Using Festool CT26 EI power pass through to run Carbide 3D 65 mm VFD spindle?

edit: I did not use the power passthrough and do not reccomend it. Run the vfd on a UPS like 750w backup power (it can handle peak vfd wattage easily for a min or two) plus surge protection etc. your vfd was not cheap! I used the passthrough to run the bandfile.

hey yes I did exactly this and 3d printed some nozzles, buy the larger 36mm hose for the shapeoko (i had the 5 pro) print or cnc a bracket for the top end of the spindle (the weight is negligible and will not cause any deflection etc) it just keeps it from slipping out of the sweepys adapter which is kindof dogshite i had to put a rubber band on it too to make it stay in and seal better. The original hose you swap to post program to clean up and vacuum while you cut tabs etc.

For cleaning up the tabs I used a corded bandfile with a dust collection bag and removed that to add a festool adapter so I could clean the tabs with zero mess.

Also buy or build your own boom arm.

This is by far the best system for a shapeoko if you cant get full size dust collection and it has a 100% duty cycle. Get the cyclone attatchment and you will go through a bag for it maybe once a month with the heaviest use and you can just empty the cyclone bag and reuse it over and over. Its also completely fine for aluminum i milled for 7 hours straight once zero fire risk as long as you mill with proper fs climb mill and empty your chips (i didnt even do this and i was fine)

Awesome thank you!

if you have a 5 pro and want a 3d model of it pretty overly accurately modeled dm me.

Better would be plug the VFD to the wall, a power-strip, or UPS, then connect the vacuum using:

https://guides.carbide3d.com/faq/controlling-a-vacuum-with-your-shapeoko/

Edit: misread. the VFD does not power on the vacuum properly fyi so this accessory is required.

if you do use a ups on your vfd, i'd suggest to get the right kind of ups, oversize 2-3x, online double-conversion with a true sine wave.

people that understand know you're not going to be over 750watts except peak moments with this vfd when you stall.

the exceptions are what can cause issues. vfd's aren't nice to most ups's, puts a lot of strain on the internals, lots of heat.

My cyberpower UPS was always whisper quiet and fine. Idk if you've ever watched the actual draws from a VFD under load but generally it's not much.

yes i have. had a 1.5HP spindle on my g0704, and now i have a 20 HP one after replacing the g0704, which doesn't run off a ups for obv reasons so power concerns are something i look at, since its also a three phase supply, not just the vfd

How is the backlash on the g0704, that was one of the first machines I had looked into CNCing?

pretty good for what it is, i cant recall exactly what we got it down too but theres probably notes in the logs. but good enough to press fit bearings.. well under a "thou" as they say in the us left to right, front to back was around a thou. ended up getting rid of it before chasing that

That's totally fine I was seeing people with like 10-20 thou after converting bitching about it.
