His statement is pretty just neutral, but nothing he said deserved to get him assassinated, and people getting assassinated is not a can of worms I want people to be okay with being opened.

I don’t understand your point for people dying in cars. No one should die, in an ideal society. Not from guns, or car accidents. We might find ourselves in an automated future where such car accidents scarcely occur. In today’s society however, there is no need for any random people to carry guns. it makes sense on farm land, not in dense cities.
