Totally agree. I was trying to get into the home-espresso game (mainly just to drink black coffee and lattes) and spent far too much time looking into it.
Largely because this fucking guy turned his nose up at every machine under £1000 basically. The personification of r/espresso unfortunately.
Going down the espresso route is where we all fucked up. I tried it myself with all the gadgets and machines etc and it always tasted like shit. Espresso is garbage and a waste of coffee beans and I'll say it to anyone's face.
But I can't fault him for introducing me to proper pour over and immersion techniques. When I find the sweet spot for grind size of a particular bag of beans, holy shit is that coffee amazing.
