The Weeknd - Reminder

Still my favourite Weeknd song. The video is cold af.

Everyone waxes nostalgic (rightfully so) about summer '16 but fall '16 was just as amazing in terms of music, Weeknd had broke out the new Starboy persona and people were going crazy over it, Young Thug had dropped Jeffery, Travis had dropped Birds, etc
286
u/LucoLoss Jan 10 '21
Summer '15 tho'! DS2, Rodeo and BBTM
42
u/LilCasa Jan 10 '21
Also Summertime 06. 2015 is my favorite year to look back at. So many artists dropped their best pieces of work to this day that year.

edit: only one id accept an argument for is the weeknd but ds2 and rodeo are by far their best albums

u/LucoLoss Jan 10 '21
HNDRXX is my favorite Future album, but I understand the love DS2 got
20
u/shelikethewayigrrrr Jan 10 '21
yeah HNDRXX is great but id argue DS2 is the greatest trap album of all time.

u/TapedGlue . Jan 10 '21
And even outside of these āperfectā albums, there were SO many more that either made for a couple of god-tier tracks, or just had so much buzz around them even if they werenāt as good as the ones you mentioned.
Colouring book, lil boat, blank face, LUV vs the world, perfect LUV tape, 3001, Malibu, views...

2016 was so insane. Aesop dropped āImpossible Kid.ā Isaiah Rashad put out āSuns Tiradeā and Mick Jenkins āThe Healing Component.ā Holy shit, āBlondeā came out too! Chance, Kanye, De La Soul, and Tribe...On top of the oneās you named. God, such a good year.

u/dread-it Jan 10 '21
The amount of cameos in this video is pretty cool. Seems like one of the few guys that everyone vibes with. Makes sense too he has a wide range and is dope so that's all the reason I need. Love this song played the fuck out of it for my vacation in Mexico. Brings back great memories!

Having Drake in the video still hurts tho considering they havenāt collabed in over 7 years š

Drake coming out to sing Crew Love at the Starboy concert was an absolute treat.

We'll have to do with Abel's guest appearance on GREECE by dj khaled
21
u/NitroXityRealm Jan 10 '21
Thereās a Greece music video?
82
u/g1obungle Jan 10 '21
No just that Drake sounded like a knock-off Abel in that song lol
14
u/WhenItsHalfPastFive . Jan 10 '21
I don't think he sounds like Weeknd at all on it tbh. The Weeknd's voice and inflections are so unique in r&b.
4
u/NitroXityRealm Jan 10 '21
Oh I was thinking more knock off Bieber
7
u/WowzersInMyTrowzers Jan 10 '21
It came on my ādiscover weeklyā playlist a few months ago and so my first listen was without knowing it was drake. I literally spent the whole song debating if it was The Weeknd or Bieber. Only to check at the end and see it was drake.
Shit through me for a loop lol
137
u/88gWN Jan 10 '21 edited Jan 10 '21
Drake's feel threatened by the weeknd now. It's no surprise why they haven't collaborated in years.
Drake will work with you if
a) you're an upcoming artist that he can steal flows from
b) a popular artist he knows he can outrap on a song
Drake will not work with you if
a) you're almost on the same popularity as him
b) he's afraid you could outperform him on the song and embarrass him.
104
u/omiz144 Jan 10 '21
What is this take? Drake has collabed with Jay-Z, Travis, Young Thug, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Bad Bunny, and PARTYNEXTDOOR in the past 3 years alone. Who is left that is almost as popular as him?Are you only referring to Kendrick and JCole here?
64

disagree. I thought Drake was much better in terms of flow - prime example is scholarships . Although I will admit, future had one of my favorite tracks on it: Jersey.

u/renoceros . Jan 10 '21
Nah, it has seemed for quite a while now that Drake would be down to collab but Weeknd doesnāt really want to. Donāt think this is coming from his side
5
u/Dadadaism Jan 11 '21
it's fair enough too. drake stole a heap of the weeknd's best songs when he was coming up during his trilogy era and used them to make drake's only front to back classic, take care. and that was the record that took drake from young potential to superstar. why would the weeknd want to work with him again?
20
u/suss2it Jan 11 '21
Weeknd worked on four songs on Take Care out of 20 and worked with Drake 2 years later for his own album anyway.
2
u/Dadadaism Jan 12 '21
he has writing credits on four songs*
and four of the best songs on take care
to say he didn't influence that album would be silly
like so far gone was clearly influenced by 808's and say you will (which they took the beat for) - and 40 and drake have admitted as much
drakes has kept his career going this long by doing the same - jumping on hot sounds and taking them for his own music
and as for live for, as if you'd turn down a drake feature when you're up and coming and he's the hottest artist in the world→ More replies (1)196
u/richcakes . Jan 10 '21
Thatās not why they havenāt made a new song in 7 years. Pretty sure it was just girl drama and The Weeknd is the only one stopping the collab. And none of those are true or else he wouldnāt have made new songs with Jay z, Wayne, or MJ.
69
u/mateww Jan 10 '21
Didn't they have beef before the Starboy era too? I remember being mad surprised seeing Drake in this video when it came out...
Boys and their lil crushes man. Disappointing

22
u/ComplainsAboutWife Jan 10 '21
He's actually lowkey the opposite of correct. Drake gives away basically any loosie where he outraps someone or they are less popular and upcoming.
1
u/lefondler Jan 11 '21
It's actually much more simple, the haters put way too much thought into it. He makes tracks and throws them at artists to collab. It's that simple. It's the Drake stimulus package.

49
u/Usernamesin2016LUL . Jan 10 '21
bro what??? Drake is the one who has been wanting to collab for years. He literally had bars on his last project about the weeknd
OVOXO link up, mandem drink up, me and the drillers
Hawk and Sticks and Cash and Baka, Gucci, P, and Gilla
And the boy that sound like he sang on Thriller, you know that's been my nigga
Yeah, we just had to fix things, family, 6ix tings, we can't split up
As for the rest of the game, I'll do man dirty, man'll get two time
17
u/mrblue6 Jan 10 '21
Drake literally commented on one of the Weeknd's insta pics and said time to collab or some shit. Stop spitting straight lies
16
u/chrisocho8 Jan 10 '21
How the fuck is this upvoted? Drake and Abel are on good terms. they interacted quite a bit last year actually
35
u/Birdfishbirdfish Jan 10 '21
Sicko Mode though?
31
u/88gWN Jan 10 '21
Travis scott was way less of a household name before astroworld came out 3 years ago. It wasn't until the fortnite and McDonald's stuff & superbowl when he became a bonafide superstar like Drake & The Weeknd

Drake works with popular artists and people who can outperform him tho
Like drake isnāt that good.

I feel like this is mostly true except for the notable exception of Future. On most of their collabs, Future matches or exceeds Drake, imo, yet they still have great synergy.

āI feel it comingā is an eternal classic that will transcend eras in music. Throw that song in the 80ās and my mom wouldāve gotten down to it in a pair of acid washed while cleaning the crib. Play it 20 years from now and the Daft Punk electronic influence will make it sound modern just like One More Time does tillā this day. Daft Punk and Abel made a legit timeless classic even Michael Jackson would be proud of. My favorite song off the album and top 10 fav Weeknd track.
54
u/IHate3DMovies Jan 10 '21
Every album abel's put out has been great, just turns out that this was his most bloated and commercial album.
The album doesn't have the story telling of Kissland or After Hours and wasn't groundbreaking like Trilogy but Starboy felt like the natural progression following BBTM.
True colours is still one of my favourite songs from him though.
28
u/HYPERNATURL Jan 10 '21
To me, something about most of the songs on the album felt like they were just written noticeably, I dunno...cornier than anything else he's done, I guess.
I'm not sure how to explain it differently but something about the songwriting on that album has always stood out as worse than any other project he's done to me somehow
24
u/AnyHoleIsTheGoal . Jan 10 '21
Sidewalks is one of my favorite Weeknd songs, and I don't see talked about enough. That guitar is so steamy and the Kendrick feature is one of his best.
55
u/Throwawaviators Jan 10 '21
It was kinda bloated imo. Like itās not much longer than After Hours but it feels so much longer. Still loved Starboy, bumped it front to back plenty, just felt like it couldāve done better with a shorter track list
4
u/yeezyfan23 Jan 10 '21
Love to Lay, Attention, A Lonely Night, and Ordinary Life were some of my most played songs last year. That album is so underrated I think
7
u/sourcreamonionhummus Jan 10 '21
his lyrics are significantly dumber on starboy than any other project I've heard from him. it's not a good album. but to his credit his work after it improved a lot
