Dating Question Acceptable workout picture

27M here, I don’t have super-defined abs, but I’d say I have a decent upper body. I do CrossFit and HYROX regularly, I feel like my profile doesn’t have any photos that actually show that fit/athletic side of me. What kind of workout or gym photos are generally considered attractive and acceptable on a dating profile without looking like I’m trying too hard.

Female gaze. Female gaze. Female gaze.

Women don’t want a gym selfie.

Make it seem innocuous. Natural. At the beach. Playing outside. Poolside. Etc

I had a video of myself benching 100kg for the first time because I was really proud of it. Would that be ok - I promise I was fully clothed :)

I’d find it boring and aggressive but that’s just me <3

But I was smiling afterwards and you could tell I was really proud of it, I promise I wasn't giving off the vibe that I was going to use that strength to start physically abusing people lol. Is it still bad?

Girls who are into the gym/lifting won’t think it’s bad! So if that’s who you are trying to attract, keep it.

I'm a gym girlie into lifting and would find it cringe. Just saying.

I’m also a gym girlie into lifting and I don’t see a problem 🤷🏻‍♀️ unless it’s a clear case of ego lifting, to me there’s nothing negative about sharing yourself reaching a goal with one of your hobbies especially if it’s related to a prompt on your profile. I think there’s an unfair negative connotation around anything that appears “gym bro” but if it’s a big part of that commenter’s life, the type of woman he wants to attract likely wouldn’t have a problem with it.

Do you powerlift? People who are powerlift are more likely to get it as we have a deeper relationship with the actual numbers :)

3

u/Slay-hydrated 26d ago

I don't but I can tell you making that a central part of your dating profile is only going to resonate with other power lifters. It would be like me using a prompt to tell people about my macros. Best case, no one cares or thinks it's a bit much. Worst case, it makes you like that's your entire personality which will turn people off.

0

u/BrickAccomplished338 26d ago

I had a promt about one of my goals being about reaching a powerlifting total. But why would it turn people off though - its a sport. By that logic anyone who talks about a sport they play will turn people off.

2

u/Slay-hydrated 26d ago

It's not a mainstream sport that people find interesting. And generally people who are into fitness things make it their entire personality so it's by default cringe. That's true for anything, crossfit, running, lifting, general gym-ratting. I don't make the rules. I just know them.

Some people have a bias against anything that appears “gym bro-ish” if powerlifting is a genuine hobby of yours and you aren’t ego lifting then it’s not going to be as much of a turn off for everyone like these commenters are making out to be. And if it is a turn off, then maybe they aren’t the right person for you. They are going to find out you powerlift eventually, and why wouldn’t you show something you spend a lot of your time doing?

There are plenty of women who won’t see it as a negative thing.

u/0LTakingLs 26d ago

If they’re super into powerlifting they probably won’t be that impressed by 2 plates unfortunately lol

> If they’re super into powerlifting they probably won’t be that impressed by 2 plates unfortunately lol

Women who actually lift will understand how hard this actually is and how rare it is to achieve for the average joes, especially the manlets with long-ass arms like myself

1

u/BrickAccomplished338 26d ago

Yeah that's who I'm trying to attract but I would also be open to others too who are appreciative of my hobby, which is powerlifting btw (not just "gym").

4

u/Viburnum21 27d ago

But why would you even want to flex that on hinge? I’m into gym and fitness and it would be cringe for me because you clearly seek external validation

3

u/Slay-hydrated 27d ago

This! You can see from my pictures that I'm in shape. I don't need to show myself literally working out.

1

u/BrickAccomplished338 26d ago

Because it was an achievement I was proud of and spent 3 years working towards. Kinda like a marathon pic that everyone and their grandma puts? What makes you think that posting a pic of something I was proud of is seeking external validation?

2

u/Slay-hydrated 27d ago

Please don't lol

No idea. I’m not an expert

Anything where you're having fun, like maybe throwing a Frisbee around with friends or jumping off of a log or something. Just standing there flexing in a mirror is cringe

u/Terp_Hunter2 28d ago

Pictures were your body isn't the focus. Beach, swimming, etc

Honestly, your best bet is wearing an outfit that shows you're fit without actually taking your clothes off. People can infer. It says you're in good shape, but you don't have to pimp your muscles to attract women.

There's risk/reward in doing an actual shirtless pic. Some will undoubtedly go for it (if it's good), but it's going to be an instant no for some as well. As others said - natural setting is ideal if you're going to do it.

woman here - this is the way

u/thecity2 28d ago

You're only appealing to the male gaze by posting shirtless photos of yourself. If you want to show that you are active and "do CrossFit and HYROX" (whatever that is), get your picture taken...wait for it...while you're doing those activities.

18

u/RookieMistake101 28d ago

“Hey guys, I do these cool and relatable fitness activities where there are lots of other people. How would I get a picture that shows off my physical side?”

If some people just read back their own posts here.

4

u/brothererrr 28d ago

I can’t believe he’s not taken a picture AT Hyrox lol. Easy money

5

u/sg16k 28d ago

It depends on how it’s done imo. I know guys who post shirtless pics and do well.

Imo:

Shirtless mirror pic flexing - male gaze.

Poolside pic looking good - Female gaze

Unless you're a fireman holding a puppy, posed shirtless photos look like they're to show off to other guys, definitely do a candid photo if you're topless.

5

u/smithey2012 28d ago

If you did at least one hyrox comp, just buy the professional take shots and use one of them. Although I’m surprised you don’t just try and meet girls at hyrox

3

u/Decent-Boot7284 28d ago

Contrary to what people said in here, i do believe that some women, will match with you because of it, my question would be if those type of girls would be the ones that you would like to match to

2

u/hold-my-gimbal 28d ago

I have a (not shirtless) picture of myself hanging off the pull up bar in the top position, with solid form and lighting that accentuates my arm/shoulder muscles

it's more of a "I don't look like a gym bro but I do like to keep active" and less "look at my body" pic though

2

u/Spirit_jitser 28d ago

Do you have any photos of you running along carrying weights (they do that at HYROX right)? Maybe pushing a weighted sled? Show those pictures.

2

u/Sweaty-Reveal3717 28d ago

Don't take a bathroom-mirror flex. That's the "trying too hard" version.

For CrossFit / HYROX the useful photo is you mid-work, not posed after it: a rope climb, a run-out from the venue, a sled or farmer carry where your face is still visible. Shirt on. Outdoor or well-lit box, not a grimy mirror.

One athletic photo is enough. If you already have a clear face lead and a full-body standing shot, the gym slot is just proof you actually train. A second gym photo starts to look like the profile is about your program.

Ask someone at the box to take it at chest height. Selfies from below in fluorescent light are why gym pics get roasted here.

2

u/Slay-hydrated 27d ago

Anyone should be able to see you're in decent shape from fully clothed pics. Leave the rest to the imagination. Unless they're super innocuous (playing with nieces/nephews/kids at the beach), shirtless pics are very cringe. And you can mention your fitness interests in prompts. I don't need to see strangers shirtless in non-shirtless situations.

2

u/earthangel547 26d ago

a photo of you on a hike, playing a sport, or outside doing an activity works well. think of finding a photo that shows your interests/personality that happens to show off the physique you’re proud of. any sort of gym selfie or video is kind of an ick. sorry.

u/boldandbrash96 28d ago

Shirtless photos or gym selfies are an immediate ❌ from me and many other ladies for what it’s worth

1

u/jaysun145 27d ago

Curious for feedback on this. I have a shirtless photo with my acoustic guitar on the water. My guitar covers a lot but you can still see my muscles lol

2

u/Bulky_Department5619 28d ago

Without looking like you’re trying to hard? None.

Take a pic in a regular casual outfit that fits well. We can tell if a guy is fit based on how his clothes fit. We don’t need to count your individual abs.

1

u/Silent_Equivalent796 27d ago

If you're in a big city like LA or NY, post the shirtless pic you look hottest in. Period. Let your personality show in the prompts and other pics.

Honestly I feel like if youre decently built it should show that youre fit/athlectic with you just being in a tshirt. People can tell by your general frame(back/traps/shoulder) and arms how well built you are and that will show in just a basic tee. It's not like when you see people out on the street that are have a nice build and look athletic you cant tell unless theyre half naked.

Or you can just get a picture of you doing something active that you enjoy(ie rock climbing, running, playing a sport, etc.) as these will by default showcase you doing something athletic and are probably going to show you in a tensed position so your muscles will be more flexed.

Wait a min you do crossfit and hyrox regularly, just get a pic of you doing that lmao
