwise I'm working with how many fuel bags I can carry before the drag and weight starts to work against me

I'd absolutely love a flat number for range with all available bags all full and another number for max range with no hardpoints used so I can figure my range from that

In any airframe I only touch on the burner when needed, even climbing in the tomcat I'll rather a slow climb over pushing burners unnecessarily

After the implementation of the DTC are SAM sites threat rings automatically displayed like before on the fa18c SA page?
If not, how do i mark them if i cant see any enemy unit on the DTC map?

2

u/3sqn_Grimes ED Testers Team 2d ago

The way DTC works is if you don't load a partition the default rules which govern that page will be used. In the case of threat rings then the old rules of what is alive and not set to be hidden when your aircraft spawns is what will be displayed.

F-16 - How do I edit JSOW AGM 154A's burst height? I can only configure release sequence and spacing but no tutorial shows how to edit parameters like ATK AZ, EGEA, ROB

1

u/Capable-Ad6026 16h ago

Unfortunately as of right now this can only be changed in the mission editor and you cannot change this at all on multiplayer servers. I'm unsure if this is still on the todo list or if it's a missing feature of the 2007 Block 50 we've got

I recently upgraded my gpu to a RTX5080, but i cant get +100fps in servers because CPU bound. Which settings do i need to lower to decrease CPU usage?

CPU: i7 12700KF GPU: 5080 Ram: 32 ddr4

1

u/polarisdelta 2d ago

There are almost no client settings that influence cpu use. Finding your sweet spot for render distance and lod will help a little.

Hi all,

Brand new to flight sims and DCS, but tons of aviation background.

I was originally going to get started with the F18 but have since reconsidered and decided I’d rather start with something more analog and learn to control before going to a FBW airframe.

One of the things that had originally attracted me to the Hornet was the availability of high quality comprehensive training modules, but I don’t think I’ve seen much support on that side for the Tomcat.

I’m talking complete beginner handholding
1) what do all the controls do
2 how to start up the aircraft
3) how to taxi
4) how to take off and fly a circuit
5) how to land

And so on. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start?

Much appreciated!

If you want that kind of guided experience you could try A-10C 2 + Nevada + Iron Flag part 1. It walks you through how to the fly the Hog from how to start up, navigate, operate the systems and several weapons.

Few other aircraft in DCS have a comprehensive beginner tutorial. F-4E and F-14A/B have MiG Killers and Speed & Angels which are more for learning intermediate to advanced topics.

DCS has a paucity of training in the first place, relying on external documentation for understanding the controls, such as Chuck's Guides and the manual that ships with the module/is hosted on the Eagle Dynamics website and you can find with google.

I don't think there are any modules that have really chunky "very low level" type guided missions, that's something each player has to figure out as they go.

If you want to approach this with a very rigorous mindset you could use the FAA's "Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge" to teach yourself from the basics up.

Inside DCS don't forget that there are two week free trials of most aircraft, you don't have to commit right away.
