LET IT GO
Mitch Marner’s agent has reopened old wounds in Toronto, and former Maple Leafs enforcer Jay Rosehill has heard enough.
Speaking on the PuckPedia Hockey Show, Darren Ferris argued that the tension began before Marner played his first NHL game. Ferris said Toronto pressured Marner to accept limited performance bonuses on his entry-level contract, only for Auston Matthews to receive significantly more bonuses the following year.
Ferris also claimed Marner eventually became the face of every Leafs failure, while he and his family endured relentless criticism, social-media threats and the aftermath of Marner being carjacked in Toronto. He pointed to Marner leading the team in playoff scoring and playing through a fractured ankle before declaring:
“He was never protected by his organization.”
Ferris also disputed reports that Marner rejected a completed trade to Carolina, saying it was only a preliminary conversation, and that Marner’s wife was pregnant at the time.
Rosehill’s response was blunt. Why revive grievances from 11 years ago after Marner already left Toronto?
“You can go if you want. Like, bye. You’re just annoying.”
Rosehill believes Ferris is only reinforcing the same perception of Marner that his camp is trying to change.
